Use this thread like the random thread. Post any thoughts/observations/ideas about Doom you had recently that don't really warrant a discussion thread. I'll start: It's weird that out of the three commercial id software mapsets; Evilution, Plutonia, and No Rest For The Living; each one contained one map with "Baron" in the title despite this being Doom's most boring monster. (Baron's Den, Baron's Lair, Baron's Banquet, respectively)

In Doom 2, some of the playable rooms have monster-only teleport lines where the monster(s) could blink to the other side of the room, surprising the player. Most of these lines are used with barons and cyberdemons in maps 8, 10 and 29. As if the designers attempted to give those monsters a new "skill" but ran out of ideas for encounters and dropped it halfway.

Why do people use hardware rendering for Doom? It looks ugly and soulless, breaks neat vanilla tricks (see also: lilith.pk3), and the engine is simple enough that it brings no benefit in performance.
Furthermore, the people who use it more often than not get excited from seeing well-built African-American men ejaculate on their spouses' faces. So what's the deal, hardwarecucks? Am I missing on some action here, unlike your significant others? Just kidding, of course I'm not. My Doom source port preferences elicit quite the excitement among the ladies, and they grant me regular sexual intercourse. Ho€$ love a guy that plays Doom Retro.

I used to swear by Doom and think Duke Nukem 3D is kiddy garbage.
Nowadays, although for sure Doom engine is far more coherent, I have to admit that as a package (engine abilities + levels + gameplay), Duke Nukem 3D is the better game.

Also don't forget weapon and monster variety and uniqueness. I'd say this one is good enough to have its own thread, though most people would probably say Doom is better cause well, it's a Doom forum.

Duke Nukem 3d weapons are garbage:
the pistol is like fast pea shooter the shotgun is worse than that in Doom 3 (2 times weaker, and inaccurate) the chaingun is weak the rocket launcher is ok, its explosion radius is garbage shrinker is slow
the only good weapon is the one that shoots small missiles
the enemy roster as I remember it:
duke
the one with lasers pig chaingunner the one who scratches monkey shark slime octopus second boss third boss
doom
zombe shotgun imp lost soul cacodemon baron demon cyber spider
duke outnumbers doom indeed. duke's enemies make impression of meat shields tbh
the green in palette is just vomit the blue is bleh
the engine is good cuz it renders the world without bsp and is written in C and ASM but the code is barely readable
modding tools never feel like all in one never started mapping, but ran mapster 1 or 2 times
I feel it's bad that could-be-a-good game Redneck Rampage derived the vomit colors, weapons weakness and monster beefness

I'm just now seeing this. In my brain I always thought there were only two gunfire actions in vanilla, GR door open stay (the door one) and G1 floor raise to lowest ceiling (the destroy walls one) Gonna see what kinda weird shit I can do with this today.

I like seeing new stuff in old 90's wads. I was playing Waterworks (FWATER.WAD) from 1996 the other day and there's a control room with computer that has a custom texture on a wall panel that's basically a screenshot of another part of the level where some bars are blocking the path. There's also a switch in that room, and when you press it, the texture changes to show the bars have been raised. Pretty cool!

Recently i realized that what i want to do as mapper, the "worlds" that i'm trying to build, don't go hand in hand with the good old classic Doom design philosophy and enemy roster. This realization was quite discouraging, and keept me away from the editor for almost a month (and counting)... it could be just burn out, it won't be the first time that happens to me, but this time it feels different and i'm overly critical,to a point where i can't stand to look at my maps. No... actually, i can look at them, they're okay visually... what i can't stand is playing them, or watching someone else play them and see how badly my combat falls flat. Maybe mapping isn't meant to be my hobby after all...

It's pretty weird learning that people disliked Doom 64 when it first came out. It lacking the multiplayer mode, the rest of the missing demon cast, the change of theme, and how much the nintendo 64 controller sucked I don't blame them it and anyone who say otherwise obviously blinded by nostalgia, bite me but by the time Doom 3 was released everybody circled back and spoke positive about it.. For me I think it was probably one of midway's magnum opus when it came to doom on console ports, you could tell these guys put in a lot of love in the design and sweat trying to work on the nintendo 64 limited space. Keep in mind of the old saying "99% of all doom maps suck" the maps you find that are good are mostly done by people who have been doing this for a long time. The worst thing that can happen to you is nobody giving you feedback. And I'm gonna be honest with you, I think my maps are pretty generic, mediocre, or bad but at the same time I feel happy having to create it. After reading some quote from some Japanese man that draws gundam. Attachment DeletedI'm probably not the best person talking about this and probably speaking out of my ass, since I go through the same issue except it's mostly, mappers block, lack of communication with other mappers, jealously, and just alot bad habits in general. Hell I'm still stuck working on a monstrosity of a map that should've been finished in June and it's probably gonna turn out bad. But every now and then I feel glad that I at least got to work and post my maps and see other people playing them while giving feedback. So try not to think about too much over how bad your map is or what not just try to focus on your creation, if the combat is bad try to see what can you do if not? There's always people willing to talk to you the next time you feel like something is off.

I just noticed that there's not a "normal" Raising floor to the next floor triggered by walking for Heretic... Raising by shortest lower texture? Sure. Raising and changing floor texture? You betcha. Insta-raising by "lower to highest floor" trickery? Absolutely. Raising by that weird 24 units each time? Fuck yeah. Raising by hitting/shooting a switch? A-ha. Normally raising without any changes or weird gimmick involved? Fuck you Bro.

Fuck you Bro. there is an action 100 which WR opens doors fast (I don't have it my gzdb config for some reason, but it exists and works)
personally I don't like that monsters can't activate elevators.
Zdoom's XLAT can solve all this for good. Or a new source port for Heretic.

Thanks but your creation is really something. It would be amazing to see it realized as a monster in game, not that it shouldn't be killed with fire, but it is truly amazing.
