I briefly mapped for an MBF21 project.... then gave up. MBF21 seems cool (DBP42 uses it and yes I submitted a map for it) but when I tried to use it seriously I didn't like it. Can't quite put my finger on why...
John Carmack has said that if he could travel back in time with the knowledge he has now of game engine development, he'd have been able to make the Doom engine 25% faster and have a bunch of extra features (foreword in the Doom Game Engine Black Book). I think it's this engine we should strive for in Doom. Not MBF21.

I thought about "upgrading" my megawad project for like a day, because there was some sort of MBF21 monster pack floating around, but then I actually looked at the available monsters, which were 90% useless, ugly or garbage. Then there was some stupid dual chainsaw in the pack that I didn't want and the only way to actually use the pack was to install some questionable plugin for UDB. Then I also looked at the fact that it will just cause more technical & balance problems, plus I'd have to learn how to handle MBF21. Fuck that shit.

I'm not familiar with MBF21. I saw the last Odamex had dehacked expanded with Decohack which I guess it is like Decolite that might be MBF21 stuff. Playing some horde mode maps online was pretty cool. Somewhere I saw recently that its implemenation of Decohack is now out-of-date compared whatever port originally contains it. Dehacked has been one of the coolest things for allowing editors to change the game's behavior so much long before the source was released and still longer before source ports allowed more of such capabilities for editors. So tons of TC's and partial conversions, map packs, and occasional oddball attempts at different game modes in combination with mapping were made. And it's pretty much universally supported by all ports, even the official Doom Classic with four player splitscreen. Unfortunately by expanding Dehacked features you then have stuff only compatible with that port or ports. At least Odamex is one of the big three server-client online multiplayer ports, with probably the best performance being able to handle a ridiculous amount of players, if you can manage to draw in a good amount of players at some time. You sure don't need as many as Decino got in for his hilarious stress test videos. Before Decorate, DDF was great, but unfortunately networking was broken during its implementation back in dosDoom before it was called EDGE. Some EDGE fork has 2 player splitscreen, so at least that allowed some good co-op play for people in its handful of TC's. Decorate is some really great stuff. Randi Heit started it, but Graf expanded it and made Zscript. While not as much many ports support it, we have a good selection of ports that do, a handful of Z ports plus k8vavoom. We have Zandronum for online multiplayer and you can do multiple instance "splitscreen" with LZDoom (though it's not easy to set up. I got methods down though.) Only GZDoom and LZDoom support zscript far as I know. It seems any Zscript mods are designed for single player only so far. I went to try one in LZDoom but it required a newer version of GZDoom. GZDoom does get the craziest single player mods, though I haven't tried that many of them. I like good combinations of modding and mapping where the implementation of things gets really melded together well, such as some huge map mod I can't remember the name of but was just like C&C Renegade, minus vehicles (which is very similar to an abandoned project I was working on with people and I tried to revamp and continue work after the team leader disappeared but only got so far). Of course a lot of people just use interesting mods to play compatible map packs. Eternity Engine shoehorned some incomplete decorate imitation with more cumbersome syntax into its EDF files, besides it sounding like a penial disorder. Differences and the convoluted syntax just seem to be for the sake of being different. That stuff is a pain in the ass to work with to accomplish the same thing or not as much as decorate can do. Some older fork (with unfortunately some things left unfixed) has splitscreen multiplayer, but I've only used it to view multiplayer vanilla Doom demos, of which I've recorded some video. Anyway, seeing forks of Dehacked do interesting stuff is pretty cool, as long as it's not too much of a pain in the ass. Attracting people to make stuff utilizing it or more source port authors to implement the same thing is not without difficulty. You need something really cool and fun and/or hilarious to get people interested. The attractiveness to source port authors that it's easier than Decorate to implement is understandable. It must have been a major bitch of a juggling job to implement Decorate while keeping full dehacked support and not breaking anything. But of course Decorate and Zscript changes over the years have broken some older mods in newer GZDoom. Zandronum's older Decorate has stayed stable and Dehacked has stayed stable. So far I've done regular universally compatible Dehacked, old dosDoom DDF that's not compatible with any version of EDGE, universally compatible (far as I know) Decorate, and EDF. I did a tiny bit of Boom's BEX dehacked expansion in older Zport work, and a little of the original MBF's expanded dehacked with its mushroom explosion code pointer. I got no problem with people making cool stuff. Too many people want stuff outside their own personal little bubble deleted, banned, and erased. I just suggest maximizing its worth and minimizing its difficulty in using. Everything is competing with a saturation of available stuff of which countless amounts of stuff is really good stuff.

Unless you're into heavy modding, it's literally just Boom except it has instakill floors, you can't push monsters off ledges, and some crusher linedefs that used to not function in Boom now work. A bit too little meat for a new complevel imo but speedrunners like their new shiny toys I guess?

I think I got one of your old dosdoom mods half-working in EDGE once. Homing missile rings a bell? Wonder do I still have it... Cool. In the big weapon patch, there were homing revenant missiles and then there were remote control missiles, and then there was a separate wad of just a remote control pet rock by itself. The remote control stuff was based on an accidental discovery of odd player generated lost soul behavior where it keeps transferring the direction of player's attacks afterwards to the direction of the lost soul-like projectile. The pet rock variation stays on the ground bouncing around.

thing thats interesting to me is that in a way MBF21 feels like a step towards OG zdoom stuff without being zdoom, obviously huge differences in feature set and implementation but kinda feels like it's going up the same hill. wondering if, by the end, it'll be like the 'vanilla/boom -> zdoom -> gzdoom -> boom-based' progression in ideal ports :^P

^ In other words, reinventing the wheel... ketmar has made several great posts criticising MBF21, along with all of the recent vanilla/boom enhancements like UMAPINFO and DEHEXTRA. Although I disagree with him on dehextra, I think that one's neat. It applies the concept of "limit-removing" to Dehacked. The smooth sprites projects by VGA are cool [1] [2].
