I was playing MKXL with Jason Voorhees recently. Freaking badass. What I've already said is about all the bad I have to say. It does seem that Warner Bros are really pieces of shit screwing the series. Ed Boon has been wanting to remake Shaolin Monks but apparently they said no. Playing it many years later, I even liked Deadly Alliance.

I guess what I specifically liked about MK9 is that it was a reboot of MK1,2,3 - the favorite classics of my generation - with the same story, but modern art, improved but not overly complicated game mechanics and a lot of cool extras (hidden characters, DLC (already included in the Komplete Edition), costumes, even fully playable bosses (if unlocked with a simple mod).
MKX complicated the mechanics and I wasn't sure how I felt about the 'next generation' storyline. Still, I will probably break down, play it and enjoy at some point.

There is something about modern mortal kombat that fills me with a mild... disgust, I guess.
I'm not against violence in video games, by any means. But there is something about the gleeful, giggling retarded depravity of those fucking games that rubs me the wrong way.

A lot of younger people like MK4 because it's the first one they played, but I think it's the crappiest one of the series. MK Gold is the glitchiest fighting game I ever played and having paid $50 close to Dreamcast's launch for it, it pissed me off enough to go about 18 years before ever buying the MK's that came after. MK4 also looks like ass. The N64 version looks like total dogshit. I like all the other ones, but I currently have no plans to get the new "Mortal Kombat 1" since NRS cucked by Warner Bros dropped MK11 like a rock canceling further development in the works and censored the game post release. Last there was a bullshit 80GB update just for crap in the online store and they only supported it for two years compared to the promised five. Grinding for gear was also total freaking time consuming bullshit in MK11. I haven't played the game since February 2021 I think. I did run it once to see if I had sound to compare against MKXL which some douches introduced a sound bug into over a year ago with some update and never fixed. Found I had to toggle steam overlay off in the settings for MKXL. They last updated MKXL just to advertise MK11 in it. Really fuck Warner Bros. I really disliked MK4 when I was a kid, but my opinion on it improved over time. The 3D looks awful, all the new characters are terrible (except for Quan Chi and Fujin) and Shinnok is unacceptable as a final boss. But the fatalities are excellent and a massive improvement over the cartoonish crap we got in MK 3. The gameplay is OK too. It is simply classic MK gameplay but with a sidestep move to make it 3D, so I don't see any reason to complain.

Yes, it's an OK game, but suffers from all the problems of early 3D games. And I have never played MKGold, except via emulation, but I've heard a lot about its glitches. It's a pity that what essentially was supposed to be the ultimate version of MK4 got a exclusive release of mediocre quality on a forgotten console.

I admit it's not too overall too bad. Just the Dreamcast release however upgraded and expanded was a glitchy screwed up insulting release, especially if you got the initial gold color disc. I later found out there was a red disc version with at least some fixes. And the N64 really looks awful. Any 16 bit port of the original MK looks better. MK3's fatalities were definitely really half-assed compared to MK2, but MK3 was the first one to play really fluidly. The first two were a bit clunky. Mythologies always looked pretty cool and it's interesting to get some prequel story with the original Sub-Zero, Bihan. Since it had 2D digitized sprites people used its characters for Mortal Kombat Projects based on Mugen. I want to get into the PSX version sometime with improvement hacks. I still like all other MK's over 4 though.
Also a lot of games I listed on this topic, I don't really hate. I just simply don't care about them.

speaking of reboots that can get fucked the tomb raider one comes to mind. i've played all games in the series prior to that except angel of darkness, and the reboot is definitely the shittiest of them all, probably including angel of darkness

Undertale - Boring. Tried to like it, but I felt like falling asleep.
GTA V - The campaign is boring, I didn't beat it until two years later. First few missions were alright though.
Borderlands - Obnoxious hippie shit.
And any Nintendo games in general.

But there is something about the gleeful, giggling retarded depravity of those fucking games that rubs me the wrong way. It doesn't disgust me but I hate it. I love violence and gore, but the new MK games do it in such a lame, forced way that gets repetitive to look at. Supposedly the developers were forced to watch real videos of gore, cartel executions and such, in order to make the gore as realistic as possible. Apparently they watched those shitty new low-budget cartel videos where they use CGI, because everything looks like rubber, wax, and jelly in the game. Some of the fatalities are fun to watch ONCE. The supposed shock value of pulling someone's eyeballs through their anus while hanging them by their intestines as missiles assault their exposed brain wears off a bit after you've seen it 312 times. And the X-Ray moves are even worse: the same tryhard animations over and fucking over again every single match. In the old games, everything felt and looked more natural, the fatalities and such added a black humor edge, especially for when the games were made. Now the games try as hard as possible to shock, but it's 2023 and MK is about as shocking as Alice Cooper's geriatric ass.

MK11's Fatal Blows are utterly retarded bullshit. They changed that you can do them when low on life instead of requiring a full super meter. And if you miss, you just get to try again after a number of seconds, again and again for as long as you stay alive. So single freaking every fight you're very likely to see both players do theirs. Then they're longer and more involved than MKX and they seem to be slower as well as MK11 got an all around slowdown compared to MKX (catering to more casual players). So they really get old really freaking fast except for people with the IQ of pond scum. I also hear if you miss five times in a row with your fatal blow, you get a mortal participation medal.
