I still haven't won at Rogue yet. Found the amulet of Yendor once, but never made it back out. You kinda have to get lucky with the RNG in this game in order to get anywhere. Maybe some other versions are easier. I've only played the one that comes in the bsdgames package (bsdgames-nonfree in Debian or derived distros).

If I were to judge difficulty in terms of my skill level at the time I played something I would probably have to say dungeons of daggorath for the old trs-80. It was the first game I played when I was around five so it kicked my ass. Probably seconded by one of the few nes games I had when I was a bit older, ghosts n goblins.

Not sure if it's the absolute hardest but off the top of my head, "Haunted Castle" (the arcade Castlevania game) stands out as being particularly hard. That fucking piece of shit is everything but a Castlevania. I hate so much that game |

Nethack isn't so much difficult. It just requires an encyclopedic knowledge of the game, and the thousand and one ways it will fucking kill you. It's a memory test of possible interactions.

Man, I still remember running a nudist Valkyrie and putting my ascension kit in a bag of holding inside another bag of holding by accident... I think I would have preferred if the game has just straight up fucking murdered me, but NO, you get to wander around the end-game wallowing in rage and despair because of your own fucking stupidity instead. 10/10, top kek devteam.

Abadox for NES/Famicom is one of them. Regardless of what version of the game it is, the game is at least moderately difficult. The Furthest I got was halfway through the 2nd level.
Battlefield 3 and NES/Famicom Burai Fighter are pretty hard for me too.
Most pre-5th gen Castlevanias are also in this category.
