I just bought the Medley of Pain bundle this morning with base game and all its DLC's and played a bit over an hour. www.gog.com/en/game/dead_cellsstore.steampowered.com/app/588650/Dead_Cells/It's on sale on Steam until March 13th, and I'm guessing the discount ends the same day on GOG. I bought the DRM-free version on GOG, but an old review from 2018 says only the Steam version has mods available through the steam workshop. Here's an old forum thread but it's from 2019: www.gog.com/forum/dead_cells/steam_vs_gogHere's what the GOG version is apparently missing: steamcommunity.com/app/588650/workshop/Anyway it's a great game I recommend. And once again Castlevania or Demon Castle Dracula returns for some action after so many years. Not fond of seeing the red star logo, but on the Motion Twin website it says they're a French Workers Co-op. I got no problem with that since they're actually producing great work and actually have culture, in contrast to the dysfunctional bums on welfare trying to destroy culture in this country. So Motion Twin has earned my hard-earned money. But man, how about some equality for those on GOG?

Awesome.
Hell Keep will freeze over before I give Steam one eurocent.
It's DRM-free GOG or nothing.

How Castlevania-esque is this? I've ignored Dead Cells since I generally hate rogue-lites, much preferring traditional roguelikes. I am a pretty big fan of old school Castlevania and action platformers or metroidvanias though so I am curious. I assume the map layout and power ups are randomized?

Well this is the first Roguelike or Roguelite with semi-permadeath I've ever played and I like it. Even when you go back to the beginning after death you do build on some progress and quickly regain weapons you've unlocked and totally retain your abilities to get in more areas.
I played a few more hours today and got well into the Castlevania Castle area. I really like this game. It's a very strong Metroidvania type game even without the Castlevania areas and weapons and items. Actually having them plus a load of great new CV soundtrack renditions while there makes it so much cooler. And then replaying through other areas, you can acquire the CV stuff you've previously found including higher level versions.
Besides SotN, Metroid, Super Metroid, the three GBA CV's, the three DS CV's, and Bloodstained, another Metroidvania I played through, and beat, and really liked is Vigil: the Longest Night, which is a dark medieval fantasy with a lot of Lovecraft-ish elements. I played a good ways into Metroid Fusion for GBA but couldn't figure out how to further progress. CV II: Simon's Quest for NES was the proto-Metroidvania and the first CV I ever had and beat. Also beat a good remake of it someone made for PC.
Some more seemingly good Metroidvanias I got but didn't start playing yet are Guacamelee, Salt and Sanctuary, and Blasphemous. And the Metroid II remake someone made for PC and got C&D'd by Cuntendo immediately on release. Hollow Knight and Ori the Wisp are supposed to be really good but I don't like their kiddy art styles. I got someone Hollow Knight as a gift though.

Umbra of Sorrow perhaps? Not big on the story of the Igarashi Casltevanias but I think it was planned to be about some demon castle war. The dev was also working on a smaller more retro Castlevania, seal of the eclipse. Both looked promising but haven't heard about any progress for a while.

Looks like these are more recently updated, linked from the description of that vid. castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php?topic=10015twitter.com/demoncastlewarAnother couple great Metroidvanias I played through and beat are Spider-man Web of Shadows and Spider-man Shattered Dimensions for Nintendo DS. They're totally different from the home console games of the same titles (which are still great). They also have a lot of fighting game type comboing in them. Speaking of culture. I underestimated. Check out this amazing track to the Fractured Shrines area: Made me extra glad I had my audio jacked into a decent sounding stereo while I was playing. Got a Legendary Achievement on GOG yesterday that not even 0.1% of players have yet on there. I finished off Death with Maria's Cat. Peeked at achievements beforehand and did it on purpose. I'm going to see if I can view the achievements on steam. EDIT: By the time I posted that today, that achievement was up to 0.1% on GOG and 0.2% on Steam.
