2, 3, and 6 are probably the best and funniest. 4 is the craziest. This is no continuity from one to another except from 5 to 6, and the original directly to the newest Leprechaun Returns, and the lore may vary somewhat from film to film. So in most movies it's not the necessarily same Leprechaun even though it's the same costumed actor with the same personality and they can be watched out of order.
The original Leprechaun (1992) is a good start to the series with some pretty funny stuff.
Leprechaun 2 (1994) takes place in Los Angeles on St. Patrick's Day. This is one of best, possibly the funniest.
Leprechaun 3 (1995) takes place in Las Vegas. Also one of the best and funniest. Introduces some interesting werewolf/vampire type infection lore with hilarious results. Something cool I immediately noticed watching it recently is that an amulet the Leprechaun is vulnerable to has a Helm of Awe on it. Sometime when actually good movies are being made again, a Leprechaun Vs Vikings prequel to this movie would be awesome, if they can get the original or another good actor to do it.
Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996) - Definitely the craziest one and worth seeing for its total absurdity. Always remember, the Leprechaun made it to outer space before Jason Voorhees did! I haven't seen it since it was new so I need to rewatch it and see just how funny it is.
Leprechaun 5: In the Hood (2000) - I think this is the weakest of the original 6 movies. Haven't watched it since it was new other than some youtube clips.
Leprechaun 6: Back 2 Tha Hood (2003) - A direct sequel to In the Hood, but much better and hilarious
Leprechaun Returns (2018) - I quick skimmed part of the description and stopped reading as I haven't seen it yet and don't want things spoiled, but I want to see this one sometime. This is apparently a direct sequel to the original Leprechaun movie from 1992. Unfortunately the main actor declined to take up the role again even though he's not really that old, because his view of horror movies has changed since he became a father. Seeing the trailer disappointed me as they got a normal child actor as his replacement and didn't alter his voice enough to not sound like a kid. Still if the writing is good enough and the movie is overall creative and funny enough, it might be decent, maybe at least as good as 5, but I'm not going to watch it with high expectations.
Unrelated:
Leprechaun Origins (2014) - Only thing in common is a killer leprechaun but it's just some kind of not very original nonvocal ghoul. It's a WWE production. I'm not too familiar with the most recent wrestlers, but one guy you can tell is one by his muscular stature and probably at least one woman is a wrestler. Certainly not a bad horror movie, but disappointing if you thought it was part of the Leprechaun series. Origins is dumb to have in the title as there's no origin story whatsoever. Leprechaun 6: Back 2 tha Hood I think actually had the most origin story of all.
Throughout the series the Leprechaun is very mischievous spouting limericks, sometimes dirty ones.
On Dredge forums I jokingly suggested The Leprechaun DLC with this limerick I made up mixing stuff from a couple movies with Dredge-related stuff:
Try as he think. Try as he might.
He who steals me gold won't live through the night.
Whether by raft or by boat,
He must be daft as only his corpse will still float.
Stealing me gold
is no way to grow old.
It doesn't matter if he can run a marathon.
I'll feed his chummed bits to the Leviathan.
Hahahaha!
Here's a good tribute that's pretty good about cutting scenes before spoilers, but I recommend seeing some movies first:
