Half-Life - that's a big one, but i love the first game, while HL2 is one of my biggest gaming disappointments. It's not a bad game overall, but as HL sequel it falls flat in every way. It's also very overrated, it was chosen as game of the decade, and is still considered one of the best games ever made, which i find to be pretty laughable, because for me HL1 is endlessly more memorable and more fun to play.
My first problem is the betrayal of the original story premise that was set in the first game, the mystery around G-Man, his "employers" and the dimension that lies beyond Xen. Valve didn't have a story set in place with which to continue the first game when they were making it, they just said "fuck it, will think about it later" and released it. At one point of the development of HL2 they were considering the game to take place in space, in multiple locations, like different planets, stations, etc... but they ended up making a very unoriginal "1984" wannabe dystopian plot, which they were even too lazy to set up properly. That's why the game skips 20 years of events, and dumps you directly into the totalitarian regime of the Combine, and as a result, the whole story is an exposition dump, from every character you meet, to set up the new storyline, while all the question and mystery from the original game is completely abandoned.
And speaking of the characters, they all suck ass. They're all extremely flat, and are there just to fill you in about the last 20 years, through boring expository dialogue. Also, Gordon Freeman doesn't work as a silent protagonist in HL2. The reason he worked well in HL1 is because non of the dialogue with the NPC's required you to listen or give a response. In HL2 you have NPC's directly asking Freeman questiouns, and then prented like he's giving them the answer, or make 4th wall breaking jokes.
The level design is not very good as well. The game has an enormous amount of sewers and boring underground flooded areas, which makes me wonder, why no one complains about them, when they complain about every sewer in every other FPS ever made? Also, 30% of the game is vehicle sections which are way overstretched. Ravenholm is just a cliche horror/zombie level which feels out of place in a HL game. There's also an abundance of boring scripted sequences where you're forced to sit in one place and guard a perimeter from waves of enemies, under the same excuse every time, waiting for a friendly NPC to hack a terminals, so you can proceed... In Nova Prospekt alone Alyx Vance dumps your sorry ass three times to hack terminals while you sit one place shooting at the combines. And don't even get me start of the later levels where you storm the streets of City 17 and they give you a squad of NPC's to follow you around and constantly get in your way - worst part of the game! There are also less enemy variety and less guns, compared to HL1... in fact the most memorable and fun guns from the first game are gone. Also the overuse of the physics gimmick, might have been impressive in 2004, but i found it bad back then, and laughable now.
This game sucks so bad as a HL1 sequel that i didn't even bothered with the two episodes that came after, and i'm never going to play them. Why would i? Valve clearly doesn't care about the franchise, so why should i?

Half-life 2 just sucks as a game imo. I didn't play the first HL and yet I still hated HL2. After seeing so many positive reviews I was expecting something more than a mediocre FPS with annoying gimmicks and a shitty cliffhanger ending. It's probably the most overrated game of all time...

Metal Gear Solid: I think I am in the minority here. I loved MGS1, but then I just couldn't bring myself to finish Sons of Liberty so I also never played 3 (I hear that this is apparently the best one but I just don't want to play it after my experience with 2). I ended up finishing MGS4 when I got a ps3 years ago but that game is just a massive cut scene and never picked it up again. After you finally complete it you are rewarded with another full length movie.. I will say that the ending of MGS4 where you are mashing triangle to crawl through that microwave? tunnel and then the final fight at the end on the sub were both epic scenes however. Kind of a weird decision considering that the first game has a lot of talking/cut scenes as well so I might have nostalgia goggles for it but meh. Same here, i played the first two games, quit the second around two thirds into it. The massive dialogue/cutscene dumps were just killing the game for me, even though i think MGS2's gameplay is even better than in the first one. The tanker sequence were you control Snake is the best part of the game, and from what i understand that wasn't a part of the game when it first came out and it was added later? I don't know why, but it is paced better than the Big Shell part, which interupts the gameplay every two steps for more codec exposition dumps, or for awakward dialogue with Raiden's girlfriend. Also, Kojima's writing is very cringey at time (most of the time), either that or i'm too old for it. Like 90% of the time, i don't understand what's the big deal about his writing, the guy is a hack. What he writes just looks like bad cringey anime to me (and i hate anime in general). I loved most of the story in the first game, the general stuff about the Metal Gear... the cringey genetics, twin brother plot i can live without. Speaking of which, MGS1 had a lot of cutscenes and dialogue, but honestly the pacing just feels right in that game. You get do to things in between the cutscenes unlike MGS2 which has 2>1 cutscene/gameplay ratio. And i say this as someone who has no nostalgia for either of these games, i played them for the first time in 2022 on PC. I didn't play 3 and 4 because they are both on console only. I think 5 is on PC, but why would i do this to myself, when the games are too confusing even when you don't skip any releases. However, since you're wondering about the third game, i have watched a playthrough of MGS3 on the highest difficulty, out of curiosity, and from the first 80 minutes of the game, around 70 minutes were cutscenes and codec mumbo jumbo. So keep in mind, the people who say MGS3 is the best, are the same ones who like to gargle with Kojima's seed.

It's actually the opposite, the tanker stuff was the earliest stuff people got to see and play. The whole tanker section was the demo included with Zone of Enders. Everyone thought they were going to play as Snake, which is why the Raiden stuff was so controversial when the game came out.

Thanks for the info, i was under the wrong impression. I thought i saw that in a youtube review, but maybe i just didn't understand it correctly. It was also confusing to me why both parts are separated into different missions and you have to chose which one to play at the start. It felt like the tanker could have been added content, but now i understand and it makes sense.

I have played it, i like it alot... can't say the same for Red Faction 2. When it comes to classic FPS games, i have played almost everything from 1992 up until 2006, which in my opinion is where the genre takes a nosedive with the rise of the slow paced, military shooter, aiming down sights and regenerating health. At that point i turned to other genres of games, like RPGs... i got back to FPS games in recent years where i replayed i alot of the 90's classics and got into Doom for the first time.

Oh, well, I guess I abandoned Heroes of Might and Magic after III. The games just got progressively more elaborate and complex, and I no longer had the time or motivation to invest time in them.
I still dabble with HoMM2 or HoMM3 a bit every once in while (HoMM1, not so much - it's too restrictive). I don't think I ever played 4 or 5, for more than a few minutes.

Tbh I never minded Half-Life 1/2 back when I originally played them. I had a lot more patience for linear games back when this came out. Also played episodes 1 and 2 with episode 2 being by far my favorite. Half-Life 2 does still have some absolutely amazing levels though. I love when you are being harassed by the three legged walker thing in a building later in the game (and the building is being destroyed around you). There are a few other combat bits I really like such as when you are in the prison and have to hold out or while you are in your vehicle driving around blowing shit up.
I did sort of recently (July 5, 2021 according to Steam) try playing Black Mesa again after the hype died down for me after the mod's original release. I really couldn't finish it or even get into it. Half-Life is such a linear game that I just can't anymore (and I played the bits I like as a kid enough to not really want to revisit them - ever).
Kind of makes me afraid to play some of the other games I used to love like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault heh. I am always able to revisit FarCry and the Crysis series because, even though they are linear, they give me loads of freedom to play the game however I want. Crysis especially will always be such a stand out title for me in this regard (at least until the end of the game). Really sucks how they kind of screwed up the remaster of the original (I have only heard this, haven't paid money to buy the game again).
Thinking of this makes me think that I could also add Splinter Cell to the list of games I have abandoned. The original game is AMAZING and I highly recommend anyone to play it if they haven't. I have one of the newer iterations of the game but just dropped it because it was so much more action heavy.

red faction is fine... for the first half. i thought the first far cry could git fucked after a couple of levels, at least i finished hl2 but didn't like it either. i dropped allied assault too, it's like an endlessly gayer rtcw/soldier of fortune. i think my cutoff for fps games is earlier than 2004

Oh.. they remade Demon Souls.. which means I might need a ps5 after all.. fucking hell. You could go the emulation route to play the original since the remake is a bit different. I've used rpcs3 to play it since I prefer the old art style. Ran good on my old under powered pc. Plus being able to upscale the resolution and turn off motion blur are really nice. Don't know if rpcs3 emulates any of the online functionality though since I always played souls games in offline mode. I remember a glitch that required a mod for certain shields and weapons to appear on your character. I think it may have been added into the emulator itself at some point if I'm remembering right. From my understanding it was actually the result of the devs exploiting something with the ps3 hardware to not have to render the items but for some reason they would still be displayed. Weird voodoo stuff that didn't make sense to me when I read it. You can play Demon's Souls online on RPCS3 thearchstones.com/

I never really followed franchises. At most I'll play a sequel if it's close enough to a game that I liked. Doom -> Doom II Heretic -> Hexen Zelda 2 -> 1 (went backwards here) Ninja Gaiden 1 -> 2 Space Quest 1 -> 2 (I started 3 and lost interest, maybe I'll try again someday) RPGs like Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, I only played the very first game. That was enough. Anyway why does Final Fantasy have a sequel. Says right in the name it's the last one.

You should play the SNES Zelda. The two for 8-bit NES and that one are the only ones I played totally through and beat. I got at least freaking five others that I lost interest in sooner or later because they're not nearly as good as those first three and have too much puzzle BS with too little action.
Also the BS Zeldas for the Japanese Satellite add-on for SNES/SFC have been hacked into complete games. I recommend them too.

Never play the original gameboy zelda (waking of the windfish or some shit)? It's genuinely my favourite of the original era. It's just fun, and actually had a surprisingly evocative plot.

Don't think I ever was that gamingly passionate to renounce a particular entry let alone an entire series for whatever conceivable reason.
Getting attached to electronic entertainment on such a level seems like a beta move to me. Then again, I'm asserting such in a place full of critters that have been wasting yonks worth of braincells on modding a thirty years old Joseph Smith simulator so.. yeah, better save the rest of that stand-up routine for another crowd.
Anyhow. If I was to scrape the bottom of the barrel in order to somewhat meet this thread's criteria and post something stupid, the closest fit would prolly be Dark Souls II after the (now almost a decade old) 1.06 patch.
What a blunder that was...
Got home from work wanting to sit down, relax and produce some insta-poison farts with your Bat Staff? Srry, can't do that on stage anymore chief.
How about some sweet-ass 360-no-scope with Akimbo Avelyns? Yeah.. don't bother, you better off throwing urns now.
Wrath of the Gods? More like Wack of the Goof.
Flame Weapon? Santier's? Nope, all gone. Literal 'look what they done to my boy' levels of nerfing. You get the picture. Horrid shit. It was 9/11 all over again.
The weird part was that it didn't seemed like a case of FromSoft bending over backwards to casuals. Those builds were pretty much like coke in the 80s; all the hip kids were doing it, so where's the issue ese? None(!), I tell u. Just absolute flabbergastion, really.
Could they've been catering towards redditards with such "adjustments"? To the very people that incoherently complains about every-single-thing and leave the game regardless just after a couple of weeks? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe aliens. We'll never know for sure.
But in the end I saw the truth. Trey Parker was right all along. Japanese people ain't got no soul. They're just a bunch of chaosmongering principalities inflaming the very pyres of the cosmos while their squinting reptilian eyeholes watch the fireworks as the world burns (or something along those lines).
Yet, you see, in spite of such grave tribulations - I survived! Remained solid, didn't divorced myself from the game and, in fact, we have had many honey moons afterwards. Tho I can't deny that the above epiphany sour any future prospect of me throwing them shekels to acquire the expansions. Lasting to this very day.

>How so As disclaimer: be aware that you're messing with the wrong nigga. 4 starters, I don't need to provide a single speck of rationale to why I think you're gay other than to simply imply such in the above meme + I don't mean gay as in ' slightly gay' but rather as in ' you bouncing on your boyfriend's dick as we speak' kind of gay. There's nothing you can do or say that would make me change my mind, even.. even if you were the Top G, Mr. Tate, I'd still think you are nuttin but a luv-u-long-time, sucky-sucky gay-ass numbnut. That being said, nothing against you. As for leaving the current Epstein Shang Tsung's Fantasy Island installment, in the end, I'll grant that it's a personal call but your excuse for doing so is utterly retarded (and gay, these are facts of nature btw). It's known that fighting gaymes holds the privileged position of being alike to pizza - even if shitty, like Hyper Dimension's input lag levels of shit, it's still pretty tasty. My totally unrebukable argument to back such up is no other than the principle of embarrassment, however, since you clearly have a peanut brain let me put it in layman terms: ・ 69% of the fun present in digitally beating someone to a pulp is exactly that, being, gettin' away with assault (or murder) without charges ・・ 21% lies in the spectacle (gore, tits, big black scythes, etc.) ・・・ and only (whopping) 10% comprises quality coding wut you make no sense here well that's true but bear with me. While in the domains of the subjective, the vast majority will firmly afirm that Turbo is the superior ( S) SFII entry. Ok. I can tolerate that. Still it'll not detract from the fact that given my very own preferences: I find such a taste preposterous. I much rather have my chances w/ a broken-ass Dictator on CE than to feel grief-stricken by what they've done to my all-time fav hugger, Mr. Claw, on Turbo. Once you had to earn your repute as the best spanish-ninja in the hood but then CUCKPCOM made him a cheap-ass screamin' edgelord that everyone and their mother can master and that was way way too much for me to take. I still remember, back when I was just a young felino latino.. the first time I ever saw him.. that strong indepedent white male fiercely harassing poor chink Chun in the animated movie. I was struck'd by wonder and said to my dadda "Dad, that's what I want to be when I grow up". Those fuckers gave me a reason to dream you know? To seek the unseekable and then they plucked it away from me by milking the game. Never forgive, never forget. Anyways. If you're in need of something to inject back a little bit of enthusiasm for the series, look no further than Special Forces. If you manage to survive that pixelated stage-five cancer, you can pretty much deal with anything that WokeRealms Studio throws at you. Now, if you excuse me I have to further booze myself up cuz my team is about to make soccer history. Catch ya later gator. 〖 edit: yup they've won, my hangover's already gone.. exquisite outcome for everyone. Hallelujah! 〗

I can't remember anything about this game that I found genuinely good. The gunplay is boring, vehicle sections are meh and the retarded dialogues where other characters talk to you and Gordon never says anything in response and yet they act like he does are annoying as shit. It would work fine if your character was some rando and the game world never acknowledged your existence or if there was some shitty dialogue system, but it's not the case here and that shit ruins the immersion for me. Also one of the reviews I read hyped up Ravenholm so much, saying shit like it's almost like a horror game of its own, I ended up being really disappointed when I got to this part of the game because in reality it turned out to be a short SPOOPY section where you're getting less weapons and ammo than usual. Other than that the only things separating this game from other FPS games from the 00s are shitty gimmicky "riddles" where you have to use the gravity gun or whatever it's called to progress and I guess the graphics were pretty good at the time.
