I managed to come across this video last night, which is by no means new. It was the first time I've seen it. There was a recent news thing where the writer of the HL3 storyline released his written backstory for Half Life 3 to the public, presumably confirming that there's no chance that HL3 is ever going to be released. I got in an argument with some Half Life fans when i commented on how poorly written the story is and that it was obvious that HL3 was in a very bad place to begin with.
Below is a video of the original Half Life long before it was actually released. What was especially striking to me is the comic-book-like nature of the models. The headcrabs, for example are red and have badonkadonks. The scientist models look kinda like cartoon characters. It seems almost intentionally silly, versus the more realistically shaped models and animations and textures that came long after. Without a doubt, the final product made for a much better game. But what can be seen in the alpha does suggest to me that there was this weird point in the game's development where it's not very clear they knew what they were doing.
Half Life fans have always irked me because I don't see what's particularly compelling about the game that brings on this cult-like fanbase. In the arguments I've had with fans, they seem to attribute half-life for being this amazing storytelling device with all sorts of mystery and lore that makes it so profound. Half life seems like this really fortunate accident to me, really. The things it does best are the things that make it like Doom.
