The story in the manual says UAC experimented with interdimensional travel. Yet there aren't any man-made teleporters in the game, there's only pentagrams or baphomets marked on marble/brimstone pedestals clearly taken from hell. What's going on?

UAC only has 2 teleporters between Phobos and Deimos. I guess one of them is supposed to be the deadly floor that kills you in the end of E1M8. I agree, they should've made a better job to make it look man-made, but the whole map is abstract nonsense to begin with. That level should've been made by mister Romero. Have you played Tech Gone Bad? I don't remember what he did there, but at least the map looks like a classic UAC base that's been overrun by hell

I think of The Shores of Hell, and Doom 2, and how people excuse Sandy Petersen's whacky texturing in with the idea that hell has transformed what was previously a network of space stations into rivers of blood, marble, and charred rock. The demons came in through the teleports, so if anything is being transformed, the teleports would probably be the first to go.

Have you played Tech Gone Bad? I don't remember what he did there E1M8b has the same teleporter pad as the original. I do like the abstractness of E1M8, it makes it feel like it's been corrupted by hell, but not to the extent of a bloody mess in E2. 40oz I didn't think of that. For a mega corporation specialized in teleportation experiments, there seems to be very few teleporters in E1 though (1 of each in M5, M8, and M9). I'm guessing the bulk of the experiments were done on Deimos, which is why it ended up getting conquered first. Before the teleporters were transformed they might have looked like the start/exit pads from Plutonia.
