What are your favorite themes for levels? A few I can think of are: - Techbase - Tech/Hell (See: Episode 2) - Fleshy/Marble/Red/Wooden (E4) Hell - Brick and Metal - Earth City
Personally, I am on the fence between Techbase and Brick/Metal. Techbase provides one of the largest texture groups in the game, and it can be mixed with other texture groups and still retain a nice appearance. With WADs like Suspended in Dusk, Techbase textures provide some of the highest potential to create amazing looking levels with stock textures. Brick and Metal levels are a bit over-done, but the reason is simply because the textures look great together. Many maps in the Brick/Metal style are usually minimalist in detail, and remind me of the late 90s style of detailing which I prefer even to highly detailed levels.

I've always thought that for Doom/Doom 2 levels that use only stock textures, techbases and brick-themed levels usually come out looking the best. Doom's assets are better suited for those environments in my opinion. I always feel really limited when I try to do a hellish-style level using only stock textures, which is why I will usually insert custom textures in those cases. But honestly, if the wad author has enough creativity and can think outside the box, he can make any type of theme look amazing.

I'm going to go with techbase. Mainly because of nostalgia. Episode 1 of Doom is completely magical to me. That was my childhood way back when.

I have to say, my favorites are in Episodes 1 and 2; I really liked E4M9 too.

Techbase and the hell theme. The city theme in Doom II doesn't have very much textures so your choice is limited in that theme.

Marble, but have been experimenting with hell textures and flats and it's really good when done right.

Techbase sucks, give me surreal horror every day. Especially stuff which starts as a semi-realistic castle or dungeon, or even vaguely technological, but quickly becoming weird.

As a player, I mostly prefer City themed maps. They usually have that openness and feel more real, even if they are not real. You know how everyone has that dream to end up in a zombie apocalypse and take whatever they want in a shopping mall? But as a mapper, I absolutely adore Techbases as they're easy as hell to make (no pun intended). Just make a bunch of rooms, connect them with corridors and stick computer terminals wherever you can! It's really that easy! (of course it's not.)
Hell maps are cool too, because they don't really have to be anything strictly defined. You could make a map which is a huge cereal bowl and say that Hell is a strange and twisted place and it can take any forms possible, and it'll be completely legitimate.
