Used to be all the "advanced" source ports like EDGE and Legacy and ZDoom/GZDoom.
I maintain GZDoom is a good source port/engine buuuuuut would be a lot better in the hands of management that was more...Stable.
Now for vanilla I use DooM Retro and Crispy DooM. Also, I just found out EDGE has a "modern" classic update, to which I say YIPPY SKIPPY!

My own, but of course I am biased, since I originally built it from PrBoom-Plus to meet my own Doom-playing proclivities. For MBF21/etc., I use GZDoom.

When I have my prboom-plus fork, it'll be my favourite too.
Yet I haven't tried building zdoom 2.8.1 and Doom3D

Doom Legacy 1.12, for the underwater effect in MAP30.
Seriously, I prefer to stay close to vanilla, but with limits removed, and better graphics. So it's PrBoom+ for me on Windows, MBF on DOS.

Legacy is a good one 1.40 src helped me to fix savegame crash in tartar (eternity 3.29-joel5) when manipulating mobjs with fragglescript.

I use prboom+ 2.5.1.5 for everything that it supports.
Currently using an older version of dsda-doom for mbf21.
Will use gzdoom if I have to.

Either Zandronum, or Crispy Doom. GZDoom at times, and I'll try getting to into Eternity if I manage to have the time for it.

it's unfortunate but i'm one of those dsda cucks. i'll use chocolate where i can, so i guess my actual favorite source port is having zero improvements over vanilla other than savegame buffer limits raised

advice to all mappers, please stop making limit removing stuff and give me an excuse to play it 320x200@35fps with the shitty opl midis and the occasional visplane overflow. i'm definitely not in the spectrum

320x200 looked fine on contemporary CRTs. Now I find it difficult to adjust to.

Unless the wad specifically requires GZDoom (and I rarely play stuff that does, the GZ plastic sheen really gets to me) I just throw everything in DSDA, even Heretic.

I like GZdoom even if the creator probably hates me.
But I'd like to one day just move on to making proprietary games with a different engine like Unity.
I already do well for myself professionally, I don't need to do that. So I really don't mind just keeping 2.5D game creation as one of my many hobbies for now. Besides, I wouldn't be able to make cool movie adaptations outside of Doom-mods.
But once that day comes, I think I'll move on from GZdoom, and Doom as a means in general.
Maybe I would just stick with it if there wasn't that element, but I have to admit, it is kind of awkward.
Than again, Sgt. Mark made the most famous GZdoom mod (most famous Doom mod period), and he was banned from zdoom.
At any rate, I would still hang around the Doom community.

Frankly, I'm not sure if I like games as much as I like the feeling of playing God. I feel like I get a micro-dose of that with game creation.

I alternate between ZDoom(not GZDoom)(if I'm playing some gameplay mods that k8vavoom can't run or want the software renderer) and k8vavoom(if none of those two).

I actually already started poking around with Unity, with the intention of creating a 2.5D FPS. I want to emulate what GZDoom can do, but add even more to it if possible.

Cool, that's gonna be pretty popular in the community when it's released, if it can support GZDoom mods. Personal rant: I don't think I'll ever understand why people treat Unity like the default option for this stuff, what it does it have that no other engines have? Popularity? A colossal asset store so you have to put minimal effort into your game? I feel no sympathy for the people affected by Unity's recent decision about advertisements or whatever it was, they signed up for the engine knowing the risks. Although if you're reading this Kontra, I'm not directing it at you, you'll probably make a better game than 95% of other people who use the engine. How is your post related to mine though, lol

if I had to make a 2.5D, I'd be doing it on prboom+ fork (and/or glboom+) in the laziest case I think

tbh, using idTech1-derived engine for a completely new game is not the best idea. it is much better to write something from scratch, avoiding idTech1 rendering quircks, and totally broken physics/coldet. especially coldet, i'd say.

Someone should make a Doom game in 3D Construction Kit.

If I make it in Unity, it would be a fully-3D game that uses 2.5 D graphics as assets. It wouldn't be made with vectors.

Naturally, I would like to make something very gory, dark, and hilarious. Sort of like a Tromaville movie.
