Hi everyguys,
You've probably heard some people saying "any argument made by a person with an anime avatar is irrelevant to the discussion", which usually implies that anybody with an anime avatar is a moron...
About 2 years ago, when I started my "posting career" on DW, I sort of used to think the same. I thought people with anime avatars are childish and stupid (and the same applied to people with MLP or furry avatars). Actually, now that I think about, I probably disliked them because of how popular these avatars were. Every single forum or community had its fare share of people with anime/MLP/furry avatars, and sometimes there were more people with these avatars than people with "normal" avatars. In other words, I regarded anime avatars as "mainstream", and back in the day for me the words "mainstream" or "popular" were the equivalent of "garbage" (and they still, sort of, are). But then my opinion gradually changed. I don't know, maybe it was that "Doomworld anime trend 2016" thing or something else... Eventually, I realised that "hey, those anime girls are actually so cute!". Then I began to adore people with cute anime girl avatars, no matter who they were IRL. Then I began collecting various cute anime fan art and I think I became a bit too obsessed with it. That being said, I'm not really a fan of anime itself (I've only watched 1 full-length anime film, ever, and watched only a half of some one-season anime series, and that's it). I just really got to love this cute a.f. art style. And now I put a cute anime girl on my avatar anywhere possible...
Alright, I better stop here. Anyway, I kind of want to hear your opinion on anime avatars (or people with said avatars).

I know everyone wants to thrash this thread, but I wanna offer an honest opinion: Tbh, I don't really care about anime avatars, cartoony avatars or anything that isn't associated with some hated people. I think a lot of people hate on anime avatars because of people who have them. Just look at the list of people Doomer Boards hate: A lot of them have furry or anime or MLP avatars. I guess, its mostly hate due to an association? In my fiery hot days of fandoms, anyone with an anime avatar wasn't more hated than anyone with a Harry Potter avatar, or a creepypasta avatar. We were all "sickos" and "fanboys/fangirls" in some sense, it didn't really matter, if anything, it helped locate a dear friend if he made a post while scrolling the feed, like, I had a good friend who had a catgirl avatar (there are a lot of girls in fandoms, believe me), who made good stories on this FB group, so when I would scroll through the feed, whenever I saw that funny brown catgirl avatar, I would stop, see if it was my friend, and if it was... well, what would I do? I had only met with this concept of "If you have a anime profile you are a gay moron" after my fandom days, so I kinda felt insulted at first: a lot of my online fandom friends are all good people who make just as enough sense as the next person without an anime profile picture. Then, afterward, I realized this is one of those weird "been on the internet since 1991 I kno shit u dont suck my dolongo" trends, that doesn't touch the online realm of fandoms, but are rather involved with politics and other toxic discussions on the internet. Urgh. Memes. In conclusion, I won't treat anyone differently based on whenever they have an anime avatar or not. I have good enough experience to not judge people by their looks. I will, however, pay more attention if someone has an anime avatar of my favorite anime, like JJBA. Also suggestion; if you love anime art, feel free to learn how to make art, and if you already know, why not watch it, or read manga? You don't have to watch moeshit if it bothers ya, 80's manime is just as cool as fuck Oh yeah, I guess people hate anime avatars because of who has them, nowadays a lot of alt-rightears who are involved into political discussions *cringe* have them, so maybe that? Prolly just a stereotype issue.

For some reason to me they seem out of place on sites that aren't related to anime. Maybe I got too used to the idea that anime is this cult phenomenon that only we hardcore nerds are into, but now it's almost like everyone is okay with it and has seen at least a series or two, so it's not our special thing anymore, and perhaps that annoys me. But I think the annoyance has more to do with the fact that whenever someone sets an anime avatar, usually it's a cute little girl drawn in the post-2010 style. Anime has such a deep history and so much variety in expression, but a lot of people seem to focus just on the modern moe aspect, which feels like misrepresentation and missing the point.
And it also has to do with the quantity of course. Having just a few people with anime avatars can be even a bit refreshing. But when it turns into a trend, that's another story. I guess I dislike trends in general.
My avatars here, on Doomworld, and in Discord all come from anime, but I dare to say they are more interesting that the standard stuff.

The "cute" anime girl avatar is almost certainly an act of attention-seeking, in my opinion. I associate it with insecurity and immaturity. Anime in general is fine with me, though, as I watch quite a bit myself, even if there's a few trends within it (that I assume are a cultural thing) that I'd rather were broken.

I think that people like to change often avatars with recent stuff that came out or that they watched, I did this too and cute girls (or more broadly characters) are more recognizable and draw more attention.

Because of how 95% of all anime girl profile pictures look like children, I read every post made by someone with them in the voice of a little girl in my head.
Arguments are almost impossible to listen to because of it.
I also don't like anime that much, I've seen like 2 anime I didn't hate.

I don't have any strong opinions about it one way or the other. For me, avatars are just identifiers. Hell half the time I don't even read the name of the poster, because I see their avatar and remember who they are.
For example, when I see the black and white WXR radio with the attacking cacodemon...I know it's 40oz. When I see any Frank Zappa avatar, I know it's Doomkid. Battleready Kirby? Well Hell...we all know who that longwinded fucker is!
I'm pretty sure that whenever anybody sees a spinning cacodemon, they know it's an asshole talking out of his ass.

You can like anime, but if you change your avatar into some character from a show you don't know much about you're fucking stupid. Pretty much all of the avatars I had came from video games I had played at least once, most of them JRPGs which I have a hard-on for. Just look at the one I have now. I find it iconic.
Also the "cuter" the avatar is, the less I will end up liking a poster, especially if they keep getting into stupid arguments. Also I legitimately prefer anime dudes over dudettes.

I watched hentai once or twice for the enormous floppy tits but lately real people porn is better and so is real people actors/actresses, so I don't really have any interest in anime.
I have about as much frustration with anime avatars as I do with any avatar that has the doomguy face sprite or the doom player sprite on it. They just all look the same and it makes it a little harder to tell people apart than having a more unique avatar would. I think people would be more interesting in general if they chose to use avatars that weren't popular. Having an avatar is a little distinguishing symbol of your identity.
Is there a reason other than "they're cute" that people wear anime avatars for? It seems almost like a social movement thing, because I vaguely remember most of the main people from Back To Saturn X abandoning their unique avatars that they've kept for nearly a decade to cycle through a variety of anime girl avatars at roughly the same time. It wasn't much later that esselfortium came out as a transgender woman, so I thought that may have been some sort of movement to support people coming out as transgender. Is that true or was it purely conincidental that those things happened at relatively the same time?

I watched hentai once or twice for the enormous floppy tits but lately real people porn is better and so is real people actors/actresses, so I don't really have any interest in anime. Hentai is just... bad. It's an entirely different realm than anime but is somewhat closely related to it. It is like porn parodies of real things, and you can see those in "real people" porn as well. Almost all of hentai is somewhat motivated by rape and non-consensual sex so I myself just... dodge that thing. It is, however, a market on its own, and just because many people consume it, digital artists can make money out of commissions. I myself even thought to engage in this, but I decided not to, and just practice my stuff. Well, ask anyone why they have one and they would probably tell they just wanna pay some respecc to their favorite show and or game, but indeed it can be a bit agitating to have attention-grabbers to who don't know much about their avatars. I am pretty sure plenty of wielders today are doing it for the memes or some form of "irony", like "Doki Doki Literature Club" avatars, and what I find a bit agitating myself, "Mugi" from "K-On" being... hmm... spammed. What are surely more annoying than attention-grabbers, IMHO, are memers who just want to bring bad voice to anime by just calling it all "pedo porn" or some variation. People who thought their avatars are cool but are clueless of their origin, are kinda annoying, but what surely grinds my gears is seeing one of the memers going:"Lel Im anime trash i fap to hentai everyone call me kittychan i can roleplay owo". I wanted an anime avatar for myself, and I had many inspirations to take from, but in the end, I decided to draw my own avatar: This way I can preserve my "unique identity" while paying homage to all the media influencing myself (games, movies, shows, anime, music). I am, however, inspired by this thread to make a "humanized" version of my avatar. Thx Lil' Devil, for the inspiration!

I think people would be more interesting in general if they chose to use avatars that weren't popular. Having an avatar is a little distinguishing symbol of your identity. So much this. If you've just watched the latest episode of a new popular show and got the urge to put the main character on your avatar, DON'T. SIMPLY DON'T. Glad to inspire you, BattleKorbi! So, yeah, I fully agree that people shouldn't put popular characters on their avatars. That just makes them a part of a grey mass of boring unoriginal people, in my opinion. That's why I decided to put an original and uncommon character on my- ah... who am I kidding. I literally stole this touhou character from Azuruish's avatar (a speedrunner from DW), although my avatar is very different from his animated gif. Atleast, I haven't found any other people using this character, so I guess I'm OK. Anyway, I'm glad about so many responses! Even though some of them are not exactly positive.

Okay, Li'l devil , here's another opinion. "Anime" or "manga" is just a (japanese) drawing style if you think about it. You could have anything drawn in that fashion as your profile picture. But I'm thinking that this topic is about the so-called "cute girls", and not anything else. I would rather base my opinion of a forum member on what they write rather than their choice of picture, but then there are correlations. An individual can transcend those, of course, but if we're speaking in general terms... --- Having a "cute anime girl" as your picture tells me that I have little in common with you, and that we probably like Doom (or whatever the messageboard theme is) for different reasons. You probably are more interested in pissing about in a forum talking nonsense rather than playing the game or doing anything worthwhile related to it. It is impossible to have any meaningful discussion with you if I have a contrary opinion. You are an attention whore, and you're dying to tell everyone about private stuff which anyone sane wouldn't bring up in a public setting, maybe because you have no-one to confide in in real life. Or maybe you're just stupid. My guess is on both. --- Not very postive, unfortunately, but there you go.

At first I honestly found them annoying but I'm so used to it by now because they're not just on Doomworld but everywhere. Youtube, Twitter, other game forums, you name it. About 1/3rd of social media stuff (especially if gaming related) seems a girly anime avatar. It rarely seems to be something that's at least badass like Goku or Vegeta or whatever, 90% of the time it looks like a 10 year old anime girl. I'm not really sure what brought on this imo pretty strange trend but it happened in I wanna say 2014/2015? and has continued since.
I only have a small handful of anime shows I like (pretty much just Dragonball and One Punch Man) so I have no clue where any of them come from. I would never 'rule someone out' so to speak just because they have an anime avatar though. If their posting is sensible or entertaining then it's a non-issue in my mind. Even then, totally retarded bullshit can come from anyone with any avatar as proven countless times.

You are an attention whore, I'm interested in breaking this down, the idea that anime avatars are for people who need attention. I don't know if this is entirely true. I feel like there's a more difficult reason behind it that still hasn't been unpacked. The reason I say this is because I'm not seeing how the avatars are particularly attention getting at all. They're very inconspicuous in the sense that an average person like me sees no significance in any of them. It would make more sense to pick an avatar that stands out from the pack rather than assimilate into what everyone else is doing. If the goal really was to get more attention, I think people would have gravitated more towards something similar to 90's popup ads.

Well, the anime industry is very good at creating extremely adorable characters. The artists know where exactly to put a mole on the girl's cheek in a way that will attract the maximum number of people. So perhaps putting a lovely anime girl on the avatar can be seen almost like cheating? It could be compared to jump scares in horror movies or cute puppies in vegan commercials. Yes, they will cause a reaction, but it's pretty much just a cheap trick, an attempt to appeal to everyone's primitive instincts. "Oh, I can't dislike this user if they have such an innocent looking creature next to their name!". Or something?

"Oh, I can't dislike this user if they have such an innocent looking creature next to their name!". haha, but look at the reaction in this thread, though... it's pretty much the opposite of what you wrote and whenever I argue online.. it's like an 80% chance I get referred to and dismissed by my avatar. Dunno... where your eyes look at something that appears adorable, someone else might look at the same picture and see something that's obnoxious and unwholesome (on top of an already slanted bias based off past forum interactions with sarcastic and condescending anime avatars). ;P

Well, I don't use my avatar to get attention. I just want something cute to go with my posts. It just kinda makes me feel better about myself, since IRL I'm anything but cute, lol. I dunno, if I wanted to get attention, I'd just post some stupid/funny stuff. This topic, BTW, isn't meant to be attention-seeking, I just asked for opinions.

Oh my gosh not this shit...
I don't give a single damn what people use as their avatar, don't know where this garbage with "if you have an anime avatar your opinion doesn't count" originated from and don't want to know either. I like anime as well but I'm not obsessed unlike some other fans who seem to not shut up about them. So in short, everyone should put whatever they like as their avatar, preferably something representative, that's even better, but this kind of bullshit is just annoying to see, it's way past being funny or whatever. The only place I could probably agree with using nothing instead as your avatar if you don't want/are afraid to using a pic of yourself as one would be social media, but other than that, to each his own, and leave it at that...
