But if fans of the series try to avoid DOOM 3, then the release of the re-release of DOOM 64 in 2020 was truly awaited. I finally touched this creation, but gave up halfway through the original campaign. There were several reasons why I didn't like this game:
It was too dark; Almost half of the monster bestiary was cut; The music has completely gone towards ambient; Cannon animations have been cut due to console limitations.
Otherwise, it was still the same “DOOM 2”! With cool new textures and new monster looks. The collection was created on February 5, 2024 by the Doomer Boards team, which has been creating truly cool levels for several years. All of them are made in the style of "DOOM 64" and many problems have been solved. There is less darkness, the design of the locations is pleasing to the eye and, most importantly, the cut monsters from DOOM 2 have been returned. Not all, of course, but most certainly. Most of the arsenal has changed only in graphics. But the reload animation, unfortunately, remained the same as in DOOM 64. No, I won’t write this down as a minus, since something like this has not yet been implemented. But “Unmaykr”, aka “Disincarnater”, was cut out. The reason is that the Plasmagun was made fast again. Moreover, the players dealt with the monsters normally without him.
But what I definitely didn't expect was Chainsaw's behavior change. Now she has become a real instrument of death. It saws very quickly, which does not give any enemy a chance to attack. I have only seen this behavior in the “Enhanced Vanilla Project (EVP)” mod by “A_D_M_E_R_A_L”.
Among the monsters that were returned: Heavy, Archvile and Revenant. In my opinion, the first models do not look very good. The Heavy doesn't look menacing compared to the original from DOOM 2. Look at the screenshot for yourself: when shooting, it looks somehow wrong and a little cropped.
Archville is no better either. Depicting him with four arms is a great idea! But in the game itself it looks too pixelated. Why couldn't the sprite be modified a little? Or at least take the original and make it a little darker? I just saw how one modder in one TC made a four-armed Archvile and he looked fine. Heavy
Fortunately, one monster was implemented normally. Thank you for choosing the model created by DrPyspy. He is known for the popular Doom Delta mod. The creator is still improving it and working on other projects.
He is currently developing Doom 64: Unseen Evil, which completely transforms The Ultimate DOOM and DOOM 2 into the DOOM 64 style. Graphics, enemies, guns and so on. So, the creator made completely new enemy sprites. The question is asked: "Why didn't the DBP Team take his Archville model?" Moreover, it was ready back in 2023! You just had to go to DrPyspy's Crate de la Stuff page where you can download it for free. The most normal sprites among the returned monsters

The collection itself was controversial. At first, I liked Maps: the locations were uncomplicated, the monsters were well located, and levels could be completed in 10-20 minutes. Not only that, they were full of small parts, which has become quite common in modern WADs.
The further I progressed, the better I began to notice the difference between team members. Some created short, but not very outstanding locations. Others made beautiful, but long and “meaty” Maps. But that doesn't make them bad. I completed the entire collection in 3-5 hours, finding all the secrets. MAP05: "Wildness" Bottom line
DBP64: The Vast Silence is a good gift for DOOM 64 fans. Despite some complaints on my part, I completed the collection with pleasure. The main thing is that they brought back some monsters and made the Maps lighter. If you like the style of these Maps, then be sure to download this project!
