store.steampowered.com/app/975370/Dwarf_Fortress/Well, it's finally out. Graphics, mouse support, a UI that isn't a twenty year-old abomination of increasingly arbitrary mental retardation. Shit, I'm told it even has a tutorial. Go show Tarn some love. Lest we forget. Undead zombie bastards, semi-automatic dorf mincers, psychotic chefs, elite martial arts hammer-squads getting their faces melted off by sulfuric acid, the helmet that ended the fucking world and SPIDERDORF. I can't say anything else on the subject, other than it's still the greatest game in the history of mankind, and now packaged in a manner that even *YOU* can play. Imma wait for the new classic version to be released (because I don't do graphics, bitches) and then... well, DN-DF2023 will surely become a thing. It is inevitable.

I saw ads for this a few days ago, but I was concerned that a casual-friendly port would involve hacking it up to pieces. Good to hear its got your approval.

I've got a basic fort up and running, probably about ten hours in. The new version is good, but not quite perfect.
1) Graphics. I was always concerned about these. I know aesthetics are entirely subjective, but I just think the graphics are fucking amateur hour post-weeb rpg bullshit. Zoomed out (vital for getting a decent fort overview), nothing reads well - elves, dorfs, humans, they all look too similar. No silhouette identification, no colour coding, nada.
2) Hotkeys are all fucked. I knew this would be a thing, but it's still RAEG inducing and means that I'm taking twice as long to get anything done. Mouse support isn't quite there yet either - it works 99% of the time, but inputs occasionally lag. Game lacks a "select all" ctrl / alt click, which is a borderline unforgiveable oversight. Hope you like clicking 100 times per trade session.
3) Wildlife aggression is now keyed to how destructive the dorfs are to their environment. Which - while hilariously awesome - means the early game meta of a) move in, b) cut down every tree in a 5 kilometer radius, c) profit will most likely result in elephants raping you to death in the middle of your own dining room. I approve of this change.
4) Kitfox bought the wiki, and are disallowing information to be posted until server migration (or some shit) is complete. Unforgivable retardation - this game needs an up to date wiki in order to be even vaguely functional. Why not have it done before launch? After all, you fucking blue-haired parasitic retards just made a million fucking dollars for practically zero effort on your side. LOL NOPE JOIN OUR DISCORD AND WE'LL GET THE JANNIES TO DO IT FOR FREE ALSO YOU'RE BANNED FROM OUR DISCORD SHITLORD
5) Kitfox again. Fucking worst indie publisher, which is no small feat. Zero technical competence, they see their job as publisher to encompass "community engagement" and fuck all else as far as I can tell. So they run a discord and ban people for laughing at DF warcrimes, and that's about it. They are also gatekeeping modding information HARD - because they know as soon as that info is out there, DF Auschwitz is only a day away on the steam workshop / some massive autist will make a graphics & sound replacement that unfucks all their fuckery and renders their entire sheckle-mine redundant. Fuck you Shitfox, if I want to Mod the Gay Away then I fucking *will*.
6) No DFhack (yet - see Massive Autist above for details). Bugs can no longer be squashed from the terminal, which is a huge deal when running a hundred-year perma-death simulation.

The last time I saw Tom a couple of decades ago he was just trying to catch Jerry. Never expected I'd see him asking questions on the internet.

I wonder if zombie sponges are still the most dangerous enemy in the game.

Tricky, because they've not exactly been... forthcoming with the changelogs.
What I do know is the following: yes, Tarn did say there were going to be troon dwarfs in DF. There are already gay dwarfs. HOWEVER...
We're dealing with a simulation here: you can add a tag that says XY fancies XY (instead of XX), but because of the way systems are interconnected in DF, there is always the possibility of UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES. In the case of gay dwarfs (a much lower % of the fortress population), this means that they struggle to form romantic bonds - the need that a gay dwarf has to "be with family" cannot be fulfilled, especially in an early age world-gen, meaning that gay dwarfs tend to be fucking miserable tantrumming little shits unless you micro-manage all their other bullshit.
Which is pretty close to the fucking knuckle (or Working as Intended).
Second, I remember when the usual suspects were pushing for troon dwarfs (troofs?) and there was an article written and put up called The Fortress is For Everyone, co-authored by Zach Adams' new wife. It was the usual "FUCKING BIGOTS REEEE" feminist frequency bullshit, and caused a bit of a stink at the time.
Everyone else seems to have forgotten - the brothers Adams certainly did, because they made a big Hoo Haa about how they were getting their new UI play-tested by a total 100% n00b who had never played the game before to see if the UI worked for idiots. And, lo and behold, the playtester was... *drumroll* Zach's fucking wife.
So once again, bitches are writing articles about a game they have never fucking played, whilst lecturing the men who do. Some things never fucking change in this putrid swamp of an industry.

Wow this is amazing After 16 years of freeware, Dwarf Fortress creators get their $7M payday" The month before Dwarf Fortress was released on Steam (and Itch.io), the brothers Zach and Tarn Adams made $15,635 in revenue, mostly from donations for their 16-year freeware project. The month after the game's commercial debut, they made $7,230,123, or 462 times that amount."
