Holy shit, a chance at getting a point! I'm still not sure about this one but it can't hurt to try, so here I go.
The SS soldier, even when infighting, always points towards the player regardless of the actual direction he's firing in. The sprites for him firing in different directions don't exist due to the lack of infighting in Wolf3D. The second one, is the size difference, the SS is the biggest non-boss character in the Wolf3D but in Doom he appears the same size as the human enemies.
Btw I would have answered the question about the repetition in the text screen music but I listened to it to verify it after someone guessed six so it would have been kinda cheaty.

Q44a. The sprites for the SS Soldier in Doom were lifted directly from Wolfenstein 3D. This leads to at least two graphical discrepancies - one of which is major, the other minor. Can you explain? For the minor issue, I think you're referring to the fact that there's a stray magenta pixel in one of the SS aiming/firing sprites, between the legs somewhere I think. This is because Wolfenstein 3D used magenta as the transparent color and the replacement of that pixel with Doom's transparent color was presumably missed during the conversion process. The "major issue" I am assuming is the fact that rotational sprites for the aiming and firing of the SS don't exist so it always appears to face the player regardless of the actual aiming direction. There was no infighting in Wolfenstein 3D thus aiming and firing animations are always directly at the player (because the player is the only thing the enemies in Wolfenstein 3D could aim at).

good-old You got the point! The major and obvious one is indeed the lack of rotations for the firing frames. For the minor, I was going to accept your answer as well as JadingTsunami , but you got there first. Q45. How many official Doom v1.9 versions exist, and where can you find each one? Ultimate Doom - this version is most likely what you got when you bought "Doom" in one of the post-release boxes Final Doom - similar to above; what you get when you bought the "Final Doom" box Final Doom, id Anthology version - This had a few bug fixes and came in a special presentation box. I think not all versions of the box had the updated 1.9 with fixes, but I don't recall any way to differentiate the two.

JadingTsunami Well, yeah, but aren't you forgetting something? You may amend your answer.

3 is not the answer. Ah, sure. Took my best guess. Up to others now! btw, enjoying this game, this was a great idea.

No rotation sprites when firing, because Wolfenstein doesn't have infighting (or co-op I suppose) - this is probably the major one.
I can't think of a minor discrepancy but I'll guess it's related to the differing colour palettes.
Edit omg I opened the wrong page please disregard

JadingTsunami Well, yeah, but aren't you forgetting something? You may amend your answer. Registered (3-episode) Doom? And Doom II. By now, not everyone remembers that Doom II was released before Ultimate Doom. Doom/Doom2 v1.9 - 709,905 bytes Ultimate Doom v1.9 - 715,493 bytes Final Doom v1.9 - 722,629 bytes Final Doom v1.9 from id Anthology / GOG - 722,629 bytes but different content. This is probably the 'definitive' version, since it fixes a few annoying bugs (teleporter Z coordinate introduced in Final Doom, Sky never changing, crashing if DEMO4 is not present). Anyhow... I'm going to replace the question. No fair to give it to someone after JadingTsunami had so much correct details. Q45a. Which is the only Doom II level made by John Romero that has Mancubi in it?

Yes, the answer was more correct than the question. I forgot about MAP29 myself. 🤦♂️

Anyhow... I'm going to replace the question. No fair to give it to someone after JadingTsunami had so much correct details. (I promise not to derail; just posting for general interest) In fact the correct answer appears to be 7... 6 listed here plus Anthology/GOG version.

(I promise not to derail; just posting for general interest) In fact the correct answer appears to be 7... 6 listed here plus Anthology/GOG version. I should have probably specified in the question that I meant specifically the engine / executable. As you can see from the EXE MD5s listed on that page - the Shareware/Registered/Doom2 1.9 EXE is the same, as is the TNT/Plutonia 1.9 EXE. The IWADs are different of course. Fun thing - when running any of the Final Doom IWADs, the title bar while loading will show " Doom 2: The Plutonia Experiment v1.9" (or Doom 2: TNT Evilution) and the W_Init text will say "commercial version", just like Doom II. It ticked a stupid pet peeve when I was a kid, so I used DeHackEd to change the strings inside the EXE (and did something similar for Ultimate Doom), so it looks like this when I run it (note the v1.9u, v1.9f and 'ultimate' / 'final' version). Attachment Deleted Attachment DeletedOf course, things look stupid if one uses those modified EXE files to run the other IWADs, but one is not supposed to do it anyways, since things can break in funny ways.

plutonia map05 ghost town That's correct! Looks like you are pulling ahead. Scoreboard SilverMiner - 12 points Nockson - 9 points Xeep-Eep - 8 points switchblade - 5 points matador - 4 points rancidsam - 2 points JadingTsunami - 2 points lunchlunch - 1 point thundercunt - 1 point noisomedead - 1 point good-old - 1 point
This one if for the techies: Q47. List and explain briefly the roles of the five lumps associated with each DOOM map, which are created by the node builder (as opposed to being manipulated directly in the level editor).

NODES - The level is split in half by certain lines, and based on that, the engine can calculate what it needs to render when you're at a certain place. Or something like that. I don't know what nodes are actually for. Lol SEGS - like linedefs but split at convenient places (for the purpose of building nodes) SSECTORS - similar but for sectors BLOCKMAP - I believe this is something to do with collision detection. REJECT - a table that shows whether there's a line of sight between any two sectors, used for monsters. This one is particularly interesting because it can be manipulated to influence monster behaviour.

OK, that's a start. SEGS and SSECTORS are indeed break-ups of linedefs and sectors, respectively. Can you explain the basic principle according to which the split is computed? I.e., what is the purpose of splitting them up in the first place? Question is still open for anyone.

I really can't. I imagine that for example concave sectors will get split into convex subsectors, but I don't know of some overall rule.

Those lumps are called lymph nodes. They are created and used by the node builder (which does many things) to lymph the map together so it runs good.

xeepeep I think it's close enough for this stage of the game. Essentially, you are right - the basic principle is that sectors are divided in a way that makes them convex, and the segs are created to match. How exactly every node builder does it - is too deep even for me, and is beyond the scope of the question. Scoreboard SilverMiner - 12 points Nockson - 9 points Xeep-Eep - 9 points switchblade - 5 points matador - 4 points rancidsam - 2 points JadingTsunami - 2 points lunchlunch - 1 point thundercunt - 1 point noisomedead - 1 point good-old - 1 point
And hopefully a nice one to finish with. Someone who has been with us all along throughout the season should be able to pick this one up. Q48. Which Doom episode replacement PWAD from the 90s starts with a demo of a secret level that involves infighting between a Cyberdemon and a bunch of Barons?

Nope, not that one. Feel free to guess again. Notice the hint above the question.
This session is now over, I won't be asking any new questions at this point, but the last question is still open until someone picks it up.
