I've dodged many tens of thousands of these and I've never questioned it until now.
Are they objects that happen to be on fire? Are they some kind of spitball made of a flammable substance? Are they concentrated energy balls? Is it all a magical illusion?
Imp fireballs, being red, orange, and yellow best resemble fire. The Baron of Hell balls however are green and have a sort of cloudy look to them, like a noxious gas, almost. Maybe some sort of wet sludge or something resembling bathtub suds that are green. Cacodemon fireballs I've read are more akin to lightning balls, which is a whole other situation since they puff into a cloud when they explode.
Do they have a mass? Are they heavy? Are they wet? What do they hurt like? Do they burn or do they detonate like a fragmentation grenade? Are they technology or are they magic? Are they supposed to defy the laws of physics or are they made of some sort of chemical compound?

They probably don't have a mass. I don't see how else you can explain why they don't fall to the ground no matter the distance, unless they are alive and are consciously putting effort into maintaining the same vertical position. The wind doesn't have any effect on them either.
An interesting property of fireballs is that they can not be stopped. You can't hold one in your hands or trap it in some sort of a container. They always explode on touch. So we can probably deduce that they are very fragile and are just barely held together by some force.

They are a hellish force of fire and a steady stream of helium. Another theory I'd like to submit is that the imps shoot microscopic lost souls with huge flames surrounding them.

Imp fireballs look like baseball size fiery centres in the middle of a perfectly rotund ball of fire. Baron/HK balls look like solid green snot, or the projectiles the Mummy Dargon from Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap expels. The solid consensus of the Mighty Cak is Ball Lightning as 40 mentioned as well. Manc balls look like mini horizontal mushroom clouds and Rev balls look like paper mache in fire. Obviously they’re all lit like the flash paper that Jerry Lawler, the human master of the fireball, throws in a wrestling ring.

They're clearly tiny suns.

They’re made of cohesive plasma!
