Human connection and real communication is a thing of the past. Nobody calls people anymore. Nobody approaches anybody. I called a friend the other day...their response, "Dude, why don't you just text me? You're the only friend that actually calls." Wait...seriously? You're the only friend that actually calls. You're the only friend that actually calls. You're the only friend that actually calls. You're the only friend that actually calls.
What the fuck?!Are people so incapable of emotional expression anymore that even the fucking idea of communicating with spoken words doesn't make sense anymore? As if your own voice has been rendered obsolete because people have been programmed into this state of evolutionary stasis? Why should humanity move forward when we can just create a machine to make tomorrow better for us? And there's no escaping it. Every day at work I hear it, too. This actually happened. Them: "Hey, I need you to go check on something for me." Me: "Sure, what's up?" Them: "Uh...I'll send you an email in a few minutes." You really couldn't just tell me what you wanted me to check out? You know what was in that email? There was a part of the property that sustained some damage over the weekend and I was asked to check the security cameras to find out what caused the damage. WHAT THEFUCK?!Want to pay your bills?! LOG ON.
Want to do your schoolwork?! LOG ON. WANT TO GET A QUESTION ANSWERED?! LOG THE FUCK ON. I want to see the day where technology fails. I want to see the look on everybody's faces when they realize that they will be forced to actually smile at somebody instead of just texting them " ". Oh how I would relish the moment when people lose their fucking minds at the thought of having to communicate with people in person. This likely won't happen in my lifetime...but a man can dream. The irony of this whole rant is that I had to fucking log on to share it with people right now.

This is something I struggle with every day to be honest. I think there are a lot more people than you might imagine who feel the same way.

My internal irony meter blew up when I read that last line. It was time to get another one anyways... Either way, can relate, but also relate to the other side of the argument. I mean, nothing beats the good ole face-to-face, I have to admit. It is still extremely weird for me to communicate over text and half the time I wish the websites I was going in were just rooms with two three people so I can say "Hey what's up?" or something like that. For example, this forum, Doomworld... Actually I keep flopping at making text conversations, while with writing regular stuff I have no problem with, as soon as I wanna write a reply I just start making these mistakes and can't stop, and yall will see these errors as you read on (notice the abudance of "and stuff" and/or "things" things). So yeah, upclose and personal is cool. Other issue is you can never tell if someone is sarcastic or not over text, does it mean it or not. And people use this to their advantage. Say something stupid? Just say later that you were "pranking" and/or "trolling" and people might believe you or just side with you because being trolled is a bad thing and "skipping such a obvious troll is only for stupid people", like, the fuck? Every fucking comment section is a battlefield of this and that, cavalry charging and stealthy backstabbing. People just wander on online to release their inner beast while forgetting to be human. No wonder there are so many depressos around these days. Yeah, you were talking about direct communication with IRL people. Sometimes, it is super-convenient, like "Hey man can you pick up the milk I am at work right now and won't leave for a while" is like, god-send thing to do and have. But when people are relying on their online devices and stuff as a communication-assisting crutch it can be worrying. I almost ended up as one as well. However, I kinda depend on having people around to feel good (I think that defines a extrovert), so I am always for meeting up and talking and discussing it over. However, I don't mind using texts as a substitute sometimes, although if I can and could, I would gladly talk with my voice (aahh, how can I even make these errors?!). In short, can relate, I can only suggest you to just keep calling instead of texting, and demand the potential co-speaker to explain you the other way (without phone/mail) because "you wouldn't get it otherwise" (lie or not, depends on you). Kinda terraform your social circle into talking more, and discussing, I dunno how, but just... I dunno how I do this, but I have good friends who don't mind me rambling and ranting, so I just start doing my verbal rumbles until I start asking questions, like "What do you think about [x]?" or "What would you do if you were [y]?" stuff like that. People might not have time, but trust me, if the social net is tight enough, other people might start picking up the habit and voila, all organic-speaking motherfuckers I dunno how to properly explain with psychology terms and stuff, so my advice might not be graded high.

You guys ever see that iphone commercial with avatars that actually talk as you talk? One is a unicorn, one is a dog, one is a pile of shit.
I wonder if holograms become popular, and this whole experience of talking with people online becomes a real-time conversation of holograms that project in your living room. Some people may choose their actual form, others could be like cartoons or something. Imagine what that would do for apps like Tinder.
Maybe they'll incorporate something like google maps, where you can live in a virtual version of the real world (you know like the satellite version of street view). people can put on VR head sets, and live in a virtual version of the real world as avatars.
god, it's such a horrible prospect though, if you really think about it. Motherfuckers will never go out.

Join the army if you want to be forced and surrounded by other people that are also forced to not use the phones while doing army duties.

If I can choose the option to meet with someone in person to speak then I do. Half of the reason might be that I actually find e-mailing more difficult/stressful though....

The future belongs to the idiot, who has no opinion of his own other than what is popular at the time. It was always so, but now, for the first time in the history of mankind, it is apparent for all to see.
My telephone is an Ericsson T65. It is seventeen years old now, and you can call other people with it. If you're feeling the need for adventure, you can also send text messages but no pictures. Its battery lasts a week without recharge. I don't use any social media bullshit other than this forum, which I think doesn't count.
So yeah, I'm in the "Neophobe" camp as well. And as Vordakk said, there are quite a few who doesn't approve, fortunately. Of course we are outnumbered, but still.

I am about to make the switch to a flip phone, myself.
And as far as being outnumbered...one of us can just infiltrate the other side and implant the idea that we are right into just one of their heads. The opinion will spread like a virus and they'll be incapable of fighting it once one of their friends buys into that opinion.

I've never been a very good friend when it comes to calling. I've made it part of my new years resolution to work on this. It was only until recently that I realized how frustrating it can be to always be the person that initiates the calls, but I think I can explain it in a way that makes sense.
My wife has always had a really good relationship with her friends. They've been tight since they have been little kids and they all know everything about each other and keep very close. They always call and get together often and it looks like a lot of fun. I have plenty friends but few that I consider to be very close. Every once in a while a friend will send me a text message or give me a call and if I'm busy or whatever I might not respond right away. If I can't think of anything to talk at length about I might not return the call at all. I don't mean anything by it but because of the distance associated with it, I never really think about what it's like to reach out to someone and be rejected by their negligence. I'm strictly business with my phone, i use it to exchange information. Where are you at? How do you get there? When's that thing we were supposed to do?, etc. So when people would call or text just to say what's up, it never seemed like high priority to me. But it really is.
Anytime you have a friend, it's always important to check on them and ask what they're up to, how they're feeling, and what's been going on lately. I realized that my wife has a very active social life with her friends because she makes the calls to ask about how that job interview went, or what happened at the party you were at last night, or if you want to get lunch tomorrow to catch up. I always kinda took that stuff for granted when people made that move towards me but it's stupid not to honor that advance. So lately, I've come to realize that if I want to have close friends, I just have to be the kinda friend I'd want people to be for me. So I do text and call a little more often now, but I also realize I was kinda shitty for a long time, so if I feel I'm being rejected when people don't respond to my calls or messages, I make peace with the idea that they probably don't realize that's what is happening and I just make an effort to keep trying every couple days or so.
So I guess what I'm saying is not to let the person make you angry or feel annoying. You're doing the right thing, and it's your friend that's in the wrong.

A buddy of mine did that for me the other day.
Just a random text with no plans to hang out in mind.
"Hey man, how's it going?" "What's up brother?" "Nothing, just at work. Wondering how you've been."
That felt amazing. Someone at work just thought to themselves for no reason, "Wonder how Trace is doing."

Cons: - None.

^ Holy christ. What a trip!
I'm in the market for a new phone but I can't seem to find anything that fits my needs. I really don't want companies touching my stuff and updating my software constantly, but I would like a personal computer that I can carry in my pocket that makes calls and texts.
If I really need to, I'd like some sort of pocket PC that's fast and efficient and does the Doom stuff that I need it to do, and then just have a seperate ericcson T65 too. I'd just carry around both items for different purposes.
