Out of curiosity, has anyone tried playing Doom on some sort of medication and noticed any notable changes in your performance? I don't take any sort of medication but I know quite a few people who regularly take some sort of mood elevators, ADHD medication, anxiety medication, or pain relievers. I've always wondered, if they played games, if they would play differently if they were on or off the medication.
For clarification, this isn't a suggestion to start testing different medications, prescribed or otherwise, to point people to the best performance enhancing drug for Doom. Just interested in reading your description of your experience.
I've only played Doom a few times on weed or alcohol, never both.
When I'm buzzed or drunk, I play waaaaaayyy too impatiently, my evasive movements are severely overcompensated which often throws me into pitfalls or into more danger. I die often and get bored really fast. It's hard to stick with it without wanting to do something else.
Sometimes on weed, I find the game to be much more fun. I get a little more immersed into the game and my ability to believe the narrative like I'm the protagonist in the story is a bit more present. I guess I'm just more open to suggestion and the thought of being a digital representation of 1's and 0's and walking on sectors with textures on them is a little less present than in a normally sober state. I'm less frustrated with losses, and sometimes have really high spatial awareness. I surprise myself actually, somehow being able to dodge fireballs and missiles that come from behind without even turning around to look at them. I also have a really acuity for provoking infighting. However, I'm also in a pretty suggestive state too, so maybe I just play the same way I normally would except that my reception to positive feedback is heightened. Idk.
I'm not much of a caffeine person, but surely some of you know the difference between playing Doom first thing in the morning vs. having a coffee, soda, or red bull first?
Does anybody take any sort of meds on the regular, and have had different experiences playing Doom on or off of them?

I’ve played stoned, drunk, and drunk and stoned. And it’s amazing when you’re in the mood and ready to receive the spirits. I did the BTSXes and CC4 like this and it was a spiritual experience, such pretty colours and lupinx-kassman, how can you go wrong? I play music “fucked up” so to speak, so Doom is a walk in the park and a trip. Fuck me, I’m fucked up now, what am I Saying?

I play and map more efficiently when I've had Ritalin and epilepsy medication (I take them together since Ritalin makes up for the lethargic feeling I get when I just take my epilepsy medication on it's own), but playing too many new levels in a row makes me burn out quickly. ;P

Playing drunk just makes me more laid back about my performance. This leads to more stupid deaths and less reaction to them. I've probably done some mapping whilst drinking, but due to the nature of the process, to do the whole thing drunk would be pretty hard work.

I usually take as little drugs as possible, excepting alcohol and caffeine, but fatigue has a great negative effect on my performance. I can't recall having played Doom drunk, but I've played other games while intoxicated with varying degrees of success. Being a little or moderately drunk (is that even a possibility?) is usually no hinderance, but too much and any attempt will be redundant. I drink lots of coffee, and I drink it black and quite strong, which is nothing unusal here up in the north. According to what I've read, we drink the most coffee in the world. I actually drink coffee as I'm typing this. However, I don't feel any more awake by drinking it, and nor do I have trouble going to sleep after doing so. So the effect on my dooming is nil. It could be argued that I don't feel it since I drink it so much, but then again, others in my vincinity who consume it in similar quantities do. So I don't know. Does anyone else have a similar experience? Also, is it true that people can get an epileptic fit from looking at flashing colours, deathevokation ? Or is that just something that holds little merit but still gets told, such as the incessant cursing of Tourettes patients?

Yeah, it's true and I learned it the hard way.. the genre it mostly has an impact on is horror... I can't play modern horror games or watch modern horror movies. I don't think I'm missing out on much in the movie department, heh... but it's sad having to skip decent looking horror games, though.. I can only watch old school horror and anime horror that both rely more on being genuinely creepy and turning your stomach.
I also had a seizure once when I sat with a Christian friend who was watching an Ancient Aliens episode.. where they constantly try to demonize Christianity and would flash images that I'm not sure anyone else saw, but I picked up on one because of my epilepsy (a clip of the painting of Virgin Mary but with her eyes rolling up until you only saw white at the last split second of the frame) and that night had one of the worst experiences that was a cross between half seizure half nightmare.
edit: oh and drinking with friends while playing cooperative survival is awesome, I only have 2 or so drinks, so that Doom is still on the forefront and it doesn't turn into an early night. ;P

I can only watch old school horror and anime horror that both rely more on being genuinely creepy and turning your stomach. That's the only kind that should exist. Horror movies are so fucking annoying. I don't know what the appeal is for all the flashing images and loud noises and whatever. I'm sorry that it effects in such a way that you can't even watch it, but even though I can, I find it so frustrating and any movie or game that has stuff like that would be better without it.

There are some games that had genuinely interesting art directions though... like Layers of Fear. (I confirmed I had epileptic seizures with this game)
I totally agree with you though, mindless "PEEKABOO" horrors have destroyed the genre, along with their fading the scenes with static. Their target market are partly to blame as well... "Oh you guys should go see this movie at the cinema, I went with Jill and the moment when the door flew open you should have seen her face!"
Cringe everytime!

For clarification, this is definitely a suggestion to start testing different medications, prescribed or otherwise, to point people to the best performance enhancing drug for Doom. This is how I read this, and this is how I am going to treat it. I bet my aunt's arthritis medication will enable me to play for hours, and my buddy's antipsychotics will yield currently unknown results. Oh man...this is going to be awesome. Thank you, 40oz, for pushing me to take drugs and play DOOM. Serious note though...I haven't ever smoked marijuana... but my friend has...and my friend told me that he has never played DOOM while high. But that once when he was in high school, he played the original Max Payne after smoking a bit of the whacky tobacky and found it to be much more immersive. Furthermore, every action in the game had a much more profound effect on him. Heh, at one point, he claims that he actually felt remorse for killing somebody in the game. I bet that was an incredible experience for him. However, he has told me that despite how much more immersive and fun games are when under the influence of THC, he will not indulge in the activity again until marijuana becomes legal for recreational use in his state of, er... Montana.

I have suspected for some time now that 40oz is the devil in disguise. Not only is he running a hardcore national socialist board, where he entices the impressionable youth with promises of Mein Leben, no, he also wants you to do drugs while playing the ultra-violent snuff-murder simulator known as DOOM! He will probably groom us into accepting satanism and role playing games any day now. I don't think I need to write this, but yeah, I'm joking.
EDIT: I'm sorry to hear that, Deathevokation. Totally with you & 40oz regarding the current horror movies.

^From what I heard, he also wants us to go vegetarian because his worship of goats (ERMAGERD THE SATANZ AMINALS) has led him to become one with goat kind, and by extension, the entire animal kingdom. He feels that every time I enjoy a steak, I am actually eating a part of his ethereal being. Taem gnitae pots tsum uoy emag eht niw ot!
I think I do need to write this. I am actually not joking.

While 40 might well indeed be pushing it a bit here in the name of Doom, at least he doesn’t force his best mapper to chop off his pee pee and become a girl in the name of furthering his own sjw ideology. Yet.

Well, you got to find your niche. I know of another site where such depravity is advertised frequently.

I'm pretty vanilla with drugs, but I abuse coffee and alcohol more than I should. In terms of skill, I'm a pretty volatile player; my peak performance is high but my lows are low. With caffeine/alcohol, I'm even more all over the place. Both drugs seem to help sometimes, but then I overdo it and performance goes downhill. Whether they help or hurt also depends on how stressed I am that day, how stressed i get while playing, how well I ate, etc. Over-the-counter Anti-inflammatory meds usually help a lot too, and generally prolong the time it takes to burn-out.

About 99% of my Dooming is done on marijuana. I especially like to take really big tokes and let loose, as the euphoria really puts me in the game's world, dramatically amplifying the immersion factor. I don't even play it after drinking because I fall asleep after a single beer. I once played a bit of Doom 64ex after coming down from mushrooms and it made everything a lot sharper. I could really examine the details of the textures and lighting which was delightful.

Getting back to the main topic, I keep meaning to play Doom at the peak of a psilocybin or DMT experience, but it never happens. Display monitors are so intense looking in that state—often covered in multidimensional fractals—that it's anxiety-inducing trying to look at them. This is especially true of a DMT peak, where your entire reality may shift to that of a completely alien universe, at which point a TV or computer screen might look 100% unrecognizable. Still, being that Doom is a huge part of my psyche, I've been wanting to perform this test in order to observe any interesting visuals or perceptions. I will say this: Last year, during a particularly high dose of psilocybin, I did see distinct images that felt Doom-ish; namely, fractal imagery resembling the door textures from both OG Doom and Doom '16, as well as "sexual demons" that represented my libido, but seemed to also be mild interpretations of barons of hell and the death knights from Quake. I remember them staring into my soul, and then morphing into fat women.
