I was shocked recently, as I was researching a topic on google and accidentally stumbled in on a content-rich websit that still ran on web 1.0. (not the same one shown above) I wasn't necessarily shocked at the archaic nature of the site. In fact I was pleased to find such detailed information to read in one location. What was shocking to me was that the site loaded instantaneously. I had almost completely forgotten that the internet evolved from this period of time, where people browsed the world wide web with 56k modems and these types of websites chugged. Now we have high-speed broadband that loads these types of sites in a flash, but the many websites we use daily still crawl. I mean, it's really not that slow, but there is a noticeable wait time for the site to finish loading. What's pretty depressing is that most news websites have articles that are maybe 3 or 4 paragraphs long and spread across 5 pages with ads in between, flash videos, slideshows, and backend traffic trackers that make the site chug, and you still have to wait for so little content. However, web 1.0 pages tend to have tens of thousands of words on a single page and load immediately on today's machines. It's quite depressing, now that the internet seems to be devoid of these old websites. I think I'd really enjoy going down a rabbit hole of personal blogs and informative articles about stuff. I don't have the patience for it on today's internet that is bloated with advertising and clickbait and other topical garbage.

Preaching to the choir dude. Even my work laptops with 4gb of memory are starting to choke on some websites, mostly news aggregates. Though it could be Chrome being a piece of shit, still working on it.

There are so many ads these days, littered over everything. I hate them. They cheapen all forms of art, and make information harder to read. They are distracting, look ugly, and cause the web page to slow down. I don't give a shit about their stupid products. I'm rarely interested enough to click on one. And if I do, it's usually by accident. I also hate how some articles have a font size that is way too large. Like you say, some articles that span five pages could easily be condensed into just one or two. But they need more room to shove ads all over the place!
