So basically... it seems like this was kicked off by a harrassment campaign that Sweet Baby Inc started against a curator group for making a list of games that were tainted by awful story redesigns; that have so far gotten 3 gaming studios closed down.. this led to a bunch of coordinated articles from "gaming" sites targeting this curator and calling gamers evil.
Anyway here's a video I found useful.. the author attempts to be objective.
I have a prediction that this'll expose more industry corruption but eventually get rewritten in 10 years time into a "harrassment campaign" and the truth will get gaslighted into hiding..
I guess we'll see? Hopefully it's fun to watch.

I'm half-way through that one at the moment. I lost the bear druid to some nasty goblins while trying to save him in the castle, so I don't get to sex him - furry subplot failed. But, I still have a chance to circle-back and finish that one quest where you stop that one night-hag from grooming 12-year-old boys into going onto hormones and thinking they are lesbians. |

Due to how dogshit most triple A games have been in the past several years ive been mostly playing older games (like most people, I imagine). I've also kind of rediscovered a love for Japanese games as well since theyre not trying to make a social statement and are more focused on entertaining you, the customer.

This feels like such a forced controversy lol. Even the name "Sweet Baby Inc." feels like it was engineered specifically to piss off conservative gamer bros online. Life's too short to care about some consulting companies proofreading or whatever I'm supposed to be angry about here.

It's fine for people to be upset about ponzi schemes, particularly when they have significant social impact and that's essentially what the whole esg dei thing is at it's core. I think the focus on one tiny arm of it is a bit absurd but I also understand that a lot of regular people don't really understand it as a whole so it's easy to focus on the things most visible to them. I know I certainly didn't fully understand what was going on back when I almost entirely stopped consuming new media like a decade ago. I just saw a huge dip in quality and a bunch of over the top progressive stuff shoe horned into everything.
Having said that it is a house of cards built on even more houses of cards so like all ponzi schemes it's collapse is inevitable. We've seen more than our fair share of that playing out for quite some time.

Tbh one of the most telling stories so far has been the Helldivers 2 drama around alphabet people groups trying to insert their dumb flags etc into the game.
Tbh will probably buy and try out Helldivers 2 after I look into the game more and make sure that studio isn't going to cave and insert our absolutely idiotic politics into their game.
Tbh this whole thing could be a distraction. Especially with that tictok bill which passed the house. Need to read into that bill to see how generalized that pos actually is.

As annoying as advertisers are they do what they do cause they've found it makes companies more money to alienate as few potential customers as they can. Hogwart's Legacy did so well because it's a decent & generic open world game themed around one of the world's biggest IPs, not cause Warner Brothers bravely pushed back on "woke" ideology. The Twitter drama over it was pretty one sided from left wing armchair activists, I personally didn't really see any conservative praise for it or anything. This consulting company is only ever hired because companies perceive their work as helping increase sales. |

Oh I absolutely agree it feels forced tbh, both sides were very quick to agree it was GG2... you're wrong on the second part, there's a very very real market crash that's going to happen in video gaming soon so I think the journalists are preemptively blaming it on gamers and not on the trash games themselves.. the money from ESG turns out to not be profitable in the long term because the supply of the funds isn't infinite, because your basically writing offensively bland "stories", telling fans "they're not going to get what they want" to fill in check boxes and oftentimes the lore gets overwritten and franchises get ruined (they kill off or replace male super heroes in the universe). Newer franchises built from the ground up like Forspoken ended up having copies get put into landfills and an entire studio layed off. They seem only able to inject it into long running IPs without it dying immediately, but looking at Suicide Squad it looks like it's only a matter of time before they run out of other people's IPs to ruin. Agree with Ketmar, best to just not buy stuff that's "ok we'll give you your video game, but you have to consume this side slop as well instead of an interesting story". |

I agree that we're going to see a crash in AAA gaming soon but I don't think this sort of thing has anything to do with it. We're seeing game development get more and more expensive every year, while also taking longer and longer to come out. Game studios are also burning through talent at mach speed, and in the end we end up getting so many of the boring, uninteresting games that have been coming out as of late. Developers get worn down, new devs are brought in, and at the end of the studios 5-7 year development cycle you end up with a product with no real personality or direction behind it (see Suicide Squad, Starfield, every Blizzard game, etc.). The whole industry seems super unsustainable at the moment, and I think we're going to see a lot of junior developers jumping off AAA game dev for better paying, more secure jobs in other tech fields. |
