Hmm, so it's changed up a bit from original Quake II? Good to know. I guess that falls under the "Remastered" label, as in "technically not the same exact game".
I have to admit a cardinal sin here... I've never actually played a Quake game despite being one of the biggest fans of vertical navigation and exploration. "Run and Gun" and "Combat Puzzles" are cool but aren't my favorite things from Doom 1 and 2, per se. Quake always looked kinda ugly to me though (I like bright, saturated colors).
If I do get this, it sounds like I should consider the original too.

the original is included (there were good source ports already anyway), it's just that you don't get the visual gzdoomisms without the gameplay alterations or the quake 2 64 campaign without the gameplay alterations apparently, which is eh

I'm against gameplay alterations. Unless there's an option for game to behave vanilla of course you always have the original at hand. ;-) for commercial releases, Options Are Evil. you have to test N*M*… number of configurations, it is simply impossible. i know that nobody tests games these days, of course. but the rule's still there.

If there aren't options to play it without altered mechanics I'll be disappointed. Will only be playing for the new maps though since I'm assuming they won't be compatible with yamagi. Have enjoyed the rott release because it can be played vanilla style and there aren't good source port options for that one.

someone should port the n64 levels to something that at the very least hasn't the berserker leaping attack (no one ever liked those kinds of enemies in fps, their programming seems sloppy to me anyway, hitting the ground 20km from the player still counts as a hit)

I saw damage per minute on 4ch vr, including the railgun and the nerfed railgun. Also there was posted a link to the mod, which says it makes railgun's damage 150. www.nexusmods.com/quake2/mods/13?tab=filesNow I less doubt about the nerf.

Yeah, I'm disappointed. For positives I don't mind the new models I've seen and I kind of like the muzzle flashes even if they look out of place. I think they could have been better. Some of the stuff like the new lighting I'm pretty neutral on. Removing the machine gun recoil sort of makes sense but I would prefer an option. Some things just make me scratch my head like the tutorial. The map alterations also seem pointless. I only flew through a few maps but some like in map 1 are probably just for deathmatch while others I've noticed are purely aesthetic. Doesn't really add anything and makes me think they changed things simply because they could. As for the bad, the lack of settings for all the stuff they changed is pretty terrible. First thing I noticed were directional damage indicators which have always annoyed the hell out of me in any game. Then I get an on screen message that they've added stealth damage. I'm not the biggest Quake 2 aficionado but I've played it enough to be fairly confident saying I don't think that was in the original. This is when I realized they didn't really give a damn about the original game, it's design or how it was balanced. I'll still play through the new maps at some point and maybe even the N64 ones but this is not something I would spend money on unless it's the only way to buy the original now.

I've never seen berserkers jump in Quake 2, but in webms on 4ch vr (showing the "remaster")
Is this their original behavior?

berserkers acted basically like pinkies in the original. which is fine if you want to upgrade them, but maybe don't make their attacks undodgeable bullshit either

I'm not the biggest Quake 2 aficionado but I've played it enough to be fairly confident saying I don't think that was in the original. I may have to stand corrected on this. Was scratching my Quake 2 itch with the vulkan renderer for Yagami I just found out about (yes, I already uninstalled the remaster) and it seems like this is a thing, just something I was acting on instinctually without realizing. The berserker leap attack is such a strange thing since I don't think their placement would mesh well with it through a lot of the game. Don't know how it really plays out though since I didn't bother getting to unit 2 to find out.

You know you've screwed up when someone comes up with an unmaster patch that quick. That happen as quick as this with any other remasters?
At least they didn't censor the Iron Maiden or put a dick on her, or cover her in tentacles like the recent Skullgirls butchering/defacement. Please tell me they didn't do either of those, did they?
I liked the Quake 1 remaster except it was bullshit they screwed up the VANILLA EDITING COMPATIBILITY. I don't expect them to support all the stuff people's source ports are doing, but at least get that right.
I think I'll pass on this Quake 2 remaster until Nightdive pulls their heads out of their asses thinking they know game balance better than the people who made it. What kind of diving is that? I could understand tweaking a mission pack, but such balance changes to the base game suck. Maybe I'll grab it on sale in the distant future.
Also Quake 2 is made by only about the half the id that made Quake 1 and Doom 1 & 2. Half the crew left, mostly thanks to that backstabbing scum, Tim Willitis.
PSA: Quake Live is a pussified version of Quake 3 Arena, also missing Team Arena's additional weapons. Quake Champions is capped at 8 players and has ridiculously long load times.
Also somehow I got Quake 3 Arena and Team Arena in Steam, possibly from Steam or Bethesda.net Launcher (which had all its stuff migrated to Steam when it sunset) detecting my legit install. I did a regular legit install of Quake 2 and no such luck and just manually added it to Steam where's it's listed as Quake II compatibility mode. Maybe if I installed it back while the Beth launcher was in operation. Well guess I'm set if there's ever a Quake 3 or 4 remaster.
