Do you think that is too cheap? Nihility made keys in the last level only appear on HMP or higher. I think that is a common feature in many 80s and 90s games but I don't know about any wads other than Nihility that do something similar. For my project, I was thinking of having players stuck in a room with a picture of a huge middle finger or a penis when they enter the last level while playing on easy. Do you think this level of bullshittery would be unacceptable?

Meh, it's not a matter of acceptability, it's a matter of cause and consequence. As long as you accept I'd never play a map of yours ever again, why not? Your wad, your rules.

If you do warn players about it when they start new game, this is unacceptable. If you don't, it's twice unacceptable

I can also think of much better ways to fuck the player than just no keys. Ie: you could make on hntr a decoration blocked voodoo doll lowering a sector, making a gap 1px too wide to cross even with rj / sr50. Or require an avj and put no av on hntr.

I think twisted metal 2 prevents access to later sections of the game unless you select medium or hard difficulty. In the more recent reviews (e.g. "does xx still hold up today?") these kinds of barriers are considered an artifact of the past.
Consider that there is nearly unlimited access to games and other forms of content, so gatekeeping players from engaging with content you spent your time working on until they are good enough is kind of a waste of everyone's time.

almost never played anything below uv, maybe hmp on stuff like sunlust and going down that was kinda out of my reach at the time. if i encounter a difficulty spike, what little remains of my ego suggests me to move on to something else instead of lowering the difficulty. so i think you can fuck with hntr imo

I don't know about any wads other than Nihility that do something similar. action doom According to doomwiki, only the true ending is locked behind the hardest difficulty. That's totally different from actually preventing you from finishing a game or wad because you are playing on easy skill level.

Hahahaha Contra 3 did this as well. Pretty great idea tbh. You could have a secret exit in the map which takes place of the real exit on skill 2 and use mapinfo to take the player to a map where the player gets yelled at for being a scrub .

but why? what is wrong with people having fun the way they like? and how can you prevent me from, for example, loading a mod that allows me one-shot any monster with a pistol? or simply turning on god mode, which is even easier.
having different routes for different skills is a completely different thing, though. this may even add the replayability to your mapset. let me finish your map on easy, but open new areas with better weapons and more monsters on hard — and i will prolly replay it on hard, because now i got two games for the price of one.

p.s.: for example, Zynaps for ZX Spectrum has two routes with slightly different middle levels. the route you'll go depends of how good you're playing, but they both converge after some time, and the game can be finished anyway. i was very impressed one day, when i suddenly found myself in a level i've never seen before. it felt like authors rewarded me for my skills, not like authors punished me for not being good enough in their game.

If you haven't played it, I played, and like on map02 or 3 it says you can't go further cuz you're playing on itytd

Anyone feel free to take the skill select from DBP#48. I didn't otherwise penalize the player though. Actually, on easy skills I think I put a friendly T-800 protector at the beginning of each map. And nmap12 gets one on all skills.

Not even remotely fair is is built around nightmare and and I remember it using a few interesting tricks to screw players on the lower skills. I don't remember anything specific though.

If memory serves correct I recall someone posting a mapset on doomworld quite some time back that basically did that, or at least similar. They were challenge speed maps and everyone took it as just a troll wad because they used a bunch of memes or something for textures. Someone was so determined to tear apart the wad that they played on an easier setting complaining about the difficulty without realizing what they were doing to them self while I personally played on UV and enjoyed a few of the maps a bit.

I can recall a few games where the 'easy' campaign is shorter and you need to play 'normal' or 'hard' to get the true ending. Golden Axe I and II off the top of my head, but I feel there are others I've played.

I was just reading Nihility's thread at DW and the author said this was a bug lol. But I think she was trolling. This must be intentional and it fits the theme of the wad perfectly
