I gibbed a shotgun guy with the plasma rifle a few weeks ago! How many values in the RNG table can even do that?

Plasma Rifle can gib a shotgun guy (it easily gibs zombiemen often). Demon bite can gib a shotgun guy. Revenant missile can gib an imp!

When mapping for Heretic there's an unwritten rule that everyone uses but no one talks about; whenever there's a step you take that makes you drop into water you make it JUST tall enough to make a splashing sound.. no more units and no less. If you don't follow this rule with water then chances are your map isn't worth playing. All 5 aspiring Heretic mappers:

21 units. I can forgive people who make shorter steps none splashy, but if you go past 10 units you HAVE to double down and add an extra 11 to make the splash and take full advantage of Heretic's cool new features..

21 units sounds better than constant sploshing as I encounter in eternity 3.31-joel2

I'm triggered by games where water feels "solid" (doom) or is not animated.

I have the impression that some Arch-viles are "resistant" to pain state while others aren't. I observed that approximately 45% of them always stun with 3 consecutive point-blank SSG blasts and 45% never stun. The remaining 10% stun randomly

I once recently saw something with a pain chance I set to 5 (half the chance of a Vile's 10), stun multiple times in a row from another enemy's single hits. Must have been a freak occurrence.

A Caco once got stuck in a spot and then turned into a rapid fire sentry, don't remember which port it happened on, though.

Trying to open a locked door when you don't have the required key results in the DSOOF sound being played instead of the wall hump sound (DSNOWAY). Tested on DSDA-Doom.

To move the automap faster you need to use the run key, even if you have auto-running on.

You can still trigger the exit in a "10-20 damage and exit level" sector if you have invulnerability and below 10 health. I found it out by making this demo in MAP02 :

Well shit, it does. I thought that was just a GZDoom thing or something, and would otherwise just treat the whole map (tag 0 sectors) like a door if you fucked up. I guess that smooths out things for some mappers, but tbh, Carmack should've implemented it more simply as the latter and not baby-proof things. It'd be funny to just see all the Doom levels from unsuspecting mappers just explode into nonsense for no reason. Though maybe that's the very reason for it...

It's things like this which remind me of the foreword by Carmack in the Game Engine Black Book by Fabien Sanglard; "With hindsight and two decades of more skill building, I can think of better ways to implement almost everything".

Pressing the corresponding letters in the menu will take you to that option.
