I actually really like it. I remember when the legendary Sigvatr created the PalPlus palette. It was shortly before he was banned everywhere for the same reason that Doomworld despises Doomer Boards. Sigvatr noted that the palette lends Doom a darker, more serious look, and I agree. Doom was never what I would call a cartoony game, but PalPlus makes it look less brightly colored, more severe, more dangerous.

Pretty much what Bob said. I perfer DOOM to look gritty. I reckon that many of the people who think it looks "cartoony" feel the same way about any game with sprite-based graphics. I'm not a fan of most wads that actually are cartoony, they tend to feel somewhat obnoxious, even if they are well made. It's just a personal preference. I like things with a sinister design, when it comes to audio and visuals. This is why I'd rather play PSX DOOM vs the PC version. DOOM isn't some hardcore edgelord shit like Hatred or anything, but id didn't set out to make a cartoony game. It was meant to have an edge to it.

i would second that, especially in how it neutralizes some of the neon tones that can be almost jarring - but i do think there's just a tad too many desaturated tones sitting in the same brightness region. what i find interesting is that while it makes techbase textures pop, it simultaneously muddys up the more 'natural' looking textures a bit too much for my tastes
edit: funny, when i wrote neon tones i was thinking in particular of wads that use textures that have max RGB values and how annoying the look generally is LOL

Looks nice. What's the easiest way to use it, say, in PrBoom+?

You're trying to say you like DOS better than me, right?

Looks alright. A bit too toasted looking for my preference.
Personally I'm more partial to ColdPal, IWAD's greens and blues burn my eyes and I like the way that palette kills them a bit. I chuck it into pretty much any wad that doesn't come with its own, and used it in all of my early maps.
Regardless, for my own maps I pretty much always make my own playpal nowadays, so no issue there.

My monitor is already too dark as it is, and I have to bump up the gamma on some pwads, so this would probably just make it worse. Anyway I don't have a problem with the default palette, or even the brighter one in Heretic.

I like it, I should really look to using alternate palettes like this every once in a while.

I think it makes the game look filthy and dark in a good way, but perhaps, a bit too dark. You can barely see what is going on in that Entryway screenshot; and that is an area with an average brightness level.
