When a game I know and love comes out with a new sequel or periodic updates, sometimes i can tell when the developers take on a new management style or distinctively have lost sight of what the game was originally about. A true fan of any game could. It doesnt always happen but when it does it sucks and can ruin the game for me.
Were you ever really invested in a game franchise and had to give it up because of the way it has evolved (or devolved) over the course of its life?
What was the dealbreaker that make you sure you were done with it, and how hard was it for you to give up on it for good?

Fallout, Fallout 2, fuck off, bethesda. ;-) Same. Fallout 1 & 2 were always favorites of mine. Bethesda is easily the first that comes to mind. For me it also applies to the elder scrolls and doom. I still enjoy Morrowind and daggerfall, now that I've actually played it thanks to the unity port. I like actual RPGs with some depth. Clearly not the direction they took things. I don't like the newer dooms because the art design, music and gameplay just don't appeal to me. Diablo is probably the other biggest one. Love the first two but 3 was the furthest thing I wanted from a Diablo game and I won't even bother looking into the new one. In most of these cases it's generally the dumbing down of things in pursuit of mass market appeal or milking a franchise by slapping its name on a game that could have easily been something entirely different.

Well, when the Mortal Kombat series went console-only, I had to abandon it, because I only play games on the PC. Then when they came back to the PC I happily started playing the series again.

Resident Evil after CODE Veronica. Civilization after V. That being said, the Resident Evil 2 remake rekindled the passion. It was a worthy of the original. I liked the Resident Evil 3 remake but it wasn't as good as the original.

I am less interested in Elder Scrolls these days. I might have come later by playing a lot of Oblivion, then everyone hated that one but became to hyped on Skyrim (oh the memes) which I wasn't much drawn to it. Then I look back at the classics Morrowind or Daggerfall. I've played more Daggerfall, especially with Daggerfall Unity. Now, if there is an announcement of a new Elder Scrolls or other Bethesda franchise, I am a bit uninterested.

Duke Nukem Forever - thanks Randy and George, you've actually managed to kill the entire franchise. Fallout 76 - it's not an absolute garbage, I've had some fun time there, but it's not a game, it's a buggish online DLC for Fallout 4. Why they've made a nice online game with TESO but completly failed here is beyond me. Quake - give me some single player action, I want to kill some stroggos dammit. Prey - I still don't understand why they called a completely unrelated 2017 game the same name as a nice shooter from 2006. I want to play as Tommy once again.

I beat Oblivion once and while I had some fun I didn't want to replay it because of the goddamn autoleveling. Never cared about Skyrim, tried to play it but had some problems with setting up the video settings. When I changed everything to my preferred settings, the game just didn't load so I just deleted it lol.

Hehe, everyone mentions the autolevelling. Didn't bother me, but I know it's cringe to move around the world and the bandits you killed yesterday, appear again with golden armorsets

Hehe, everyone mentions the autolevelling. Didn't bother me, but I know it's cringe to move around the world and the bandits you killed yesterday, appear again with golden armorsets Surprisingly I didn't care much about it when I was playing Fallout 3... But I was a teen when I played it so I had a shitload of free time on my hands and by the time I reached the final level even enclave soldiers and supermutants didn't pose much of a threat. Hell, even deathclaws felt like low-tier enemies (they could still kill me in a few hits though, but I always carried lots of stimpacks and super stimpacks to counter that) and I had some really powerful guns whereas in Oblivion even the max level spells/weapons don't do shit to high-level enemies. It made me feel like I've spent so much time grinding for XP to get new spells and shit was pointless and I didn't want to install mods so my next playthrough would be more bearable. So I uninstalled it and didn't felt the urge to replay it ever since. Also Morrowind's combat system is godawful and put me away from even trying to get past the first few quests. I feel like I should give it another try after I saw Sseth's review where he showed that you can do some crazy ass stuff by using exploits but I think it'd make me feel like I'm using cheats lol.

CittyKat112 Oblivion was the prime example of how not to do level scaling. An Entire ecology wiped out because you went up one level and trash mobs suddenly started using high tier equipment. Morrowing is a tough one to get into for a lot of new players, especially ones that didn't grow up on classic crpgs. I actually prefer it's combat to how they tried to handle it in the newer ones since to hit rolls and such were in all the crpgs I played back in the day. You really have to stick to you're build to get your chosen skills up, especially early on and weather the grind to get to the godlike stuff. Or simply download the sourceport Openmw and find a few qol mods for some tweaks. At a base level I would consider the ones that make all attacks hit (better balanced combat) and the stamina regen like the latter entries (regen and stamina overhaul) so you're not constantly having to rest after running a few feet. Those two mods alone should make it infinitivaly more playable to most people. The community patches are probably a good idea to. Openmw: openmw.org/en/modding-openmw.com/lists/

I feel like I should give it another try after I saw Sseth's review where he showed that you can do some crazy ass stuff by using exploits but I think it'd make me feel like I'm using cheats lol. I know, that's why I had a hard time getting into it (and I still haven't played it as much). People say "it's that RPG element with chance to hit" but for me it wasn't it, because also in Daggerfall you might hit and fail many times. But in daggerfall when you fail to hit, you hear a clank of your weapon, or maybe there is something at the edge, you have a visual or audio cue. In Morrowind I was very puzzled because I was looking down with my mouse and tried to hit some bug, but nothing happened. But there wasn't even a visual/audio cue to tell me I tried attack but chance failed. So, I thought I must be aiming wrong or not too close. And because in both games when you start, you might have something like 1/10 chance to hit or depends on the weapon and character, but it's that low, I would repeat many times and think I must be doing something wrong, I might be attacking empty air for all I know. But at least in Daggerfall you had the audio cue I think (the visual cue for hitting would be some blood and nice sound), there was something to tell you you are not swinging in the air, you are attempting to hit something, just didn't land. It's so weird and awnward in morrowind, even if the Daggerfall controls with the swinging seem awkward, but at least there I get something and when you do hit you get excited.

And now I realize, the audio clang must only be happening on humans or skeletons and other humanoid. It might still not be the case with rats and bats, when you swing your weapon and fail to hit (which is very high at the beginning), nothing happens, so you don't know if your mouse view was on point. I think rats/bats were silent too, unless hit.

optimus Daggerfall certainly had better audio feedback. The clanks and such were generally against non-animal type enemies that wouldn't be using armor or weapons so it sounded like swords clashing or hitting shields. There was also the player grunting when missing. It sounds more like actual sword fights happening. Morrowind could probably have benefited from something as simple as that. Aside from that the actual gameplay is pretty much the same though.

Starcraft when 2 came out Most mainline COD games after Black ops 1 or 2. Main exceptions being 2019 MW and its direct sequel. Ultima after what EA ended up doing to 8. Fallout (for now) after the debacle that was FO76 at launch. Street Fighter games after 4. Battlefield was fine until the fuck-up that was 4, then a mixed bag in the form of Hardline, and then anything after 1 for PC and 8th gen consoles (the WW1-focused entry), was a fuckload of shit, especially BF2042. Never played WoW, but practically all hopes of me playing that MMORPG were Dashed with the corporate idiocy and hypocrisy of Blizzard not long after Mists of Pandaria Expansion. Killzone after "Killzone Mercenary" on the PS Vita. 3 was largely bland at best, from what I've heard.
Final Fantasy games after FF X.

World of Warcraft: absolutely loved BC and then really hated the direction Blizzard took Wrath - the writing was on the wall with the lfg system. I did have fun dismounting entire raids and watching them fall to their deaths as they were trying to fly into Naxx using blastwave though.
Fallout: luckily missed Fallout 76 because I just don't pre-order games on principle after the disappointment that was Age of Conan. Pre-ordering Age of Conan wasn't all bad though.. I got to see all of the 'mature adults' who were saying 'finally a mature mmo all of the kids will be absent' standing around a female npc whose armor was glitching out showing off her breasts (because there was nudity in the game). Anyways I haven't trusted a Bethesda game since.. miiiight try out Starfield when it is dirt cheap but I still kind of doubt it.
God of War: I don't like the direction they have taken the game so I have just avoided investing in a console to play the new ones.
Final Fantasy: I can't deal with these games anymore after suffering through the hell that was FF13.
Souls games: I decided I should have an opinion on all of these games over Christmas so I am going to give this series another chance and try 3 and Bloodborne.. which means I need to buy a ps4 (I have no interest in other console games so not paying for a ps5). I liked Elden Ring so maybe this one will be inverted after trying them out.. who knows. Oh.. they remade Demon Souls.. which means I might need a ps5 after all.. fucking hell.
Turok: I tried to like 3 but it was just too linear compared to 2. Like 1's and 2's levels a lot more (especially the platforming in 1). Kind of redeemed itself with Evolution but then the newest game killed the franchise for me.
Far Cry: I couldn't finish 4 because it was just the same system rehashed after 3. Now I hear they are implementing current day into the newest ones which means I will just be missing them.
Resident Evil: I loved this franchise until 6. I wasn't ever interested in the fps direction these games went in to really try out 7+. The RE remake on the gamecube (still my favorite).. RE2 and its remake.. RE4 and its remake.. to a much lesser extent the og RE3 (but was never was a big fan of Nemesis) and Code Veronica.. absolutely all in my top list of best games of all time.
Metroid: Other M exists.. not sure my face has untwisted out of the pretzel from the insane cringe in that game.. I haven't played Dread because I don't have a Switch so it might be worth checking this one out and removing it from the list.
Starcraft: loved the original and especially Brood War. Starcraft 2 is so cringe that I just can't finish it after experiencing Heart of the Swarm.
Diablo: 1 is pretty fun, Lord of Destruction however is my favorite expansion of all time for any game. Then 3 happened and it just killed the franchise for me (real money auction house).. then 4 happened which I avoided like the plague. Meh it isn't like 3 is a terrible game after they fixed the items and removed the auction house but it still isn't anywhere close to Lord of Destruction for me. I still need to play the new content for 2 remastered but have so many other things on my plate that I haven't been able to get to it.
Meh probably more but I am not going to spend more time thinking about it and becoming more depressed =/.

Yeah 4 is kind of in a weird spot. I never played the fps generation of Fallout for the story/characters but rather for the exploration of the world after nuclear destruction. I still like 4 because of the exploration aspect. The minutemen can go to hell though.

Oh thought of a few more.
Metal Gear Solid: I think I am in the minority here. I loved MGS1, but then I just couldn't bring myself to finish Sons of Liberty so I also never played 3 (I hear that this is apparently the best one but I just don't want to play it after my experience with 2). I ended up finishing MGS4 when I got a ps3 years ago but that game is just a massive cut scene and never picked it up again. After you finally complete it you are rewarded with another full length movie.. I will say that the ending of MGS4 where you are mashing triangle to crawl through that microwave? tunnel and then the final fight at the end on the sub were both epic scenes however. Kind of a weird decision considering that the first game has a lot of talking/cut scenes as well so I might have nostalgia goggles for it but meh.
Red Faction: I love the first game.. sort of liked the second.. and just didn't care enough to try out the third game. The first game's mechanic of environmental destruction was so much fun when I was younger. My friends and I played multiplayer for hours digging tunnels and trying to flank each other using this mechanic. Also loved the rail gun in the original. Didn't like the campaign of the 2nd game nearly as much as the first but I used to love playing multiplayer with the bots when I was younger.
Alien Vs. Predator: The original and especially 2 were so much fun. Multiplayer was amazing (especially in 2) and the original's marine campaign was probably the single most frightening video game experience for me as a kid. Playing as both the predator and the alien was a blast in these games. The more recent third game just didn't capture the magic of the original two (even though the alien campaign in the third game is still a lot of fun). There is a multiplayer mode in 1 where you just kill waves of aliens that I would play while blasting AC/DC to.. such fun memories.

Deus Ex because I beat the first game like 10 times, also beat some of the mods a few times and I think I've played all of the big boy mods for it... I had to abandon it because it seemed like I've seen everything the first game has to offer and other games in the series are kinda meh. Invisible War is dumbed down buggy trash for console gamers, Human Revolution is extremely mediocre compared to the original and I didn't play Mankind Divided because my PC won't be able to run it.
Another series I had to abandon was Operation Flashpoint/Armed Assault. Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis was super fun and imo it's one of the best FPS games ever made, it made feel like I'm actually taking part in a war despite shitty graphics and non-existent ballistics. Admittedly I didn't play Dragon Rising because it didn't have anything to do with the original game and from what I heard Codemasters turned it into yet another shitty military shooter. After that I tried playing ArmA games but I could only beat the first game. It was very meh and it had a shitload of bugs. I couldn't play the second one because finding it on torrents was a pain in the ass and I used to have a pirate copy of ArmA 3 but it was bought in 2013 and back when ArmA 3 was released it didn't have a campaign (as far as I remember you had to BUY campaign chapters for it because they still were in development lol) so I could only play single player missions and I wasn't really interested in them.
Gears of War/Halo series because I don't wanna buy new Xbox and idk if the one I have (Xbox 360) is even working anymore. Plus
Fallout because I can't play FO4 for the same reasons I can't play Mankind Divided and I guess it's even shittier than FO3 when it comes to RPG mechanics.

Oh.. they remade Demon Souls.. which means I might need a ps5 after all.. fucking hell. You could go the emulation route to play the original since the remake is a bit different. I've used rpcs3 to play it since I prefer the old art style. Ran good on my old under powered pc. Plus being able to upscale the resolution and turn off motion blur are really nice. Don't know if rpcs3 emulates any of the online functionality though since I always played souls games in offline mode. I remember a glitch that required a mod for certain shields and weapons to appear on your character. I think it may have been added into the emulator itself at some point if I'm remembering right. From my understanding it was actually the result of the devs exploiting something with the ps3 hardware to not have to render the items but for some reason they would still be displayed. Weird voodoo stuff that didn't make sense to me when I read it.
