It's been known for at least a decade now that the soundfx Doom or Heretic or Wolfenstein and most other games use came from sound libraries that are used in other forms of media. This is why you sometimes here the camel sounds on TV that were used for Doom's zombie men, or the pistol sound for gunfire on TV, or the Icon of Sin whooosh sounds in fiery explosions.
Sometimes, without even listening to these sound libraries, I can almost certainly tell that the soundfx I'm hearing in the background of a TV show were artificially inserted into the show. The sounds of babies crying, cats screeching, or children playing, almost always stick out to me. I think they only have like 3 individual sounds in that category or something because I hear them all the time. There's also laugh tracks I've heard so many times that I'm certain I've heard the same voices laughing in that perfect uniformity before.
Are there soundfx you hear repeated in tv shows or movies all the time like I do? Does it drive you crazy?

Yeah, this bothers me a lot as even a minor sound effect can seriously damage the atmosphere if it's already associated with another context in your mind. Anyone who takes the mood of their work seriously should absolutely invest into making new sounds. It might be not less important than the soundtrack, for example. I've seen some small documentaries on sound making and it seems like such a fun process. The guy has all sorts of weird tools in the room and he's trying various crazy combinations of them hoping to stumble upon something interesting. I think there should be much more people doing that stuff and most sound effects should be unique to the game\movie\whatever they are used in. This should be taken more seriously by the art world.

There's one sound effect in particular of a crowd cheering that is used for seemingly EVERY crowd scene ever.. It's even used in Rush 2 for n64, I hear one guy yelling in the background specifically and that's how I recognize it every time. It's used an insane amount. I agree that hearing the same samples over and over and over just seems lazy at this point, especially when others must surely be out there and quite inexpensive to license/produce.

The 'man getting machine-gunned to death' sample used in Command & Conquer.
And yeah, that Icon of Sin fireflash noise. What the fuck is that even meant to be? *Nothing* makes that noise, let alone fucking fire.
