I don't know how to exactly describe them, but they all have these strong bright colors, extremely choreographed fights, clean design, semi-slaughter combat on UV and (usually) cheerful upbeat songs. And there are a lot them by a lot of different authors, something that I found weird considering that this is a very peculiar, personal and distant style from Doom's design. I wonder how these type of levels got so popular among mappers.

It got popular because a lot of players secretly wish they were playing a 2023 game but with the street cred of a 90s game. They want to play Doom Eternal but feel like they're in the retro crowd, not some Fortnite rejects. This is, coincidentally, the same withered tree whence all modding nonsense (Brutal Doom, Voxel, Siren, Hideous Destructor etc) are born.
Personally I sort of dig the PIPEDARK aesthetics, but SHAWN recolors really need a timeout.

i've been calling it doomworld-core. some of them even know how to do good layout and combat sometimes though

I said about the "final form" When these overdetailed wads stop being cpu intensive due to lots of hitscan calculations - they will be near final

I think only Elementalism map has issues with FPS (because terms "GZdoom" and "optimization" cannot coexist in a single sentence), out of all maps both from OP and 40oz pic.

I wonder how these type of levels got so popular among mappers. they look "different". it is often (not always, mind you, but too often, i'd say) a way to make people notice your map. somehow "wow, it doesn't look like Doom at all!" tend to draw a lot of attention.
