Ha, I literally wanted to do the same yesterday but was afraid that I would violate the TOS and get b4nn3d. :]
Man, I don't think I've ever even acknowledged the existence of such a thing as terms of service, let alone been legit afraid of violating it. Who reads that anyway, ffs?

I wasn't familiar with Steve Shives until just now. I don't know much about him. Interestingly, I did watch that South Park episode in question. I remember seeing it on YouTube.
To be honest, I think after about the seventh time they repeated the same "girls are funny too" joke I just stopped watching. The live viewer count started to drop too. It's funny at times, but quickly gets annoying. Humor is subjective though, so whatever. I just stopped tuning in, simple as that.
However, I think Steve raises an interesting point at the 1:40 mark. And it goes beyond just humor. "You're a fool if you care about stuff" is something I'm starting to witness quite often myself. If his concern is an observation that frequently indulging in this sort of comedy might be making people more narrow-minded and quick to laugh at/tune out reality and serious topics, I might have to agree. I see where he's coming from.
I am not going to defend anything else Steve Shives stands for. But his criticism of South Park seems based on a valid concern over the constant parodying of serious topics. Don't get me wrong, I love cartoons and parody as well. But this happens in more places than just South Park.
It gets to a point where even I'm sick of seeing everything turned into a giant comedy show. Is viewing too much vapid TV making some people dumber? It's a possibility. Tune into something often enough, and the underlying tonal message will eventually begin to sway your mind and attitude. That includes Bearing, other right YouTube drama channels, left YouTube drama channels, comedic news, etc. How about obsessing over video games to the point of not caring and being uninformed? We're all guilty of this, to some extent.
What is more appealing to the average person? Viewing boring history videos and scientific documentaries, or watching a funny show? Investing time into leisure activities, and games? That bubble is more appealing I would say. We all do it. It's normal. We're emotional beings too, which is why the media loves to appeal to quick feelings over facts. Cue war propaganda. Images of dead kids, pleading for help, etc.
I'm not saying that South Park should be censored in any way. Still, perhaps it is fair to critique the comedy in a different light?
Bearing would respond to what I'm saying by calling me "offended" or having "hurt feelings", but that's not the point. He can say whatever he wants, but at least address the real concern made! Immediately calling Steve a "thin skinned pussy" over the issue just seems like an ignorant remark. Not everyone has the same sense of humor, Bearing. How is that a comeback? And humor isn't even the entire point.
How is Bearing in the right here? He comes across as the obnoxious one to me, not the other way around. Even if Steve *is* overreacting.
So, a sizable chunk of the right wing community consists of annoying trolls who constantly spew retarded shit like "remove kebab" and parade around Pepe the Frog avatars? No wonder Steve is annoyed by them. I'm annoyed by them. It's a trigger meme, perpetuating the trend of being "hip and cool" to use politics as your display image/name these days but *heaven forbid* someone notices it and calls you out on it. Gasp, they must be an offended leftist! Let's laugh at them, and troll them some more! Come on.
This is what gets the left and right hating each other in the first place. This incessant back and forth trolling makes people eat each other alive. Both sides are guilty of it. Sure it's funny. But it solves precisely fuck all. And actually makes coming to any sort of understanding impossible. Now it becomes a game for views. It's a comedy spectacle, and we're all either participants or observers. These YouTube channels thrive off of the created ensuing drama. Same with various news websites. I understand that videos like this are a form of humor, and they have every right to exist and be monetized. But I confess that I do find it misleading.
A new mentality is now being created: the SJWs versus the alt-righters. Two political extremes, neither of which represent the normal reality of each political side. That's dangerous, and it leads to incidents like what we saw recently in Charlottesville. The clashing of two ideological extremes, which leads to violence and crackdowns on free speech and civil liberties. The radical left will continue to physically attack and censor ideas in the name of "combating fascism", but it is their own twisted perceived interpretation of fascism. Meanwhile, the alt-right just keeps pushing buttons with needless baiting. Some of which is genuinely racist. All in the name of hilarious trolling.
The media takes it all and thrusts the issues into the limelight. Often with little facts omitted here and there. Are you surprised to see left sources label ANTIFA as nothing more than "counter protesters"? Is that *really* all they were? Or is there something more going on here?
The whole thing is a clusterfuck. Holy shit, I need to stop and lie down now. Going to bed, good night. [has-been ramblings rip rush sleepy time hurr]

I actually didn't watch the episode in question, but it was during or close to that whole Ghost Busters saga, the actresses Amy Schumer and that other one that Milo said looks like an ape were doing "stand up comedy" at the time where they'd only talk about their vaginas, vagina farts, getting dick and stealing jokes while the media was straight up telling us that "it's funny", and Amy blaming trolls on the internet for her stupid netflix thing for failing. Steve Shives got specific during the end of the first vid because he wants everyone he disagrees with to be kicked off the internet to the point where he and his friends shamed and sent emails to an organization in an effort for them to kick Sargon and Armored Skeptic off their panels and barred from making speeches, citing Rational Wiki as evidence. The point of contention wasn't really whether that was a good episode or not. I don't really watch South Park either, tbh.

The point of contention wasn't really whether that was a good episode or not. I know. Did you read what I was saying? You make some good points, and that video you posted makes some good points. But there is a lot to consider here. First, I feel like Bearing didn't properly address the concern Shives made about entertainment shows changing the way people view serious topics. That was the bigger issue. Instead, Bearing just responds with the usual "haha you're a pussy lol" which gets annoying really fast. Is that not a growing problem? In a way, Bearing proved Shives' point. Look at the hive-mind mentality some of these political YouTube channels foster. Are viewers becoming unable to think for themselves? Something happens in the news and suddenly it's "ahh, what does Styx have to say about this? What does this Sargon have to say about this?" Instead, how about finding the original story and decide what YOU have to say about it. Instead of playing follow the leader. That's the issue I have with commentators. Yes, you can learn a lot from them. But it's manipulative as well. And it needs to be, because boring programming doesn't make money. The drama and the views do. Sorry if it sounds like I'm directing this message towards you personally, I don't mean it that way. Also, the issue extends beyond the internet. How about Stephen Colbert? Saturday Night Live? Last Week Tonight with John Oliver? The Daily Show? It's too much. All of this is changing the way people think and act towards dissenting viewpoints. Vordakk made a great post a while back about the growing number of people tuning into these comedic relief satire programs for their news. That, together with shows like South Park making fun of everything. It starts to add up. Who wants to take things seriously anymore? I'm passionate about this, because I believe it's important to preserve free speech. People should be allowed to use YouTube to freely speak their mind, and I disagree with Shives and others on the left who want to censor ideas. It's important to keep monetization opportunities open to all content creators. That preserves viewpoints on both sides, and avoids creating a biased viewing platform. However, I understand why some people feel that trolling is becoming a serious problem. I've experienced harassment myself. It makes me realize just how many folks are simply *unwilling* to listen to what you have to say. That's disappointing. The ignorant leftists respond with blanket censorship (that is usually taken too far), while the ignorant righties respond with trolling. And yet neither side seems willing to listen to the other. Well, some are. But not enough. For many, it's suddenly 'cool' to look for the next new person to laugh at. "What stupid thing did Shives say today?" Let's ignore the fact that he makes some good points here and there. Bad ones too, granted. You know, wouldn't his message have a lot less power if people just ignored him? His channel only averages about 2,000 views per video. Even at his peak popularity, 50k views per video. Ironically, all of this drama and teasing has given him the vocal power he so clearly wants to have. Now he's seen as a victim. I find it funny how 'trolls' on the right want to preserve free speech, yet they use their free speech to post idiotic nonsense that further damages the cause. How do you expect YouTube to respond to constant harassment and "kill yourself" bandwagon trains? That's not a productive way to address a problem. People seem to be resorting to personal attacks and insults over a disagreement, instead of attacking the ideas themselves. Stupidity is the root problem here. I'm sick of it all, quite honestly. It becomes especially dangerous when unnecessary liberal hate speech protection laws (see: Bill C-16 in Canada) start passing. But hey, if people want to filter the comment section on their own Tube and Twitter page, that's fine. They have the right to do so. That's entirely separate from suggesting that other content creators (and their viewing audience) need to be silenced. It's also separate from legislation that forces people to say things against their will, lest they risk losing their job. The latter two things are pretty concerning. Anyways, what's changing? What's the cause? I don't think anyone knows for sure. Which is why I find the topic fascinating. There's so many angles to consider. Is it the vapid TV programming? Is it the gender identity politics? Is it because we award points to people who are offended? What's causing this shift in thinking? I think I've made my point.

It's hard to make an objective opinion about a video when you're hearing through the filter of whoever chopped it up and made commentary over it.
I've been bored with South Park in this recent season. It's mostly because they switched over to a continuous episodic structure, which I don't think is working very well for that type of show. It was much better when each episode was centered around a different topical event. I think the whole thing with the twitter trolls, PC Principal, and the election could have been condensed to single episode. Imagine an entire season about the smug hybrid drivers or Mr. Garrison's trans-surgery. I bet that would get really tired out too.
South Park has always been actively trying to push boundaries since the very beginning, and they've gotten themselves to a point where it's impossible for them to create something outrageous anymore. They'll go for anything.

It's hard to make an objective opinion about a video when you're hearing through the filter of whoever chopped it up and made commentary over it. Exactly! This is why I prefer articles. A well sourced article will always link to sources. Then you can pull open the source, study the inner clockwork of it all, and come to your own conclusions. I used to listen to a lot Styxhexenhammer666. He's a really smart guy and is incredibly well spoken. However, he never links to his sources. Or if he does, it's only one or maybe two. He doesn't want his viewers to see where he gets all of his information from. It's sneaky, because he wants to see you come to him in order to think. Instead of thinking for yourself. I've stopped watching commentators altogether. Well, podcast debates and interviews are different I think. Because that's just more like an informal chat session to get to know someone, as opposed to actual news. If you know what I mean. When comedy starts replacing actual quality reporting as a source of news for people, you have a problem. Not that there's anything wrong with making a joke of something. But I mean, at least try to find the original story.

I get kind of irked by the prevalence of sarcasm. A lot of people depend on it, because it's a way of expressing a contrary opinion without giving the opposition any ammunition to work with. Like when you write a detailed explanation about why something someone said is wrong, that's like attacking their argument with a tank. It's strong, the danger is clear, and if it has a weakness, you can defend yourself from it. When someone uses sarcasm, it's like poisonous gas. A sarcastic statement means whatever the interpreter wants it to mean, and because it's intentionally satirical, it doesn't express any honest feeling or opinion towards anything and just stalls the conversation and wins allies to your side.
It's effective and can be a lot of fun, but I often see people I've never met before open up with sarcasm, so I have no idea of knowing where they are coming from. Such is the case in that Steve Chives video. I don't know who Steve Chives is or who the commentator is, but they both seem retarded to me because they're both speaking as if they are really well known and the listener has been following all their videos since the beginning. I don't have time for that. The assumption that one's internet persona has been this long continuous string that everyone has been following their entire internet presence is a trap I see a lot of people fall into, which is probably why there is so much explosive friction between unlike people. They can't wrap their own heads around why the other person doesn't get what they're talking about.
Also this tea I'm drinking tastes like dirt. I legitimately believe they scooped up dirt and put it in a teabag.

I found that post really thought provoking, RUSH. I understand that it's a shame to see serious topics get reduced to a bullshit parody over and over but I think this is just a result of many people having many different opinions on what even is important coupled with media saturation, that is to say all these people with all their views and what is and isn't serious all having a direct line to the rest of the world. There are far more positive things that result from modern communication/YouTube/etc but like everything there are also negative side effects and I think this is one of them.
For whatever it's worth, Bearing has a history with Steve and the obnoxious aspect is being played up here for laughs and views - Steve has some absolutely insane views on things including supporting different sets of rights for people based on race, gender, etc - The dude is a total clown and backs down from every attempt at civil discourse. He has lived in an echo chamber for so long that others have realized it's pointless trying to actually reason with him so they don't reply to him in a serious or civil way any more. Not an excuse really, but it at least gives a little context.
EDIT: I also have a huge problem with news coverage. Not people who parody or comment on it or whatever, but the coverage itself. 10% reporting on what's happening, 90% speculation, baseless conclusions and frankly insane ramblings all to push whatever them and their shareholders want the masses to think, not just on FOX but every single outlet these days. Every last one of them. Subtracting the spin is honestly harder than ever before, you have to discount so much of the bullshit that is peddled to you no matter where you get it from to get a reasonable perspective on anything they cover. NEVER trust a talking head or take them at their word, EVER.

Not an excuse really, but it at least gives a little context. Ahh alright, the situation makes a lot more sense now when you word it this way. Still though, you have to look at it from our point of view too. Like with me and 40 you know... an outside observer who isn't up to date on the drama is just going to look at that video and not have any clue what to think. I tried looking into the situation before I made those two big posts but I couldn't find much information besides even *more* cut up clips of the guy being bashed in similar ways. So I wasn't sure what to think. I went to his channel, but he has way too much content to sit through. His most popular videos looked like typical "Top Five" channels. Not too out of the ordinary, aside from tackling some touchy topics. I can just imagine a YouTube staff member coming along and seeing those Bearing videos. Their head is going to explode. Where to begin? Seriously though. To an outside observer it doesn't look good at all, which is probably why we're seeing more censorship on the site that seems to primarily target conservatives and other dudes on the right. Not because the right "is evil!!!" or anything like that, but because the situation has escalated to a point where it's impossible to reason with far-leftists anymore. I think that's where we are at politically though. It's always got to be a war now. Maybe I went a little too far with my criticism of all commentators in general. I know lots of them are good, and informative. But I dunno, so many of them reach levels of comedic bias so strong you may as well just watch Jimmy Fallon for your daily news. Even the ones who aren't comedy based can be misleading as well, because you have nothing to show for what you learn. What is your source? Oh, some guy talking on YouTube. That isn't a source, lol. For example, you get into a debate. "Oh, I heard him say this!" But where is your source? You have no link, no study, and unless you looked it up at the time you watched the video, the original source might be long gone. Who is to say the commentator is telling the truth, if you don't fact check every two sentences? Meh, just my take on it all.

Christ, where do I begin? I don't have time to proof read this to tone it down even further than what I originally had. Even random dudes I added on Steam through playing Vermintide know him so I took for granted that not everyone knows him... regardless.. there's a reason I (shit)posted this in the SHOUTBOX with "anyone else here know Steve Shives?" and not "hey guys here is Steve Shives!".. there's also a reason Kraut posted his video on his shitposting account... Bearing isn't a political commentator, but he's already dismantled Steve's argument over a hundred times (everyone has) he never advertised himself as a political commentator but rather as "an Australian cunt who swears a lot and likes to rant about shit that pisses him off", people in different parts of the world have a way more rough way of speaking (rip Joe Ilya), Australia and Britain are the only two places where people who are strangers say "ahh fuck off mate" and laugh as a goodbye after exchanging a few words.. his appeal is that he doesn't tell you what to think, doesn't treat his audience like children and tell them what to think, doesn't moral grandstand, yet at the same time when you follow him for long enough you start understanding where he's coming from and behind his charming way with words is someone that genuinely wants the world to be a better place and follows the Libertarian non aggression principles and is consistent in applying them.. he saw through the thinly veiled facade that Steve was putting up and him playing into the meme was the punchline itself, refuting it would ruin the joke. I could elaborate further but then you're going to explain that you're an outsider again (round and round we go!).. also, he'd NEVER do a vid like this on someone if he didn't know said person's endgame. When he's addressing someone whose less abrasive he'll title the video "nice but misinformed feminist is wrong on a few things" or something and dismantle it politely... as opposed to when he's talking about someone like Steve who dishonestly slandered him by calling him a rape apologist and openly talks on Skype about how he won't even piss on bearing if he's on fire. Take a look at the contrast between Steve and the guy who he's having a Skype conversation with and how bearing speaks about him.. Also, I have no clue why there's this uncharitable, undeserved and inaccurate stigma that people replace articles with Youtubers just because they watch Youtubers.. as if you can't watch videos AND read articles. Better still, watch Youtubers who post their sources in the description or address them directly by reading them while displaying it on the screen and giving their opinion. Watching videos and personalities is relaxing when I'm eating lunch. As for the "citation needed", he put a link to the original video in the description which should give you all the context you need so you don't have to be the guy looking in from the outside, it was an hour and a half stream, enjoy? I've been caught with my pants down way more often with professional writers than with Youtubers like Sargon who aren't beholden to a company.. in the Youtube communities they get corrected in their comment sections if they're being dishonest or wrong about something and people stop watching them if they turn the comments off... Sargon wouldn't be where he is now and such a big target for slander if he wasn't charitable enough to accurately and fairly represent the people who he's arguing against while making videos correcting himself when he's wrong. And this is something in general that I have a problem with; having a "bias" in itself is not a bad thing, but being complaining about "bias" in a highly biased rant? Another thing worth noting; this isn't a "fight" between left and right, it's a "fight" between center left and the snowball effect of a well organized authoritarian far left.. so goodluck middle manning and thinking that sitting on the fence makes you intellectually superior or something.. no matter how much ground they gain, there's never going to be a point in time where the far left activists are going to say "ok, it's enough.. the system is perfect now, we've achieved what we wanted and now we can disband" and you know it.

I want to be fair to RUSH here - I don't think he's trying to be the "middle man", he just genuinely came right into this all with almost no context. I didn't get the impression the he was trying to say we should just write off and ignore what Youtubers say just because they're Youtubers, rather that from the outside looking in, the side making the more logical points is doing itself a disservice by being so abrasive. Political commentary is only a slice of what Bearing does, it's mostly for the sake of comedy above all else, at least that's the impression he's always given me, but since RUSH isn't really familiar with these people, it's understandable that from just that one video, he got the impression that Bearing was just some random jerk who rants. tl;dr I think it was just a case of a lack of context making everything really unclear.

What you're saying makes perfect sense, DeathevokatioN. There are too many people who respond negatively to general statements. People can use strong language and can make general, and sometimes bigoted statements as a much more warm and friendly way of communicating. It's a tone that suggests, "hey you know I like you, and I think you're a smart enough guy to know what I mean when I say this."
Longsplaining everything you have to say is a much more cold and sterile way of talking. I think Doomworld has conditioned me to do this because the wars I've had to fight to stabilize a neutral statement are fucking exhausting. In fact, I've actually been longing for an atmosphere here where we argue and fight more often! But I don't really know that anyone here feels any long-lasting connection to this particular forum (at least not yet) and I don't want to do anything to drive anyone away who is already here. Maybe if we made a pact to stay cool with each other, even when shit gets rough and flame wars break out, this could be more fun. Just agree that it's not personal and it not meant with any sort of anger or resentment with each other. It's just a keyboard war!

I agree big time - Whenever I'm posting something, I hope everyone around here knows I'm not trying to sound super sterile, it's just hard to meet that right balance of good grammar and casual grammar that doesn't make the whole post seem so clinical, lol.. I just hope people get to know you over time and don't think too much of it. I just made some posts on Doomworld that were really long winded and they suffer from that exact "over sterilization" shit but it's seems so hard for anyone to take your point seriously unless your grammar is accurate. It's an annoyingly hard happy medium to strike
