I think that Doom 64's system of 25 maps + 4 secret maps is superior to Doom 2's 30 maps + 2 secret maps.

Coop is a good and low-stakes way to get people who never played doom excited about it. Everything is better with friends, but generally speaking most wads are huge and easy to get lost in if your new doomer friend dies and needs to follow the trails of corpses to catch up to where the gameplay is happening, especially when keys and switches are involved.
i think good coop wads need to be small maps made of big rooms that reuse/repurpose the same areas a lot.
I also think the multiplayer community is really sleeping on making dedicated team deathmatch maps. Duels and deathmatches only have one winner which makes it really competitive and 99% of players lose. i think it makes deathmatch a lot more fun if players all play a supporting role in helping their whole team win.
I speedmapped a few tdm maps a while back that had territories and miniature puzzles for special weapons and powerups. In deathmatch an invulnerability is too powerful and these puzzles would be to difficult to perform alone when getting shot at in a free for all, but if you have some teammates watch your back you can score an invulnerability so you could score your team a bunch of frags. It needed some tuning but the concepts made for some great objective-based gameplay that id love to revisit again.

For an ongoing russian doom community project (for 30yrs of doom) I've brought an edit of the same texture pack as used in 96kb challenge (not released yet but it had been hosted on Zdaemon by TNS team)
It contains textures from doom1,2,tnt, plutonia, including MC1-20 (DBRAIN cycle in plutonia)
The lead noted that MC1-20 doesn't animate.
Maybe in 96kb nobody used it and thus didn't mention it?
I saw many maps used FIREBLU there.
You know what? Seems like MC1-20 is uglier than fireblu. Isn't it the ugliest doom texture then?

the texture fidgets which ruins the smooth animation because when they made the individual frames they didnt crop the texture right in a few of them.

I was close to notice this in 2016, but somehow thought to look at it again just today. In Doom2.exe there's a const structure (animdefs), which contains not only the names of what to animate, but the durations. They're all set to 8, but if changed, they'll scroll at different speeds for good. Maybe Text replacement feature of OG Dehacked can modify this table, I dunno, so I used hex editor and edited fwater to 3 tics, and it works. In 2016 I thought that 00 byte was like a separator or something and tried to add a custom cycle to animate(by modifying a cycle with long texture names to 2 with shorter ones, it was a final doom exe), but that didn't work(since there's a hard limit on animations, as I noticed in March of this year)

If I was smarter I'd make a new Dehacked that could edit much more of the doom exe than the 1997 OG program could, with all the new findings like yours. Eventually that would make its way to source ports of course. Sadly, I'm not smarter. Maybe one day.

Years ago, my ex (who had no interest in Doom at all) would get mad at me when I'd go to my desk for a few hours to play Doom and then come back in an even worse mood. It helped a little to zone out by being alone and not need to socialize, but it made no sense to her that I didn't come back fully recharged. I'm playing my favorite game, I should be happy right? I didn't really appreciate this insight until much later but playing Doom isn't always fun and it's pretty important to know when it is fun and when it isn't so you don't waste yours and others time doing shit that sucks.

Midtextures kill performance in software renderers. The more redrawn pixels, the worse. Noticed in Tartar (dos source port) @1280x960

Oh no not the performance of a 30 year old video game!!! In non-soy vanilla Doom you'll probably run into an opening overflow before you get a performance hit.

Excluding Doom 64 pretty much every classic console port is terrible, at varying degrees. PSX is the only one that is more or less acceptable but it's still pretty lame

Outside of the texture scheme, high difficulty level and a few visual tropes, Plutonia 2 has little to do with the original Plutonia. If one replaces the texture scheme, tones down the difficulty and add a lot of hitscanners Plutonia 2 could easily pass as a sequel to TNT

I think it could be thought to be a sequel to both at that dev time. Also levels were closer to evilution than release ones

E3M5 and M6 locations depicted on the intermission screen don't really match their corresponding themes. I wonder if there was a coding mistake that swapped the arrow locations.

How did myhouse.wad get popular in the first place? While I'll admit I do like some areas like the airport and the bathhouse, it's boring and cliché as hell, especially with the "hurr durr so deep sob sob" story shit.

It's well made on a technical level and uses some ZDoom specific mechanics in creative ways. It's also fairly accessible to people outside of the Doom community, since it isn't focused on difficult combat or Doom specific mechanics / quirks. I played it right when it came out on Doomworld and had a lot of fun watching a friend of mine who wasn't as into Doom as I was go through it and discover things. The "story" isn't really meant to be anything interesting or crazy, just a sort of creepypasta esque set dressing for the wads aesthetic. The music was cool too.
