Had to bump this, because I have an advice for people who are very new to anime and are looking to watch some.
There's a very popular and cult-classic show that you've probably heard - Neon Genesis Evangelion. Honest advice: don't watch it. It starts out pretty cool and innocent, but by the end it turns into a massive depression-filled insanity. The ending is virtually incomprehensible. I nearly got an existential crisis after watching it.
So, yeah, I don't recommend it, save your sanity. The characters are really adorable, though.

Yeah, advices about anime from someone who doesn't even watch anime are useful. Anyway...
Okay.
That's right, it was intended and it's a good thing.
Nope.
That's prefectly fine and you should worry about yourself if it happens otherwise.
Okay, maybe you are going to a good start actually. Just wait some time and watch another series, then you won't realize it but soon you'll reach the point of no return. Y-youkoso!

Yeah, that's right! Heil grammatik! Yeah, I'm relatively new to anime. Also, it wasn't really an advice, it was more a warning that this show is really damn weird and may traumatize you, and you shouldn't make my mistake of watching it without knowing what's it about. Ah, or maybe I'm just sensetive..

Well good thing I'm not that sensitive I guess (or maybe not at all. Some people asked me if I'm able to feel anything in the past, and I surely work backwards in many respects). But nah I just felt like a grammar nazi once in life. Btw I'm well aware I should not be the one correcting people since my english is most likely worse than that of most members of this forum. But I've been feeling good lately (been a long, long time since I last felt that way, feeling empty inside is usually a constant), so I figured I'd have some fun, so if I manage to piss someone in the process, know that these moments are usually very, very rare. I for one am not new to anime but I haven't watched a fuckload of series either, my Plan to Watch list is getting bigger and bigger by the day, I'm leaving the long stuff at the end. To manga however, I am new, the only manga I'd ever read was Hellsing, though there was no point since the Ultimate OVA series animates it in its entirety. I should ask a friend to come here, he could probably recommend plenty of stuff to watch since the last time I asked him he watched over 220 series .

I should not be the one correcting people since my english is most likely worse Of course, you even spelled English with a lower-case letter. How dare you insult the language? Just kidding, heh.

Mea culpa, how dare I insult this language?! Such insolence must be punished! But seriously, I'm usually just too lazy to spell languages with a capital letter. Of course, I avoid doing this when I should.

english... come at me bros! In Portuguese it is portugues, no big deal. The english have a perverted sense of righteousness when it comes to their bastardised nonsensical language, so please by all my means take every opportunity you can to cunt them by spelling it with a small e.

Hey now, Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of my favorites! I enjoyed that process of death, rebirth, angel mind probing and what have you. :'(

I've enjoyed it, too, actually. But the last, say, 3-4 episodes basically destroyed the entire plot the show had until that point and what happened in the end I can't even describe. I prefer it when the ending reveales everything, not the opposite!

Well you're in luck because there's a movie called The End of Evangelion!

I've already heard it doesn't really reveal anything and is as much mind screw.

Hm, Evangelion was my third anime (first was Chobits, second was Elfen Lied). I guess it can be an odd choice for a beginner, if anything simply because it revolutionized the mecha genre in ways you can't really appreciate unless you've seen some older giant robot shows. The strong psychological aspect it added to the story was incredibly influential and spawned countless imitators (see Brain Powerd, Argento Soma, RahXephon, and many many others).
But it's absolutely not necessary to know any of this historical stuff in order to appreciate just how deep Evangelion is, so maybe I would recommend it to beginners actually. Yes, it will hurt your soul but you will overcome it, become a better person in the process, and potentially gain deeper appreciation of the medium. It's certainly one of the very very best anime series of all time. I've seen it three times already and I can easily imagine this number doubling in the future.
Anyway, opinions from newcomers are probably the most interesting part of this thread, so please keep them coming!

Don't know why I didn't mention it the first time around, but I think the Monogatari series would be a very good recommendation for someone new to anime.

since i am a non anime person, i enjoyed the Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, Ghost In The Shell, Tokyo Ghoul, Ajin, Akame Ga Kill, and Attack On Titan. i've seen all of neon genesis evangelion, thought it was pretty meh but would've enjoyed it when i was 8, watched all of Cowboy Bebop thought it was lame, i started psycho pass but got bored by episode 3, and tried death note got bored by episode 14, tried Sword Art Online watched all of season 1 and half of season 2 thought it was total garbage, saw deadman wonderland and was not impressed at all, watched steins gate thought it was boring. oh yeah and used to watch dragonball z, pokemon, and sailor moon on tv as a kid in the 90s. (edit: found my anime planet page, cause i wanted to find more anime a few years ago but since i'm not an anime person it just went by the wayside www.anime-planet.com/users/mastema/anime
kinda interested in Parasyte and Shiki, and that new one Pet.

mmh, tough one, I must say that I feel like I'm being trolled in some parts anyway try these: Mirai Nikki, Black Lagoon, Elfen Lied, Hellsing Ultimate, Gokukoku no Brynhildr. Shiki is a good one but I can't be sure you'll like it, it seems you like more straightforward action and less the convulted mind games and verbose parts.

no you're not being trolled. i have seen a lot of anime but i despise the culture surrounding it and do not consider myself an anime person. just like i listen to a lot of metal but despise the culture surrounding it and do not consider myself a metal person. i'll try those, cheers
i do prefer a solid mix of the action and the philosophizing, something shows like neon genesis evangelion weren't able to balance out in my opinion. it was all a cupcake at the end of each episode and then a big philosophical pie at the end of the series

Robotech (first generation) was a translated version of Super Dimensional Fotress Macross: my first taste of anime. At the time it amazed me because I had never seen cartoons were some of the main characters die. Still get a bit of a lump in my throat when I remember. Watched it years later with my daughters and they loved it too
And of course I have to recommend Ghost In the Shell(1995), loved that movie. Also the TV series Ghost In the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 1st and 2nd GIG is great too.
And in no way do I consider myself an anime fan, so these should be good for normies I reckon.

ok I've got one too (not Urotsukidoji [sic] as I have been tempted to post in this thread several times) " The Promised Neverland" I thought this was great! The concept is a bit anime -- a bunch of kids in an orphanage find out that they're actually being fattened up to be fed to demons and have to escape -- but other than that this is pretty normal person friendly: no over-the-top violence or upskirt shots or annoying 'cute' characters, and most importantly, IT SUSTAINS IT'S PACE THROUGHOUT THE SEASON!!!!!!! One of the big obstacles (other than the weird sex stuff) to widespread anime adoption is the willingness to get distracted by overwrought emotional twaddle, but this is laser focused on the attempt to escape and the kid's attempts to outsmart their overseer. It even has a satisfying series ending with very few unresolved plotlines! Actually despite the horror setup this is more like an old sci-fi thriller, with the dystopian setting and smart people trying to trick each other plot. Lots of thriller-style cliffhanger episode endings too. Sure, the kids are much more together and organised than they really should be, being like 11 years old at the oldest, but fuck it there's demons so strict realism is kinda optional. Next season's coming out in January iirc, please please don't fuck it up.

The name of this anime caught my attention but then I was turned off upon learning it was about a bunch of kids and thinking about how I don't want to listen to any of them crying. Now I have to give it a shot and watch it which is totally welcome! Thanks for the enlightenment!
