According to Gematsu, a reliably leaky Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea, there is a new listing for a new id software game titled "Quake 2: Remastered"
There is speculation is that this is a new id software title to be announced in time for QuakeCon.

Kinda dorky if true considering RTX Quake 2 was already a thing 4 years ago

If it's free for those that own the game already on Steam/GOG like they did with the first game, then cool, otherwise, there's no point.

Update here: GGManlives got an early access of it and reviews here.
Summary of the things of note:
- Raytraced lighting, and some modifications to the maps to emphasize it - Updated music - Upscaled 3D models/animations that are true to the base game - Updated/Upscaled cutscenes - Comes bundled with the two mission packs - Comes bundled with Quake 2 64 (from the N64, an original campaign designed for the port) - Comes with a new original campaign (ggman says its kind of a long slog in nice looking environments, very dense monster count and not a lot of new features) - Some bug fixes, and alterations to the enemy AI (sometimes making the game harder than it was originally) - Some other toggleable quality of life features like a compass which gives waypoints to objectives, and a directional damage indicator on the HUD.

Used to play Quake 2 quite often as a kid. Iirc they changed the way bhop works in 2 so not as interested in it as the original but this will still be an instant buy so I can replay it.
Surely there is a mod out there which makes movement more similar to the original.. similar to how the community for Quake 3 made one. Might look this up and refresh my memory of some of the levels.

If this was Doom I would say they were selling GzDoom with every visual filter and shader enabled by default and calling it "Doom Remastered". But to be fair the idea of bundling N64 Quake 2 (the first FPS I have ever played) with it is actually pretty awesome.

It will be cool to fire this up again and play coop. Also I wonder if old mods like Gloom are compatible with this remaster?

a long slog in nice looking environments, I'm unironically sold. Gonna get it as soon as it's out. EDIT: nevermind, it's apparently a free upgrade if you already own the game on steam? I sudddenly have a 3gb Q2 download... EDIT EDIT: five minutes in and they already gave me a bfg. This is gunna be good.

would be an alright way to play through the 64 version if there was a way to toggle the gay wuxia berserker behavior as well as damage indicators (seems to me you can only turn off hit markers, though idk why they would even include them as a default tbqh). did shillmanlives lie to me? what a shock. 0/10

Seen worse nostalgia operations tbh, I'm sort of enjoying the new campaign but I suspect a Doom slaughter aficionado behind it. Also literally every single enemy old and new has some sort of Eternal Doom-ish dickish / twitch reaction / gotcha attack, which is an acquired taste I guess.

Finished the new campaing, outstanding remaster, definitely for a newer generation of players. At times it felt like playing Quake 2016 or Quake Eternal. Very busy / hectic / twitchy compared to the original.

maybe doom 1/2 and quake 1/2 are rather easy nowadays, though they always were and the more difficult classic fps were more of a niche. i don't think inserting modern tropes is the necessary answer to that (or pretending serious sam and painkiller embody some kind of classic formula), they could still make stuff resembling say, requiem avenging angel and wheel of time on hard. but oh well
