I like playing Doom in bed on my laptop. That's highly inconvenient with a mouse and not a lot less so with a modern (buttonless) touchpad. Therefore the only solution is to play with the keyboard, 90s style. However I can't seem to get a good configuration right.
As I know there's a few keyboarders on here, what's a nice scheme? Should I bind A/D to strafe or turn? Etc

I found it pretty easy to get used to a touchpad/keyboard laptop combination. It's never going to be as good as mouse/keyboard, but it's at least playable.
Right thumb on touchpad wsad movement, left caps for fire, e for use
If your thumb gets tired you can swap:
Left thumb on touchpad ikjl movement, ; fire, o for use

dmdr Holy SHIT that's good. I also bound I to jump because I'm one of those people. I ended up sticking to WASD though, because ESDF makes it hard to reach the shift key for running. Yes I'm ALSO one of those people that don't use autorun. JadingTsunami that's very interesting. I never thought about not using the touchpad to shoot at all! I'll give it a shot.

I just use the arrow keys for movement, CTRL for fire, space for use, ALT for strafe, SHIFT for run, TAB for automap. I never use autorun, I just prefer to hold down SHIFT, feels weird to do otherwise.

I dunno dude. I'm not having a problem to play doom with a mouse while lying. I can play with both touchpad and mouse. And I'm killing it.

matadorYeah, I also got used to the crappy default config (using Alt to strafe). But dmdr configuration looks very nice with great potential. I would remap X and V to something else, though, because to me that would be awkward. I ended up sticking to WASD though, because ESDF makes it hard to reach the shift key for running. Do you have one of those atrocious ISO layout keyboard with a tiny Left Shift?

v and x are actually not awkward at all, it's easier to curl your fingers than stretch them
I would recommend getting used to autorun. I used to do the hold-shift thing too but it's not that comfy for longer sessions and makes weapon switching unnecessarily hard

A & D for strafing Up & Down Arrows for moving fwd/bwkd Crtl to shoot Space to use.
My mouse has been abused and is too fucked to be used on my shitty gaming laptop for main doom

v and x are actually not awkward at all, it's easier to curl your fingers than stretch them I guess I could get used to that. Except maybe in that configuration Z would be easier for me than X, cause I could use the pinky, I guess. Or I could have them both mapped.

Oh cool I love these. I'm an arrow key user. Arrow up = Forward Arrow Down = Back Arrow Left = Strafe Left Arrow Right = Strafe Right KP1 = Ability 1 (Wrath of Chronos) or Reload (MM8BDM CCBM mod)
KP2 = Ability 2 (Wrath of Chronos) KP3 = Ability 3 (Wrath of Chronos) KP4 = Weapon slot 5 KP5 = Weapon slot 3 KP6 = Weapon slot 7 End = Menu (Wrath of Chronos)
Enter = Use All Items Left CTRL = Jump Shift = Use W = FlyUp
A = Strafe Left D = Strafe Right S = Flydown F = Use
Mouse 1 = Fire Mouse 2 = Altfire Mouse 3 = Move Forward Scroll Wheel = obvious [ = Next Item
] = Previous Item
All depends on the mods I play but this is it generally

i was using numpad to move, KP1 and KP3 to strafe. LCTRL to fire, R to run. just put your left palm so that your middle finger is over R, and then you can press LCTRL by the bottom left part of your palm (that's how i'm still pressing LCTRL, it's… handy). also, numbers to switch weapons are easily accessible too. mostly, you don't have to move your left hand much.
i did both Doom, Doom2, Evilution and Plutonia with this setup. added KP/ and KP0 to look up and down, and i did both Quake and Quake2 with this too (yes, i first completed both quakes without a mouse). with some more additions i completed Descent, keyboard-only too.
p.s.: yes, you need a proper keyboard for this, not those new flat notebook-like crap. it's not possible to press LCTRL there as described.

I'm a retired keyboarder now due to the amount of stress that playing kb-only put in my hands, giving me some nasty hand pain afterwards; but back then my config was the usual WASD combo, SPACE to open and the IJKL keys( 'I' for shooting, 'J & L' for turning and 'K' for 180º turn).

Oh nice I should make my 'up arrow' into a 180º turn button. 'Down arrow' could be crouch if not the same.

If I need to use one hand to scratch an itch or wave a fly off my monitor; my control scheme turns from keyboard + mouse to mouse only :
Moving the mouse = Turning Left button = Fire Press middle button = Strafelook (strafing left or right by turning with the mouse while holding the button) Scroll middle button = Weapon switch Right button = Forward Double right button tap = Use Sideways mouse button = Backwards Sideways mouse button No.2 = Unused

When I used to play keyboard long ago, it was the typical configuration, right Alt for Strafe, Shift for run, Ctrl shoot, Space use.
Specifically though I would prefer the numeric pad for arrows (that's of course not convenient in may laptops). The same reason that for modern FPS I use WAXD instead of WASD. People find this weird but it evolved organically, and I realized when I have my fingers weighted equally on a cross I can more easily make the player dance around. Regular WASD or arrows are too small to not stumble upon. But it's organically, when I started preffering this configuration, I realized it must be the reason when I tried to switch back. People find weird my preference for inverted mouse too.
Anyway, so NUM 2468 for movement,. Alt,Shift,Ctrl on the right side and Space like the original, and I improved a bit with NUM 7 and 1 to switch between next/previous weapon. When I was playing ZDoom years ago, if I needed to jump, I think NUM0 was jump and the one on the right (like a dot here) was crouch.
But anyway, keyboard topology changes, now there are windows keys around. Also, the original might have been awkward, Space was far and you were hitting the right side (I might have keyboard where the right side of space has dived in after too much playing). And I did use then 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 for weapons even if they were far, but I managed, my left hand would raise and hit it, then back. I don't know, it seems awkward now.

Anyway, so NUM 2468 for movement Ah, another someone who prefers numeric pad over the stupid arrow keys.

I just play with keyboard just like I have for years.
I use the arrow keys to move back/forward and to turn left and right, Alt for strafe toggle ctrl for fire spacebar for use the number keys for my weapons.

Le bumperino trololol I randomly remembered this interesing post: I found it pretty easy to get used to a touchpad/keyboard laptop combination. When I tried it last year the touchpad was weirdly laggy. If I would raise my finger off the touchpad then put it back, it wouldn't respond to my movements for like half a second. In day-to-day usage that's probably useful, but it was impossible to play doom that way, so I just figured lenovo makes weird touchpads and used dmdr's control scheme (which I still use). Well, it turns out that little lag can be disabled by setting your touchpad to max sensitivity in windows touchpad settings: docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/component-guidelines/touchpad-tuning-guidelines#accidental-activation-preventionAfter doing this, indeed the touchpad is now always responsive and one can play Doom as per JadingTsunami's post. Posting this here in case it's useful to someone else (and before I forget)

That's good advice. I must say touchpads did get better in the last decade and I hate them less than I used to.
