After 20 years of practice playing this damn game in periods of many hours in a week, and long periods of hiatus, I've experienced waves of sharpness and dullness when it comes to my playing ability. Doom, as it stands, is a pretty straightforward game. But because the rudimentary actions of pointing and clicking at monsters until they die is a bit of a tired concept, great innovations have been made in people's new maps in order to shake up the experience, and invade the player's comfort zone.
I am by no means the best representative of extraordinary playing ability, but by playing many different wads from a large variety of authors, participating in Doom discussions, reviewing information in the Doom Wiki, and combing through the minutiae of Doom's source code, I like to think I have at least a little bit of an edge over the majority of your average Doom players. However, this information collides pretty indiscriminately with the player's motor skills, dexterity, and focus on the circumstances of the game.
In my own experience, I think the most insidious thing to happen in my playing experience is to submit to autopilot. A mode of playing where my attention is divided between the game and something else less immediate. Perhaps what I'm playing isn't very engaging, and I feel bored. So I don't put 100% of my focus on the game. Maybe 15% of it or so is thinking about something outside of my playing experience, which lends me to the likelihood of making crucial mistakes which reduce my chances of reaching the exit before death.
Since the difficulty curve of megawads seems to incline as you get closer to the end, I've pinned myself into a sort of unfortunate trap. I have many unfinished megawads on my playlist, where I reach a point of challenge insurmountable within the bounds of my own esteem. As I've flown through many, if not all maps adequately sized to my skill set and below, I don't have the means to continue my playing to keep my precision shooting and evasive maneuvers acute. I've trespassed into a state of longing for more levels to play where I can be tested without facing the cold hard truth of my lacking ability.
I'd like to initiate a discussion where people can pitch in some repeatable tips or training exercises that you have tried that worked favorably for you. I will post a few of my own and hopefully this will help get the ball rolling on this path of drilling us all into the hardened undefeatable doom mercenaries we've always wished we could be.
