You know, I've never given this band a proper listen before. I'm starting to really like them. I remember hearing their music back in 2005, but I was too young to appreciate it. Never gave them much thought afterwards, for some reason. Hearing them again now, these songs are pretty good. But weird and quirky for smash YouTube hits pulling 600 million views. I like that though, it's encouraging.
I wish more bands were successfully experimental and innovative like this in the 2010's. Going back to what DoomKid said in that "Your Favorite Music Decade" thread. Perhaps there is hope for new mainstream percussion music still? I'd like to see another System of a Down, maybe that would inspire a resurgence in progressive/experimental stuff.
I reckon, eventually the trend has to come full circle. Or perhaps the talent and inspiration just isn't there anymore? Rock and metal music is no longer popular, so kids aren't growing up playing instruments and forming bands like the old days.

I got back into them recently. Do you ever find a band that you love so much that you smother the life out of them? You read all the bios of the band members, you read interviews with them, you know the year every album was released and the entire track listing etc.? I don't give a shit about that kind of stuff for a lot of bands I listen to, but System of a Down was different for me.
I used to be kind of obsessed with them in grade school. I've never cared so much for one band in my life. Eventually I squeezed all the enjoyment I could get out of them so i gave up on them entirely for several years. I only come back to them recently, and really noticed how well put together their music is. The lyrics are very poetic and thought provoking. The musical style really fuels the imagination for the kind of visual they want to paint. And like Rage Against The Machine, they have a pretty awesome "shit is fucked up" kind of message to their albums. As an adult I'm noticing a much more profound message to their music now that I didn't completely understand in the past, and I love it.
I've never been in a band but I was always wondered how a group of people, each with their individual sets of values and beliefs come together and create interesting music together. With a lot of metal, it seems like its just a cool riff, a nice drumbeat, and some chaos-loving satan-worshipping lyrics rinsed and repeated a thousand times. These guys in System of a Down seemed really well in tune with one another about creating music where each song has a different story to tell or message to deliver. I don't even understand how a group can feel each other out so well and deliver a quality product.

Singer needs some work. A bit flat at (all) times. Otherwise it's okay. My opinion is of course not incredibly weighty.

I just like that you called them "System of the Down". Can't stand this group myself, but if you guys like it that's fine by me.

I think the spastic inflections from the vocalist is my favorite part of this band. His delivery is totally manic lol. It is pretty funny, but I like it.

I remember having a slight System of a Down surge when mapping for TNT: Resistance. Really like the songs X, Toxicity and Aerials.

Probably because it's hell on the vocal chords when performing on the reg. Having said that I saw SOAD on 2 consecutive days and he sounded great live, the whole band does in fact. First show was a sideshow on a festival tour the night before the festival show. Small intimate venue called The Palace (RIP) in St Kilda, Melbourne. I loved that fucken show, but my only memory was walking to the speaker stack and putting my ear against it so I could feel the music running through my body. The next day was The Big Day Out festival held at the old Melbourne Showgrounds. I've seen some awesome performances there over the years, such as Metallica and the very first time that I heard Rammstein, what a spectacular stage show that was. On the day System played it was an afternoon time slot, hot sun and a gorgeous blue sky. At the end of one song, the band held a long note or some such and Serj spoke to us in the audience. He told us to look up to the sky, and was saying things like how good it is to be alive right now there and then, truly chilling awe inspiring stuff. Then they segued into Goodbye Blue Sky by Pink Floyd. I feel I got my money's worth those two days.

Yes, but how do you feel about Syndrome of a Down? Great, my wife works with people who have Down syndrome, as well as people with a whole range of deficiencies, physical and mental. I'd say everyone of these people that I have personally met are gentler, kinder and better toilet trained than a lot of people I've come across in the Doom community.

I'm curious to know how on Earth you came to know the restroom efficiency of various members of the Doom community.
You can keep the answer to yourself...but the curiosity is there.

The way certain members display their personality and "wit" it can be quite easy to infer from their posts their lack of integration in decent human society, which implies a lack of basic hygiene amongst other things. Also, if you've seen photos of some of the people who frequent the community, and add the amount of time that they spend online, you know that you wouldn't touch any of them with a ten foot barge pole. To be stereotypical here, nerds fucken stink.
BTW Trace, have you got something to say here about System of a Down or are you here to start making fun of Down syndrome people?

I love System. Psycho is my favorite song by them.
Furthermore about them...anyone here ever check out Amon Amarth's cover of Aerials? It was surprisingly well done.
Also, I offer this little known treat. Tony Iommi and Serj did a collaborative effort called "Patterns" on the "Iommi" album that is absolutely gorgeous.
