Here's the thing that made me take this shit seriously: fucking China shut down their infrastructure. Must be bad, China won't even shut down a fucking train if there are 20 school kids on the fucking tracks.
I think the people high up are (rightly) terrified of this fucking virus because it moves between species and mutates like a motherfucker. Every person / bat / dog it infects = another generation of virusy goodness = another roll of the mutation dice. If it rolls a natural 20, it becomes airborn aids and everyone dies.

I'm starting to feel kinda sickly but not in an infected way. My breathing is fine, I dont have any symptoms but ive already been working from home for about a year before this started.
I'm trying to stay away from the media since, as Kontra Kommando rightly pointed out, is completely inept and unreliable here. In general, theres a lot of bad news about how poorly our country, and my state in particular is responding to this and how much worse its going to get. Ive gotten some really strange messages from people organizing direct action, general strikes, and protests. I also got a message from a stranger last night, an older doomer who wanted to thank me for the maps ive made -- he wanted to make sure every one of his favorite mappers how much he enjoyed them "before he goes." This is really surreal.
I'm getting a little stir crazy. I dont normally get anxious or panicky but it is really starting to break me. My local area in particular has been really slow about releasing its inmates even with multiple known covid19 tests positive behind bars. We have a large abandoned hospital with a wealthy owner who is drastically countering negotiations to sublet the building for covid19 patients. We also have hundreds of thousands of detained immigrants who were already short of food, clothes, medical and hygiene supplies long before this pandemic started. If they get wiped out, this is some pretty serious adolf hitler level warcrime shit.
My diets changed. My wife and I shop pretty regularly for fresh produce but since were trying to avoid people and grocery stores weve had to stock up on a lot of salty/sugary non perishable garbage. And when your home all day every day with nothing to do and surrounded by negative energy, how are you supposed to not overeat? I know the point of having it is to save it but this whole disaster is making a lot of entertainmemt unenjoyable, and the down time in between meals drag on forever.
Julie is a hairdresser and as such, she is out of work until further notice. Shes the type of person who needs to keep herself busy. Shes quickly burned through all of her favorite TV shows. We started a home improvement project but theres only so much of it you can do at at time without wearing yourself out. Were running out of stuff to do together and were both feeling notably irritable. Sometimes we kinda snap at each other. I love Julie, its not her. We have to quickly remind each other that the quarantine is making us crazy and give each other space, but she doesnt work well alone without enough to do, so this is a bad mix in these types of circumstances.
I can make maps all day if I want to, and channeling this negativity into creative output does seem to be working, but I do get stiff from sitting at a desk for too long, and I do often feel like I gotta do something else to escape.
This is just all really bad. I really hope things get better soon for everyone's sake

Dr. Fauci yesterday said that U.S. Deaths from Coronavirus could top 100,000. time.com/5812149/fauci-coronavirus-deaths-100000/
This is down from other projects proposed by other researchers, who suggested 200,000 a few days ago:
However, this a far cry from the original imperial model's 2.2 million deaths proposed by Dr. Neil Ferguson, who has since had to modify it to reflect reality.
By the time this is over, I bet the death rate will be less than 100,000.

I'll just leave a blanket statement here saying I decry science denial. If you deny the science on this topic, you're a dumbass. Sorry if that indisputable fact hurts anyone. Before you condemn people for denying the science, which I think everyone agrees would be detrimental, also consider that even the best scientists are still learning about this new strain and the studies available aren't conclusive yet. Furthermore, tanking the economy will also indirectly lead to many deaths, so most reasonable experts agree that it would be best to find a balance between social distancing and continuing to let business and capitalism function.

A childhood friend's father passed away last night from this stupid virus. I feel terrible for his family, he was a really nice man. I'm not certain, but I believe he had some previous health conditions. However, it happened very quickly. He was denied access to the first hospital they went to, because there wasn't enough beds to take him. Had they taken him, perhaps he could have had a chance.

Julie got denied unemployment benefits because she spent most of the year in beauty school instead of working. In the eyes of the government, because she survived on my income and what little savings we had so that she could graduate, we can do it again.
I still have a job but we have barely any work coming in so idk what's gonna happen.

Sorry about your friend KK and hang in there 40, I don't envy you Americans at all in this situation. America will almost definitely suffer the most from this, and I can easily imagine big changes in your country happening as soon as all this ends (perhaps even proper healthcare?).
Can't lie though, it's nice to see America struggle for once instead of making others struggle xd

Thanks Xeep,
Americans alway struggle, it seems, however.
I just found out from my boss, that another person that I knew professionally, died from the virus.
IMO, the utmost importance going forward is the ability to produce medical supplies, domestically, and not have to rely on foreign manufacturing. I think it is pathetic, that they are able to give most people $1,200 each, yet they can't even produce fucking masks, gloves, and beds!?

I live, shit's wore off and now I can go back to breathing like a human, theres some nose stuff lingering but over than the occasional lump of bogie I'm good.
Which is unpleasant but warmly accepted given the alternative of not breathing.

Furthermore, tanking the economy will also indirectly lead to many deaths, so most reasonable experts agree that it would be best to find a balance between social distancing and continuing to let business and capitalism function. I do agree with this, but I think the measures taken have been sadly far too little far too late, which led to America becoming the new epicenter of coronavirus. Prioritizing the economy so strongly over the advisement of health officials is partly what led us down this road.
With the amount of deaths attributed to this thing, be them direct or indirect - if it had a turban on we'd be looking for it's homeland so we could bomb it. That's all I'm getting at here. Yet, so many right-wing media outlets were flat out calling this a "hoax" for months until that position became so blatantly retarded as to be clearly untenable.
I'll grant that many ostensibly left-leaning media outlets are using this as an excuse to fear monger, but that's basically 90% of the function of the news these days regardless of the "stated" political positions of each media outlet, so it's business as usual. It's the same from all sides anyway, one side is just fear mongering about the other side's fear mongering now.
Literally no one has their focus where they should have it and everyone's brains are being turned to mush by corporate media that serves not to inform but to distract. But hey, this just shows that at least some institutions have remained status quo for the most part in the wake of this pandemic!
Subtracting the spin from all the shit I've been hearing has been a doozy. Needless to say, dn was spot on when he said that even China taking this seriously shows just how serious it really is. We should learn from their mistakes, not repeat them.

That means the fucking party is over; time to go back to work. This is another fucking strain of virulent death that floats around thanks to our destitute Asian friends who will eat anything that fits in a stew pot. We all have to wait for a vaccine, and while we are waiting, we go back to fucking work. Our ancestors faced much worse shit than this and didn't hide in their hovels like pussies, despite having no medicine or twitter at all. Hey King John, sorry Colombus can't sail today, he doesn't want the Indians to catch smallpox. Fuck it, well set up the new world on Saint Martin, at least no one has a cold there.

Yeah, and why are people getting reinfected?
Because, as previously stated, this thing *mutates like a motherfucker*. The more people infected, the higher the rate of mutation, the more strains of virus enter the virus-sphere.
We have ONE FUCKING CHANCE at this vaccine shit: a vaccine will work for ONE STRAIN ONLY. We can develop that, but we can't develop vaccines for the HUNDRED THOUSAND STRAINS OF AIR-AIDS that will come about if we say Fuck It and wander around spreading this thing.
Of course, it's all for shit if the virus gets into a bat-cave in South America: that will be hilarious.

My mom is an essential worker whos now one of the people in the front line. She works in an elderly care facility that as of Friday has 5 new corona cases. She was telling me that, like most of our hospitals, they are critically low on PPE. Employees have to bring their own masks from home. And the section of the building thats taped off for quarantine only has one thin plastic hazard suit they have to share! She says theres not really a way to tell if the last person to use it turned it inside out. The nurses worked together to develop their own makeshift suits out of disposable hospital gowns and taking measures into their own hands against corporate instructions.
I'm 'lucky' enough to have already had a job where I work from home for a small company so ive been safe and working, although it does feel icky to still be doing market research for huge clients while the rest of the economy is plummeting. Its also really gross how often I'm getting advertisements from shit companies like citizen's bank, kay jewelers, and charmin toilet paper telling me "theyre there for me" during this pandemic.
So fucking gross.

I think people don't get reinfected, just they didn't heal fully and the disease came back. I'm not a virologist but this seems very much like a possibility

The Chinese numbers are extremely suspect. My theory is that if they were able to test hypothetically 100% of the population, of each country for the virus, or the antibodies, they would find that the vast majority probably has it, or has had it. In that case, the death rate would be extremely small, like 0.1% relative to the amount of people exposed. If this started in Wuhan in November, and the world went on as it did, until we got serious about this in the March, the number of infected has to be sky-high. Much more than what is already verified. They're not testing everyone, who likely has its, just a subset that meet the most obvious symptoms. This is due to a lack of resources. Thus, I think allocating the data is important. Then at least we could act accordingly. If it is true that it is a negligible death rate, than we should open up the economy with confidence.

It's pretty obvious what they are doing. They are lying and keeping quiet to offload the blame on America. I'm not sure the virus was intentional because a virus is a pretty bad bioweapon due to how uncontrollable it is but I have a hunch they used the situation to their advantage to do some damage to the west. They have extremely draconian surveillance apparatuses and put muslims in death camps so it's not like they care about human rights, they're communists after all. So if 1 million of their people die due to the virus but 20 million Americans die, it's a win for them. No way in hell a country of 1.3 billion people, where the virus originated and was even covered up, has less cases than Italy and Spain combined.

I completely agree, the Chinese government is certainly vastly under-reporting the data. This is why totalitarian governments are a shitty system, because there is no accountability. I recall seeing news reports of buildings in China housing people sick with Covid-19, "collapsing". If they did somehow achieve those numbers, it must have been through secretly mass-murdering people who were infected.

I die a little every time I hear a TV advertisement say "in these uncertain times" and "we're here for you" or talking about how their employees that theyre making work are heroes.
