I just started playing this game on Tuesday after buying it on GOG. I've completed about 60-70% of the game. So far it has been really, really good. It's a Metroidvania, borrowing heavily from Castlevania but also never feeling too derivative. It combines some ideas from Symphony of the Night with aspects of Rondo of Blood, and then puts its own spin on the whole thing. The level design is awesome, and the way you progress and upgrade is done just right. I really like the graphical style(later period NES graphics with Ninja Gaiden-style cinematics) and the way they did the sound effects and music. It feels less like a "retro-hipster-cool" new game and more like an actual game from 1989 or 1990. Great game.

Whoa, this looks awesome; I'm liking the aesthetics. I always loved these RPG/ side-scrollers. I think I will check this game out.

I finished the game up last weekend with 100% completion. As I expected, the final boss was *Nintendo-hard* and it took me quite a few tries to beat him. Another thing I really liked about this game was how fair it was. Many old classic video games caused me to rage uncontrollably because of minor issues like shitty hit detection or controller lag, but Odallus is very well calibrated and tested. You only fail because of your own lack of skill, which just makes me want to try harder and get better rather than give up in frustration because I got knocked off of a ledge by some cheap piece-of-shit regenerating eagles(Ninja Gaiden for NES). So yeah, it was a wild ride and I can't wait to play more from this company. Maybe I'll check out their other release, Oniken.
EDIT: Just saw that Oniken is literally 74 cents on Steam from now until November 2, so I'm getting it.
