DoomRetro used to be my favorite because the visuals look incredible and I enjoyed the comestic improvements like deep water and brightmaps. I stopped using it in favor of DSDA-Doom because of the many Dehacked bugs I was finding. And if your project uses a custom palette you will run into plenty of annoying graphical glitches.

Zandronum, and Chocolate Doom.
I wanna say GZDoom, but I have a love-hate relationship with it, mostly because of the default configuration. I know you can change it, but it's still annoying as hell. Especially the texture filtering...
Edit: You know what, I take it back; GZDoom is dog-shit.

Anything that isn't GZDoom.

I like GZdoom even if the creator probably hates me. But I'd like to one day just move on to making proprietary games with a different engine like Unity. I already do well for myself professionally, I don't need to do that. So I really don't mind just keeping 2.5D game creation as one of my many hobbies for now. Besides, I wouldn't be able to make cool movie adaptations outside of Doom-mods. But once that day comes, I think I'll move on from GZdoom, and Doom as a means in general. Maybe I would just stick with it if there wasn't that element, but I have to admit, it is kind of awkward. Than again, Sgt. Mark made the most famous GZdoom mod (most famous Doom mod period), and he was banned from zdoom. At any rate, I would still hang around the Doom community. I know this is an old thread, sorry for bumping it and I don't want to restart a war, but what's the story on the creator of gzdoom?

In general or his history with Kontra? Maybe a little of both... He's the primary developer of the most popular Doom port, so naturally this means not everyone can get what they want. Many times this leads to conflicts which he has to resolve. Not everyone ends up satisfied. I have always found him to be reasonable. There isn't much else to say, I think.

Is any of the history political? I got a pretty strong sense of politics being important at the doomworld website. I didn't even know who made the port until now, reading this thread seeing if there were other ports I might be interested in.

The only infamous event I know about is a mod that was purpose-built to exploit ZDoom bugs which upset him ( lilith.pk3). But I found that the stories about that event are mostly overstated also.

Well, I've developed what would become one of the most popular mods for GZDOOM, as well as the base content for an even more popular mod, but he seems to have a dislike for me based on past interactions. Most likely because of my posts regarding political and social topics for the most part. However I don't really give a shit, because I have a right to be who I am, and if people don't like it, they can kiss my ass.
When I create mods and content, I do it for me.
If I'm an artist that is hated by the company I buy my paint, and canvas from, it shouldn't deter my passion for painting.

Sergeant Mark IV was banned from zdoom, and they dislike him. Honestly 90% of people would not give a shit or even heard of gzdoom without him. So I am not surprised or troubled by being disliked. So it's all good.

I'm new to Doom, so I'm still trying to figure out who's who. But the feeling I got from the doomworld forums was pretty bad so it seems like this place is a little more my style.

Yeah, it is certainly more laid back here. Which is a statement of fact really. I think only one person was actually permanently banned in the 9 years of existence of this board. Of which probably has a different account now, and nobody really give a shit anyway. Our community is mature enough to expect that some people are disagreeable and it really doesn't matter.

I think the fact that people can delete their own accounts helps with this. They get mad, nuke their own accounts out of rage, and just come back anyways most of the time. I've done it.

Sorry, it's hard to tell in my web browser (Links 2.12 running on Linux framebuffer tty). I can't even login to doomworld anymore ever since they changed the software years ago. But anyway you don't need thousands of ports, there's quite a bit of choices already, and that's what's important. I usually try to stick with plain old vanilla maps that can run in any port, or even in doom.exe itself. If I really wanted to make very elaborate 3D construction maps, I wouldn't use Doom engine in the first place. Quake or something else would be more appropriate, and require much less hardware resources (it ran fine for me in software rendering when I had a low-end pentium).

Are there any comparable to what gzdoom can do in terms of customization, slopes, etc?

Lol I was looking up the others, and I'm pretty disliked by those developers too. Oh well...
I should stick to the idea of creating my own 2.5D FPS engine and say fuck everyone else.

Quake runs at well over 1k fps with ironwail on my ancient pc so I agree it's a great engine for 3d. From what I've seen of the modern tools it looks fairly easy to map for and I didn't even have much trouble back in the early days as a dumb kid with worldcraft. I'd say the only real leg up gzdoom has on it is how easy it is to mod all the elements like weapons and enemies and the fact that you're working with sprites. Just having some very primate level knowledge of a few javascript and C derived languages I was able to pick up on enough to easily do some fairly elaborate stuff back in the day. It would be cool to see the best of both worlds where Quake had that level of modability along with sprite support.
