E1M9 and E2M8 deserve better than C. E1M9 is a great secret map. Not as much as a surprise as E2M9 and E3M9 but better constructed and splattering the imps in the beginning cage with a rocket launcher is fun, as is blasting them off of the high pillars with the same. Probably one of the better deathmatch layouts too. Cracked Magazine (who unfortunately turned into Groomers since) also used it as a basis for their Martian Mall parody. E4M9 is the most skillfully constructed and detailed of the secret maps but the least fun out of the four (and you're only discussing first three episodes). Imagine someone just played Doom for the first time. They encountered the twin Barons of Hell at the end of E1 and some here and there through E2. Then they come to a place with four dead ones mounted on the wall, while ominous, otherworldly music plays (except PSX version is missing the unique music). They're presented with the biggest stockpile of rockets seen so far and a soulsphere right at the start. Outside they hear one of the biggest roars of any game (and always played at full volume no matter where in the map) and they encounter the toughest single enemy of the classic series, a missile launching biomechanical skyscraper with goat legs, and the only monster powerful enough to gib a player. I look at the whole package of the map and how it presented things altogether. Surprised you gave E3M2 a B as people seem to bash that most of all Petersen's maps. I think it's pretty fun though.

I like E1M9 for fun factor and overall memorability, but I don't think it's on par with the other E1 maps. All boss maps are kind of filler so they get a C automatically. I would say that E1M8 is the best boss map for the combination of unforgettable music + build-up to the boss + twist ending.

E2M9 is a gimmick map. As such it's not bad. From pistol start it's quite challenging too - you have to engage the Barons and the Cacos in infighting to stand a good chance.

I like E4M9 and that's about it. The rest tbh is sort of a blob in my memory. As lame as D2's level design was, at least its maps were more memorable (often for the wrong reasons).

i generally like doom 2's level design, more than doom.wad e2 and e3 for sure pretty weird this is considered a hot take in the doom community tbh, makes me wonder if the zoomzoom invasion has affected some old timers as well. i still hate the antichrist and canceling carmack won't work

I don't have a problem with gimmick maps but E2M9 is a complete waste of a map slot. E3M9 is a decent gimmick map for example.

For me e2m9 was a map where I take some resources, like 200 hp and with it go to e2m6 being a bit overpowered, as it seemed on my first playthru where I got to e2m9.
Slots can't be wasted. With Doom source code Carmack or Romero could accommodate another secret level like E2M10 simply.

I feel this way about Doom 2's maps. There's nothing particularly awful about them but there is also nothing that stands out. They are just painfully average / mediocre
