"Methinks" turns out to be an actual goddamn word, even an archaic one at that. It's also a verb, but a so called "defective" one, meaning that it lacks some verbal forms. (ie you can't say "I'll be methinking" or "he methought" or such shit, and honestly who in their right mind would?) I thought it was a meme phrase ffs whenever I'd see you all using it. Another interesting linguistic phenomenon: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_cognate(turns out for example, the words male and female have completely different origins) I remember reading that when the Spanish came to colonise the Mayans and convert them to Christianity, they turned out to both have the same word for "God". Fun stuff to think about. Linguistics is super intriguing to me for some reason. Unrelated: Paracetamol is a gift from God and probably could cure cancer in a sufficient dosage. Felt kinda warm and weak when I went to bed and eventually figured that I should take two pills and shit went away like a charm. |

Elizabeth I used "methinks" a lot when making speeches to parliament; I suspect it was the Elizabethan equivalent of adding "allegedly" to save reams of legal paper later on down the road (or in Lizzy's case, firing a warning shot over the heads of some upstart lords; it's a fine line between a Monarch's Methinks to a Monarch's Meprooves).
You'll find it in Shakespeare as well (from the mouth of a Queen, now that I think about it).
