lmao at the idea that demanding someone alter their viewpoint to better reflect your own is equivalent to harsh criticism intended to improve somebody's art skills

Scuba is saying that he wishes people made actual community projects instead of DBPs, which are supposed to be a "mapping gym" as 40oz put it once. I don't see why is everyone mad about it, that's a very reasonable position and I even agree to an extent.

- Find 3 random tea cups scattered across all maps and place on a table
- You need to find 6 moons hidden all over
- This suit of armor needs a new helmet... but not that one over ther that is also missing a head
- The bowling alley does something but god only know what
The game becomes simply far too cryptic for the average player and it stopped being fun for me when I only had 2 teacups and god-only-knows where the other one is. The game desperately needs to mark these locations on the map with a little icon or give you a checklist that says what area it can be found... but as-is, I couldn't recommend it to someone as anything other than an interesting idea that needs improvement. You're ciricle the wagons to defend the project's faults because you agree with the author's political opinons. And, honestly, I don't even want to talk about politics when discussing Doom, but I have no choice; the moment impie said "yes, this wad is making a political statement" that's it, politics becomes part of the discussion. You can't have it both ways... you can't add political commentary and get mad that people had critical, political opinions of your work... while simultaneously saying "ugh, just enjoy the experience." If I go ahead and write about Dynamite Dutchess in the Cacowards, I have to talk about politics because the project is a politcal statement... I'd rather just write about Doom.

People can do actual community projects in Doom Projects subforum. They just don't do it for some reason. And I don't see a point in replacing DBPs with regular community projects. The beauty of DBP is that if certain month sucks for you, the next month will be another theme anyway.

scubasteve, The funny thing in this discussion is I believe you see the faults in the project only because you dislike its political message, while you believe I deny the faults in the project because I like its political message. No, I just genuinely enjoyed the quest, I played it in June as I prepared for an ultramarathon race, and finished it just the day before the race day. And during the last week before the race day I needed to relax and only exercise as much as to keep muscles in shape. I surely wouldn't have kept playing game if it was frustrating. The reason I may have avoided frustration is simple: I read the description of difficulties attentively and thus choosed the easiest one, which means combat was just a cherry on top, while figuring out puzzles the main treat. And solving a puzzle that you had been thinking for some time already about how to solve is really rewarding (except the place those cups on table crap, that specific one did suck). Maybe this reward mechanism doesn't work for you for some reason? Also you don't specifically look for the moons or solve quests in order - this is non-linear, remember - in reality for the most time you are just exploring the world, picking up any objects you come across, and trying to insert them into anything you come across. I had to actually look only for 2 planets out of 6, because I have a phobia of being underwater (and yeah, the switch was exactly in that cursed water place you fall into from the gardens). The bowling needs to be played until it breaks, basically if you have the exploration mindset you naturally do it (I did it on the first try, because I wanted to fucking score a strike). Now there are mods that are frustrating - how do I have weapons in Total Chaos, for example? That piece of liquid shit won a cacoward! The first and only weapon I found broke: - when I was playing the first time, in the middle of first combat - when I was playing the secodn time, immediately after I killed the first monster. I couldn't find any more weapons, but I could and did find enemies while unarmed. Now tell me, by what fucking reason did Total Chaos win, if I am unable to find weapons to survive in early game already? And how that is any better from the issues you had in Dynamite Duchess, especially considering that in Dynamite Duchess you weren't on timer to find items (and often just found them by accident), but in Total Chaos you effectively fucking were needing items just to survive and couldn't be finding them. Even if you had genuinely been frustrated playing Dynamite Duchess, I wonder if you think Total Chaos sucks even more then, because saying otherwise is just not consistent - being pressured to find the items necessary to survival (and unable to do so) is a lot worse than stuck for some time obtaining an item to progress further (and succeeding anyway, although not without cracking your brain a bit). Or did you play Dynamite Duchess with respawning monsters? That way it could live up to the bullshit that is Total Chaos, indeed.

That's a lot of words used to completely gloss over my complaints... You DO have to find 3 random teacups spread out over 5+ different maps and place them on an arbitrary table in one room. You DO have to place heads on statues, but only specific ones... I wouldn't recommend Hexen to a casual player and I wouldn't recommend Dynamite Dutchess to a casual player... it's simply too cryptic for anyone who doesn't have hours to slog through a massive item hunt... or bowl repeatedly until it breaks for some unknown reason. "Non linear" doesn't have to mean "wander aimlessly until you possibly find what you're looking for."
Total Chaos was mentioned for the Mordeth and Ship of Theseus--for its technical marvel--not because it was fun. Completely moot point. If you feel the need to throw yourself on this grenade because you feel personally threatened that someone might find technical faults with a project that agrees with your political philosphy, knock yourself out. I'm just telling you tehnical issues the project has that would need to be ironed out before I'd recommend casual players try it out.

I too, am infact, a proud fascist. Hence why I joined these boards. but I really wish the DBPs would sometimes spend longer than a month. Yeah honestly, that way I'd actually have time to finish a fucking map. Eh who cares I hate being told how to make levels anyway.

scubasteve, your complaints are not objective for fuck's sake, I'm telling you this for yet another time. Yes, I do need to spend time on this game, and I wouldn't recommend it to someone who only has 15 minutes before sleep to play and be over with it, or to someone who plays without saves. Yes I might be feeling stuck at times, but no matter which cryptic path I went, and in what order I've collected the items/inserted them, there is a way forward that I will find eventually (the project is surprisingly well-tested in this regard). Yes this is not your typical shooter, and I am completely ok with that. Yes there are classes of damage, and you do need to dig what enemy is vulnerable/resilient to what damage type/weapon on medium and higher difficulties, I'm surprised you weren't frustrated with this, because this is actually harder than finding occasional objects you missed. Yes the soundtrack is absolute dope, but then again, tastes differ and maybe someone doesn't like this music genre, just as you don't like Hexen-like gameplay. Yes this game might eventually become completely standalone, it feels that way already. And it would be cool if this game was recognised so that people actually interested in this kind of gameplay are able to find it. No, I am not personally threatened about someone finding technical faults even if he does. So far, you are just being rude, what's with you calling Impie a "pariah", telling him he needed to respect your "critical thrashing" that is purely subjective, or even "knock yourself out" line you addressed to me. You also use loaded words that attribute judgement to whatever you say. There is nothing wrong with the actual activity you described as "wandering aimlessly" except for the way you put it into words. Sadly, I'm not good at putting my experience into words either - and hence why my post also tend to be so large, but my experience with this game felt very good, and award-worthy. I also consider the Cheogsh trilogy to be award worthy, even if I have a lot to complain about third installment (I played it on UV difficulty, and I also suck at platforming). Cheogsh trilogy had Hexen gameplay on steroids, if you don't like Hexen you'll cry oceans on these. It did get a cacoward and two runner-ups, and if you think time have changed and it shouldn't even get it today, well suffice to say I am disagreeing a lot with the decision making behind cacowards. Yes, Cheogshes, for instance, are absolutely NOT for "casual players" as per your definition - that is someone expecting the game to play exactly like Doom wads held in high esteem by specific community as dictated by people who specifically spent a lot of time in this community and reached an agreement on what is a good gameplay. There are a lot of people who never registered into this specific community, and that have played Doom for their own enjoyment, and where this people to suddenly coalesce into community, you might find that the way they prefer to play is completely different from yours. However, because their views are at odds with the DW community, they are not feeling welcome in it, are not registering or are bullied away by it. Thus don't even get me started at how legitimate do I think your definition of "casual player" is. In fact, I'm thinking we should strike out "switch hunts are bad" and other tropes that DW community believes in, and rather look for the ways to reach out and get feedback from people who may have completely different perspective on what is fun and what is not. People who may not even want their Doom to be fast pace, etc. There are a few topics on that in "Mapping Workshop", and I recall writing something alongside an FDA to some DBP that was in development that highlighted stuff that pertains to how I think gameplay can make or break the perception of the map world as a virtual reality and not simply a map with gameplay. For example, I hinted that lava should be damaging, and that someone would walk into it expecting it to be damaging, and will feel odd if he doesn't take damage, and that such acts as walking into lava don't make sense gameplay-wise but do make sense when one is probing the limits of virtual reality (does the immersion break somewhere or not). I'm not going to repeat that here. P.S. You are not the only person that feels like a visitor with an account and not a doomer-boarder, that is, there is a distinctive vibe about you. I've noticed certain people with the same vibe (I don't know how to call you precisely, but you spend most of your time on DW) have the propensity to come across as rude. Might be because the community of your choice - doomworld - is toxic and conditioned you to pass judgement on other people or just any stuff, thinking you are making valuable feedback that way? Because that's what toxic means - a toxic community is a community that warps your mind in such a way you are acting that way everywhere you go. I would actually point out people who I believe to be toxic, but I have no time for such extensive arguments. P.P.S. Ha, I think I might be onto something into figuring out why Doomworld community is toxic and how that toxicity is made up. You like to act like judges (or critics), and there is like a consensus so that people are conditioned to judge the same things - or people - the same way. Judging the same way is a way of connecting between people in your community. See, doomer boards community is made up differently, hence why it feels less toxic place to me, apart from "Thy Flesh Consumed" subforum, where people go up to eleven with their confidence that they are right, and thus pass judgement on other people/stuff just like you Doomworlders do everywhere, and argue it to death. Our connection to each other is not due to us being chair critics, even if we occassionally engage in that too.

Anyone who thinks Dynamite Duchess is "cryptic" would have their head explode if they tried playing a point-and-click adventure game from the 90's, like Sam and Max Hit the Road or Leisure Suit Larry. Some people enjoy getting stuck for a second, mulling over clues and exploring, and then figuring a puzzle out. Equating "cryptic" with "bad" is subjective and doesn't explain how games on the SCUMM engine sold millions of copies.

Levels have to be fun to get lost in for cryptic to be equated to a good thing, imo.. like how Heretic was for me.. I swear I wish I forgot everything about video games just so I can revisit that game again back when the levels felt real.
edit: ah damn... 999th post, need to save my next one for a low effort anti climatic shitpost.

Getting stuck on E1M6 for days till finding out the switch that raises the stairs to the green door. Also, later on figuring out the secret exit on the same map. Yep, those were the days.

That's entirely true, but don't you think that the genre being dormant (with very few exceptions) since the 90s means they're no longer popular? Same with PS1/N64 style collectathons. So any WAD based heavily on puzzles and collecting things will always be a love-it or hate-it affair.

Tldr; Wtf is this thread about? www.doomworld.com/profile/16880-rd/content/?type=core_statuses_statusA Cacoward judge and Doomworld mod (rd) will "not support or endorse" the Doomer Boards because we're "fascist", which I assume means we will not be getting a Cacoward for DBP37, which was pretty popular on Doomworld (90-something likes, last I checked). Ah! The modern problem of most communities and its vile but thinly-veiled authoritarian approach is to grand-stand and censor. Now if you really want to solve the problem with the Caco-Awards then you're fighting an uphill battle. You can't technically compete with a legacy brand. Doomworld, currently, is the single-source of vintage doom related media and I wouldn't be surprised if SOME form of aid is given to them by Bethesda. Legacy media is a great narrative utility for tertiary consumers of a product whom will be too apathetic to delve deep into any alternative no matter how correct you are. This is an old problem most underground groups have. The only real solution is grass-root covert infiltration. You want to be where these tertiary players are and gradually guide them but not to here. This is the hot-spot Doom World warned them of and authority = status to casual players wanting to have fun; however, you can guide them to wads/mods NOT eligible for cacowards and believe me there's thousands of those. You can try hitting 4chan's /vr/, Zandronum servers (discord), and other places many out of the rings of the social strata congregate. Just don't tell them who you are.

And if "Dynamite Duchess" - which is both incredible AND extremely fun to play - for some reason doesn't get a cacoward, then the political bias behind the DW awards would still be proven and exposed. One of the main reasons I rarely ever post here anymore is because I got bored to death of moronic conspiracy garbage. I thought it would just be limited to politics but I guess it's not surprising the victim complex stretches into the realm of Doom as well.
Have you actually played the other frequently nominated wads in the Cacowards thread? There's like ~25 other wads that just as fun, if not more fun in the running this year. The thing is though, to admit that, you have to be honest with yourself and check out all the fierce competition. So.. have you actually bothered to check them all out..? or is this more sounding off after zero research as is the norm around these parts? Just want to double-check whether or not anything has changed or it's just business as usual still.
All the criticisms of the subjectivity of the award are nonsensical, but the interesting twist is how they're dripping with desperation - just like the related conspiracy theories that are sprouting up in this thread. The Cacowards is not a "people's choice" award and never has been, it's decided by a panel of judges with their own subjective tastes, so pointing out the fact that it will continue to be purely subjective just as it always has, and that some great wads may not make it in proves... Nothing. Nothing at all, other than that a panel of judges didn't find it to be top 10 material considering all the other stuff on offer this year. Great wads have "missed the bus" every year, and the output in 2021 is frankly legendary in terms of sheer size. One of the most wad-full years in recent history.
I guess the big difference here is that most wads don't have fans who are chomping at the bit to make up wacky, politically-fueled garbage to smear Doomworld and the Cacorwards panel, and to preemptively explain away why the wad may not make the top 10 this year. Most wad fans don't have that kind of ulterior motive, they aren't really concerned with trying to "prove the Doom world is out to get them". I have a feeling when the Cacowards roll around, most people won't resort to crying about how Doom-oppressed they are when their favorite wad gets ranked at #11 or #21 or whatever, and thus doesn't make it into the main feature. They'll probably just accept that it's a totally subjective award anyway and have fun with it.
A people's choice award would be interesting, I've wondered about something like that for years. The conspiracy theories are really moronic and stretching HARD for an excuse to play the victim card though.. It's flat-out embarrassing, I genuinely got secondhand goosebumps of cringe when I read your unhinged rants and just had to post about it. Oh and before you say "Oh if there are actually other good wads this year why don't you name them??" Uh sure, no problem, this is just from the first 6-7 months, whittling it lower than this by November will be nearly impossible:
- Heartland - Time Tripper - Refracted Reality - URE2020 - KINDa - Lullaby - Tarnsman's Projectile Hell - Doom 2 In Spain Only - Plutonia 7 - Arrival - DOOM Damnation - AUGER;ZENITH - MSCP - RAMP (biggest community project of all time by a wide margin, far as I can tell) - Zone 400 - NAMELESS - Snap the Sentinel (seems unfinished though) - Hell's Farthest Shore - Archi-Tek
And there's probably at least 10 more awesome wads I'm not even aware of, if not more..
So, is Duchess in the conversation? Of course. I'm not a Cacowards panel judge or writer, but it would be ridiculous for it not to be, based on what I've seen and played. BUT - if it doesn't make it into that (clearly heavily coveted) top 10 slot, does it prove the whole world is out to get you and everyone who thinks like you..?
No. All it proves is that the panel had more fun with some other wads. Pretty simple stuff, really.
In bygone years, I'd be pretty much certain that at least one of the big projects I've been heavily involved with this year would win - .MID the way id did, Bourgeois Deathmatch, and Ray Mohawk 2 are all awesome and really fun. I don't give a shit that I had a big hand in all of them, I'm not going to lie about it, they're all very well constructed projects. Most years I'd be willing to put money on at least one winning.. but this year? I'm really not so sure.
In fact, I'll be pretty stunned if one does manage to scrape into that main feature. The competition is fucking fierce and I don't need to lie to myself about how the DW cacowards panel still holds a bunch of the dumbass shit I've said over the years against me or whatever, and that's why I won't win.. No, I actually have nuts, so I can just accept that there's other wads from this year that, all bullshit aside, are probably a little better, even despite all the elbow grease and many hours I put into those fucking things.

Most of you guys don't give a single damn about genuine oppression and yet you have the gall to hypocritically cry about hypothetical future snubbings of wads like it proves you're the "downtrodden Doomer class". As if the vast majority of you didn't end up in this shitcan deservedly, or even intentionally. Playing nice with others is something most 3rd graders are capable of, and yet you were not, so everyone said fuck off loser. At least have the sac to own the utterly, UTTERLY DUMB shit you've said that ended you up banned everywhere else in the Doom community. It's a much better look than these crocodile tears. Not sure how some bad behaviour is a good reason to get ignored forever, if they even did bad things in the first place. 40? Gave a second chance to SArais. TOS? Random. glenzinho? Random. kyka? arguing with staff. There are many more I forgot, I'm sure. The only one which is admittedly bad is joe-ilya's but it still is far from getting ignored forever. Also, I'm not sure why snubbings aren't possible, looking at how badly they hate this forum, because this forum hates DW and it doesn't ban people forever for being toxic once or other stuff.

@good-Old: Man, you quoted the literal one bit of my post I decided I should remove after thinking it over. I was talking like this was still the little place with 40-50 members that it was for the first few years when I was more active here. The forum was directly started as a place to house banned Doomworld members and the political argument shitstorms. Several of the people I was thinking about had knowingly and intentionally burned their bridges with Doomworld and the rest of the community. Since that time, hundreds have joined this forum who I don't know, so it's not right for me to make such a sweeping statement with that considered. I have to say though, what's funny is all the names you're rattling off are ones that have little-to-nothing to do with what I was talking about when I made this point. This was a rant of a long time DB member and one of the first, to give some context. Sucks that you singled out the one line I quickly decided was way too presumptuous considering my long absence and wanted to remove. Oh well. (Also, harmless-as-fuck Joe-Ilya "admittedly bad"? He's like the softest/kindest member of that list, rofl. Your post reeks of ignorance of old community history, which is probably a good thing, it's a bunch of shit not worth dredging up.)
@kontra Kommando: Oh, of course, by several people in fact. The world is full of people ready to pass insanely harsh judgements at the drop of a hat. I try not to be like that, or at least reconsider my positions even after I've taken them. I just ignored the occasional moronic accusation or bit of hate directed my way.
I was never an outright asshole to anyone and never threw around "begging to get banned" words, and so I never was banned. I think I might have skirted the line a couple times in 2017, the year where my old marriage fell apart and I was mentally in the shit, but because I never dropped trou and shit the floor proverbially speaking, stuff like pointlessly posting a bunch of porn pics on forums or whatever else got people banned, I was never kicked out.

That's actual criticism of the wad itself. Too bad your opening statement was about someone's political opinion that you didn't like (even though I agree that it's misinfo).

Man, you quoted the literal one bit of my post I decided I should remove after thinking it over. Your post reeks of ignorance of old community history, which is probably a good thing, it's a bunch of shit not worth dredging up.) Whoa, I didn't even read the post. I just skimmed through it. I didn't even know you mentioned it.

Also wtf man, you know we aren't "fascist" so why are you all up in our shit like this? This is pure hyperbole. We also aren't all of the same opinions. For example I strongly support vaccines, while some don't. I speak my mind about it, but we don't hate one another for those differences.

Doomkid, I know you're a good guy, it is a bit disheartening to see you come back here to lambasted the board.

I never called anyone a fascist. What are you referring to? I said a good chunk of the original 40-50 people here were just banned Doomworld refugees, many of whom intentionally burned their bridges/relationship with Doomworld.. That's not calling anyone fascist, but it's the truth behind the origin story of these boards. Reply to what I've actually said man, the shit about the Cacowards, rather than one sentence I hastily ranted off then decided to delete (which still had nothing to do with fascism..)

When I was talking about bad, I meant the forced "get my map into the project instead of processingcontrol's" incident. Still not banworthy, but I guess I had to mention the least "not banworthy" thing to not appear like I'm just ignoring all the actual bad things, I guess.

My bad, I should have been clearer. Tbh, I didn't read the thread and someone linked a DW post of some guy I never heard of calling us fascist and that was the reason why DBP37 can't win a cacoward. I thought was the reason for the thread tbh. I'm pretty aloof to what is happening nowadays.

I honestly don't know what it is you're trying to communicate to me, Good-Old. But, Kontra, I'm not one to throw accusations of "fascism" around lightly. I disagree strongly with the politics of some of the "old guard" members here, of course. We had a shitload of long, drawn out arguments in the day. I just got bored of that shit... but I never threw the dreaded hyperbolic F-bomb around though, and still haven't.
