Not to be the monkey who wears mafia attire that kicks the door down and proceedes to shoot everyone in the room with dual tomi guns.. but there's so many dimensions in this thread that I find annoying.. As much as before clicking into the thread I was hoping that the OP didn't have an anime avatar, before rushing to condemn all anime avatars.. did anyone stop at the red flag where OP said he doesn't even watch anime?  If you're looking for someone to make an example of.. I think you're targeting the wrong person. And I don't want to smear OP's character because this is might just be me, but the first thing I thought when I saw the avatar wasn't "dawww, so cute and wholesome!", and more "ugh, more fanservice.." especially if you look at the whole picture. ;P Another thing is, I don't get why people have to point out that they're a "moderate" anime fan that isn't one of THOSE guys.. "hey guys I'm one of the sane anime fans!" to someone that doesn't watch anime.. it's like saying "hey guys I listen to metal but I'm not one of THOSE elitists that only listens to metal and has to wear a shirt, I like other music, too!" to someone that doesn't listen to metal. Because even if I was a moderate, so what if someone else lost himself in a hobby? It's way more rewarding to lose yourself in 1 or 2 hobbies than to become a jack of trades and master of none over 10 hobbies, we're all part of a niche that nerds the hell out of a game that's reaching 25 years old on an obscure forum, the further you dig into Doom as a hobby the more rewarding it gets when you start to find megawads like Alien Vendetta, get a favorite author and watch how his style slowly evolves over time, being able to not only FINALLY appreciate Brad Spencer's slaughter maps the third time time you wage a fiery path through Alien Vendetta.. but to thrive off them!! Engaging with the community, making friends, discussing finer details and mapping styles and joining forces and map together!! It's the same with music as well, exploring and getting lost in a genre of music where the lesser known bands destroy the more well known names... this is all cool! If someone is an eccentric that loves anime and has watched around 6 months - a year's worth of hours (and some people have), it's impossible to watch this much and not have explored past the gateway stuff, have characters that you become very endearing and sentimental towards, have favorite directors who make use of different story telling methods and different art styles styles, confide in the genre, join a forum and make friends through discussing their hobby, it's probably helped keep their mind off real life drama or personal issues, or even deal with said drama directly and they're arguably more justified in having their avatars than a lot of other people who have avatars that aren't necessarily anime avatars, have already justified their avatar to themselves and wouldn't have to start a thread on Doomer Boards asking if it's ok to have an anime avatar (haha no offence).. being shit to them over it is retarded, and yes I'm talking about the "cringey" crowd that takes anime seriously, btw.. meming is funny and all and I specialize in self depreciative weeb jokes, but they're actually a lot more like you than you might realize. ;P I mostly agree with numetal maniak's post... but make exceptions for people whom I described in the above paragraph. PS: yes Memfis, yes... you're unique just like everyone else, personally.. I like my overrated characters.  |

Well, a lot of people like and want to say "But I am not one of those guys" for an good reason. Just like a lot of overly-indulgent fanboys and fangirls, people can be obnoxious about what they love, and as we had all heard of fedora-tippers. Now, does anyone want to be an fedora tipper? Does anyone want to talk about anime with complete strangers, preach sermons of it's superiority, this and that? Does anyone want to bother listen to it? Does anyone want to have a friend that does that over and over? I don't think so, really. It takes another epic fan for an epic fan to get friends. And as you have already presumed, I am in the demographic of "But I am not one of those guys". A large part of my "fandom life" is influenced with anime, be it 80's manime or modern day moe-stuff, I find no discrimination (except hentai, man, I fucking hate non-consensual sex in media and real life), and there is this certain aesthetic that goes around with anime that is cool and awesome as fuck. It just appeals to the childish fantasies of young age and nails it. My "artstyle" is influenced a lot by anime, be it the way characters behave, the way characters look like, the way their powers function, the way they interact, in my mix-and-mash mashup of different artstyles and storytelling techniques, at least 40-50% of it is accredited to manga and anime. If that speaks something. But I like to think that it is good to bounce around things you like and not overly-indulge yourself immediately: with more hobbies, you can never really get bored out of your soul, but when limiting an amount of hobbies or fandoms you can enjoy, the chance that it gets boring and tiring increase proportionally. That is why I don't leave out italian comic books out of my "arrangement", nor do I leave western music, games and shows/movies in the dust either. I just happened to read a lot of italian comic books as a youngster, and I loved them, I don't see why should I forget they exist just because of anime. I love the way the "west" handles music and games, because... well, not a big fan of jrpgs (I am bordering on hating them), and just a lot of things today are inspired by western music, cannot forget it exists. My currently fav artist; Hirohiko Araki, is a westaboo who listens to western rock and pop, if not hip-hop all the time, and had traveled the world, and was in Italy. Yall can see why he is currently my favorite  Mind you, I didn't remain a fan of things not-anime just because of some respect or something, I actually enjoy that stuff still, if not a bit more, thanks to anime That being said, I don't want to go to Japan nor am I but 10-20% a weeb, I just find anime as awesome as everything else and don't want to leave out all sorts of cultures and artstyles just because one trend is more influential than the others. Now, why did I dedicate two paragraphs to describing myself? Just look at the way yall read this. Did you groan and say "geez, another fedora tipper" or did you got piqued? Or did you groan because of walls of text? Or did you groan because this post makes no sense? Well, to me, I don't mind the groaning as long as I am not being labeled a "fedora tipping weeaboo neckbeard" in the process because that is something I really don't want to be associated with. I don't want to be associated with the socially-anxious trainwrecks that are those fedora-tippers, I'm cool, bitch, ffs. I don't want to lose potential friends nor make enemies just because of a fandomy thingy, if I am not a fan by that definition, fine, I just don't like becoming a neet and I still wanna remain a "normie". And I am sure I am not alone when saying this. If anything makes me special it is the tendency for myself to talk about myself whenever possible :3 |

A brief comment: I'd be surprised if any of the doomerboard regulars instantly dismissed someone by their choice of picture, since that would be unintelligent. None of you seem daft to me. And don't worry, deathevokation & others, you have the wrong type of anime avatar to fit the profile. Just open up any controversial 40oz topic on DW and see what kind of picture his "fans" are using if you want an example of what I meant. Li'l devil, your avatar is also a good match, but fortunately, your postings are not. |

I wanna drop something quick that I think is more toxic than "anime avatars": Pepe avatars. Now, for what the "oldfolk" are anime pictures, for me are Pepe pictures. Even if you use one ironically or not ironically, or whatever, I just simply cannot take any opinion from wielders of those avatars as serious. Even if they want to spark a serious conversation, I just keep thinking that they want to appeal to some 4chan diety and just want to fuck around, and I ignore all comments and postings made by those wielders. Its not like I read them and choose not to reply, I don't even bother reading the first two letters, due to this discrimination that somehow developed inside of me. I think Pepe avatars are worse than anime avatars, because while there is a good chance for people with anime avatars to actually like and enjoy something, those with Pepe avatars seem like bitter lonely people who don't know of life outside of bed. Doesn't help that depressos like to use these avatars as well.
If any of yall use social medium and wield a Pepe avatar, now I don't mind. I just know yall are good people. If I saw any of your for the first time with a Pepe avatar however, I might just purposely ignore ya and even pick fights; it is just that repulsive to me.

Ahh, reminds me of that time when I challenged miano to a duel on the condition that if I win he has to remove that stupid frog. I think that's actually the best solution when you dislike someone's avatar. Call them out! And don't lose...

It was a toss-up between Hisoka, Blair the Catgirl, or just a Jigglypuff; I thought that Jigglypuff would be too manly even for this forum, so I'm going with Hisoka for now.

I've been trying to figure out how to make it look nice on this forum but I don't know enough about HTML to get it to look right. I'm not sure what to do about it yet. I uploaded a bunch of 'default' avatars to this forum, but I didn't realize the forum was automatically assigning the first one. I thought it was a weird coincidence that people were picking it when they signed up. I'd like to get the formatting right eventually but I gotta do some more research. EDIT: I'm working on getting some help for it now. |

Looks fine. though, in hindsight, i think i was talking about the mobile formatting and didn't realize. the phone version pancakes the pic/name out horizontally, where if you scroll by an avatar-less too fast, it looks like a continuation of the post preceding it (because the consistent Black/Orange theme). But I actually don't care too much one way or another on the formatting, and hope i wasn't the one to make you stress over it.

I'm interested in breaking this down, the idea that anime avatars are for people who need attention. I don't know if this is entirely true. I feel like there's a more difficult reason behind it that still hasn't been unpacked. The reason I say this is because I'm not seeing how the avatars are particularly attention getting at all. They're very inconspicuous in the sense that an average person like me sees no significance in any of them. It would make more sense to pick an avatar that stands out from the pack rather than assimilate into what everyone else is doing. If the goal really was to get more attention, I think people would have gravitated more towards something similar to 90's popup ads. Late reply, but I didn't mean that those kind of avatars are used for attention seeking, I judge that by what is posted. I think that avatars with faces or persons somehow catch our attention better compared to stuff like symbols, objects or piece of sceneries. Anime girls (scientific term: bishoujo, so you'll also learn something new  ) are the true masctos of anime (who the fuck is vegeta lol) , even if you don't watch anime when you see them you know what they are, plus anime characters are designed to be as much as likeable and unique as possible. |

thx whats ur profile picture from and my profile picture is from sodom and if you listen to them and you have the cds youre going to notice its lots of their cds not only the agent orange one its even on the blue one which is harder to see but if you look closely it will be a really big version of him , and the name of this character is knarrenheinz which is german and it stands for some dude who carries like 40 guns and i felt like that this is a really good way to show guns and rock music and the guns are a good reference to shooter games too because i play a lot of shooter games too

what is fancy and i dont watch anime because i remember that when i was like 5 or 6 and i didnt want to sleep i was noticing my mother was watching anime sometimes i could hear everything and i was thinking , this is horrible and just strange , and i was thinking she is probalby just stupid but when i try to ask her then she doesnt say anything , and she just says i have to go ... and i wonder if she feels just ashamed
