In the wake of the Steam and GOG Cyber Monday sales, I did manage to pick up a few cheap games, and one of them was Dead Space, which I got in a pack with its sequel, Dead Space 2. I just beat the game on medium difficulty. The main reason I was interested in this title was because I read that at some point in its development it was originally intended as System Shock 3. Having completed the entire game, I can certainly see the resemblance to the System Shock series, although I was always cognizant of the fact that this game felt like a console game, and thus inferior and limited by its very nature. I do think it's a good game and I would recommend it though. The positives are good visuals, original weaponry, pretty fun gameplay and some good scares along the way. The negatives are that you have to tweak the game using third party software to get it to work right on PC because of how shitty the port is, and as I stated before, the fact that this game reeks of console(dumbed-down puzzles, hand-holding, not open enough, etc.).
The funniest moment for me was when you walk through the corridor to the flight lounge, where the ship's captains reside. Along the walls are very official-looking pictures of each ship captain. Whoever did this game really bent over backwards to be politically correct, that's all I'll say. There's a captain of every race: a white guy, a black guy, a hispanic woman, an asian person, even a muslim captain with a turban! It totally broke the immersion because of how ridiculously forced it was. I mean, what are the odds that there would be exactly one of each race represented in the captain's circle?
I dunno, I thought it was funny.
