Having been born and lived in the united states my whole life, and having driven in the metric-system-using Canada, I gotta say kilometers are better. To this day, the actual length of a mile is still pretty abstract to me. A foot is a pretty simple length. Yards are three of those, fine. But a mile is 5,280 of those? I have no idea wtf that is.
In the metric system, a kilometer is roughly about the distance you can see at the end of the horizon while you're driving (assuming you're not descending from a giant hill or something). When google maps tells you your turn is coming up in 1 km, that's when you should be keeping an eye out for your next turn because its coming up pretty soon. The equivalent in the imperial system is 0.2 miles. What the fuck is 0.2 miles? Trying to do the math in my head, one fifth of 5280 feet... uh, what is that? Like a thousand and forty feet? Think about a 12 in ruler. 1,040 of those? How long is that exactly? What a stupid ass number.
Also when google maps suddenly converts the short distance you are away from your destination from miles to hundreds of feet, this is also dangerously difficult to monitor while driving.
Lastly, In the united states, the usual highway speed is about 55, 60 MPH. The usual highway speed in the metric system is an even 100 km/h. Exceeding 100 km/h is about the speed where its starting to get dangerous, and you should keep an eye out for cops. That's a very easy baseline to keep track of.
So yeah, miles suck. Kilometers are better.

The metric system is so sweet, so pure. We start with millimeters - 10 millimeters make one 1 centimeter; 10 centimeters make one decimeter; 10 decimeters (or 100 centimeters) make 1 meter; 100 meters make 1 hectometer, 10 hectometers (or 1000 meters) make one kilometer. It doesn't get any easier than that. I don't know how people deal with the so-called customary system, but it's pure nonsense! Let's do it in reverse - 1 mile is 1760 yards; 1 yard is 3 feet; 1 foot is 12 inches? Okay, the smaller it gets, it kinda makes sense, but the mile measurement is bullshit.

USA is just behind the times, their measure system used to be the global norm until the French made their research and invented the metric system. For example in the medieval times in Israel instead of measuring with feet, length was measured with forearms.

Having grown with the metric system, and then being introduced to the US system later in life, I can say that although it really looks strange and stupid when you first see it as an experienced metric user, there are some interesting advantages to the US system.
Sure, metric is much easier for calculations, and that is why it is used almost exclusively in science. However for every day life, I observed that: 1. Length as multiples of 2 and 3 leads to a more flexible system of divisors (as you also get 6, 12, 24). 2. Pounds and ounces give you finer-grained division of weights that is useful in every life, whereas a kilogram is often too much and a gram is too small, so you end up having to use fractions everywhere. 3. Same thing about Fahrenheit versus Celsius - 1F is roughly 0.5C and sometimes makes a noticeable difference.
However, there is one area where the US system is stupid beyond repair and makes no sense whatsoever, and that is time and date.
1. Using month-day-year which breaks the natural order. 2. Using the 12-hour system with AM/PM in official time-keeping is so dumb.

Interesting perspective. I grew up with the imperial system and have appreciated the metric system more. I agree with you on weights and temperature. kilograms are not very good. And I have a lot of trouble determining what clothes to wear outside when reading temperatures in celsius. I basically interpret farenheit as 100 and above is hot enough to kill you, and 0 and below is cold enough to kill you, with 60-80 being ideal comfortable temperatures. I've never tried using celsius for cooking/baking. I assume it's probably not too bad if you're used to it. Interesting point about measurements in thirds, I hadn't thought of that. Kilometers are better than miles though.

"2 meters under" doesn't ring right.
