Some people don't see the appeal of anime (yet). What would you show them to possibly convince them that Japanese animation deserves their attention?
I guess you would want it to meet the following requirements:
- no sexualization, cute little girls, or perversion in general
- no culturally specific aspects that require some knowledge about Japan - not too long so that there is a chance they will actually finish it - not too childish/juvenile, you don't want them to feel like it's a cartoon for kids
It's your move. Keep in mind that you might have only one attempt before you scare them away for life, so choose carefully!

I’ll be the token normie here: take memfis’ challenge and impress me. Post a video preferably 10 minutes or less and I’ll watch it tomorrow. As memfy says you have one chance.

Your requirements made me think of Cowboy Bebop.

Your requirements made me think of Cowboy Bebop. I second this. Never watched the show sans for like a episode or two but if my brother who doesn't like anime watched it completely then I stand behind this one. Also, "Fist of the North Star". It's old, guaranteed gold. Manliness, blood and tears, morale and honour, stuff like that, great stuff.

@glenzinho I'm not sure about ten minute episodes since all the best anime have 20 minute episodes... when they're set in a fantasy sci fi setting the first episode is often spent world building and setting the stage for what's to come. But here's a great anime that pulls most people that claim to hate anime into anime and makes them change their mind... after the world building is done things become really wild. It's very brutal, has an oppressive atmosphere, plays on your heart strings, makes you care for the characters and makes sure you don't take them for granted.

The Gunsmith Cats OVA as it is only 3 episodes long (so it'll only take a little over an hour to watch it all), takes place in America, has a great English dub, and is upbeat and entertaining so it'd be nice to watch with a hamburger and your weapon of choice. I love it, s'great. I sold someone before on Cowboy Bebop with the opening scene from the movie:

I will name some shorts that I believe can be enjoyed by just about anyone. They are quite different in style from what most people think of when they hear the term "anime", so you could say I'm cheating, but whatever. Memory (5 minutes) - about the weird ways in which human memory works. Funny. Out of Sight (5 minutes) - don't want to spoil anything, just watch it. Colorful and touching. Aquatic Language (9 minutes) - to be honest I don't remember this one too well, but I think it was a cool short about human language. Make sure to enable subtitles. Glassy Ocean (23 minutes) - musings on how we perceive time. Nicely surreal.

I tried, anime dudes, but I can't get into it. I watched the second of memfis' short clips and half of deathevo's recommendation. Try another normie.

You guys were supposed to give recommendations in English! Most folk who first saw anime on television heard them in English! You can't expect the family to sit down together and just read subtitles! Cool stuff though Memfis I've seen the memory one and the Out of Sight one of the artsy stuff so far. I'd also toss in a recommendation for BERSERK!!! Not only does this MANime come in glorious English, but the opening song is also in English! Episode 1: People say to skip the first episode and actually watch it last but I personally get hyped about it. Episode 2:
This is one of my favorite parts in Berserk (Episode 6) and all of y'all need to see this: PUT YOUR GRASSES ON SLAY DEMONS BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! I'd also toss in Redline as possibly normie-friendly! POPCORN ZOOOOOOM RACING SPACE CARS BWOOSSSHH!!

I don't mind it not being english, I watch plenty of shows/films in other languages. I generally don't like the art style nor the animation style. It would have to have a really fucken good story or hook to get me intrigued. Maybe I'll check out the Berserk video you linked Sarge.

I almost always choose to watch in English dub if I can. One argument I can give to support that is that I'd rather keep my eyes on the art displayed than keeping them at the bottom to read. Plus I can just listen if I'm multitasking so I don't really miss any dialogue.
Also yeah for me there are some artstyles that I can't stand looking at and refuse to watch a show because of it. The only show I can think of like that off the top of my head is K-ON! which is girly girls playing musical instruments and hanging out so I don't think I'm missing anything anyway. There's something off about their faces and it irks me. The eyebrows, eyes, and mouth... eek.

I myself always choose subs. I grew up, and as many as my countrymen, watching subbed movies on the TV, it's actually quite easy to follow the screen and read off subs once you learn, it's like in games, you are focused on the crosshair but you can always speedingly read off info from the HUD at sides. (Which makes my head spin whenever there is a option to bring the HUD closer to the crosshair tho)
I don't discriminate art-styles, I mostly discriminate settings. Edgy, dark and gorey? Might pass it unless it's done for a joke. Overly sexualized? Again, probably will pass it unless it's a parody.
If there is anything I would choose for a "normie" it has to be something old and classic that doesn't rely on favouriting the "hardcore" fans. Even if I myself started off with a newer series that did exactly that.

Cowboy Bebop is the only anime I can think of that you can give to pretty much everyone (who isn't a teenager anymore) and expect them to like it. Any other anime that you can hand a normie might have to be tailored towards their personality. Maybe if someone likes science fiction, thriller films, and a taste of conspiracy theories then you could hand them Steins;Gate. I figured most of us here would like Berserk since we all like Doom which has demons and blood stuffs. TOS might like Berserk or even Gunsmith Cats hehe 8-).

Whoever finds me an anime that I like enough to binge watch can have my bank account information. I am that certain it won't happen.
I watched Hellsing once. I enjoyed it, but not enough to go out of my way to watch it again, and I enjoyed the abridged version more.

The only anime films I've seen that catered well to "normal people" would be Fist of the North Star and Ninja Scroll.

I'm certainly not an anime person, but I'd say that I found these full-length movies very good:
Ghost in the Shell (the original 1995 version)
Akira (1998)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)
They came out before anime became too popular and thus became shit, just like what happened with movies and computer games.
Make sure to watch them with Japanese speech and english subtitles. The american(?) voice actors suck tremendously, at least to my ears.

I found Terror in Resonance on Netflix to be remarkably "normal" for my tastes, despite being an anime. It's more of a political thriller than anything else, although it falls into the usual anime trap of having the main characters with agency be late school age.
To be honest, with the cultural embrace of comic books and the like, anime is looking less weird. It's just the strangely Japanese things, like having unbearably annoying female side characters and a fascination with school kids that makes it difficult to not roll eyes at. I've watched a fair few short series now and generally found them enjoyable. However, this is predominantly due to strong settings and well animated action sequences, rather than anything the characters are doing for me. Although when a character is deliberately OTT badass they can be a lot of fun.

Hmm.. Spirited Away, maybe? Not sure if this one counts, but I liked it so much and I'd recommend it to anyone.

I just want to pop in again to say that I love Berserk (1997) and that I hope at least one of you decides to watch the anime if you haven't already.
Yeah I agree Spirited Away works! Fantastic Ghibli film indeedy and the only one I've seen aside from Howl's Moving Castle lol.

Fist of the North Star would probably be a good recommendation, it's the closest thing to "normal" that comes to my mind right now.

Nooooooooooooooooo you should watch K-On!, shame that you don't like the "moe artstyle". Yeah it's a "cute girls doing cute stuff show" and I was unsure because it's regarded like one of the best things ever, and after I watched it I understood that indeed it's one of the best things ever. For me a show that I was unsure of because of its artstyle it's Kaiji. It looked weird at first but the style grew on me and it was very effective on the more dramatic moments, I have to watch the second season soon.
Maybe if someone likes science fiction, thriller films, and a taste of conspiracy theories then you could hand them Steins;Gate.
Steins;Gate is pretty cool but I guess that various references to otaku culture will look weird if you are new to anime.

I'll check that out once home Deathevo, I'm open to new stuff!
The only anime stuff I've enjoyed thoroughly: Dragon ball (especially pre-DBZ), One Punch Man, Evangelion and Akira. All fine pieces of entertainment, Imo. I don't think it counts, but The Boondocks (which is animated by an Asian guy) is also funny.
