I love this game. It is completely insane, trippy, unpredictable, and downright bizarre. One of my all-time favorites, mainly because it's the perfect gaming experience to undertake before going to sleep. Or while intoxicated. Some of the craziest dreams I've ever had came following a session of LSD: Dream Emulator. This game was released in 1998 on the Playstation 1. It was exclusively sold in Japan, so global distribution quantity was low and limited. Physical versions of the game are extremely rare and difficult to find. However, you can download the game for free on the computer by following a few simple steps (more on that later). But first... the game!
The "gameplay" (sure, if you can call it that) is essentially walking around. That's it. From there, it's about what you find that becomes special (or not so special). The textures and encounters in each scene are usually quite random. Though there is an element of repetition as well. You will teleport to a different location after you run into something. Eventually, the dream will end (after a random amount of time), and you will be presented with a graph that displays the mood of the overall experience. If you commit suicide, the dream ends early and becomes a "downer" experience. Killing yourself by falling into pits will begin to produce nightmares. Dreams will slowly get darker, scarier, and more unstable and unpredictable.
The game runs on "days". You start at 1, and continue upward from there. The further along you go, the stranger stuff gets. Things start off basic, but quickly begin to unravel. Occasionally, you will have a vision. A short video clip will play.
Don't use the wiki, since there is no need for knowledge or strategy. The less you know, the better. You just walk about, bump into stuff, and adsorb the all-encompassing madness. It's great! You will see giant fish, lips, mushrooms, flickering water (don't play if you have epilepsy), decapitated hanging bodies, and a man in a grey trench coat. It is weird.
I'm going to keep a diary thread going, which I'll update every so often. Inspired by darknation and his Dwarf Fortress thread, which I thought was a really cool idea.
Hey, here's what I saw last night! Sumo wrestlers, battling in a giant cancerous prostate (you can see the opening of the inner body cavity urethra to the left). At least I thought it was a urethra, as any sane man would.
But as it turns out, I was wrong. You see, there are different tunnels that branch off in multiple directions as you continue down the warm, moist flesh tunnel. I encountered a giant baby though, so I imagine comparisons can be drawn between vaginal structures (womb, birth) in here. It's like the inner clockwork of an ant-hive flesh cavity. Peculiar stuff! Very peculiar.
I'll admit this one is a bit tricky to see. I was chasing something here, though I'm not quite sure what it is. Looks like a unicorn (which would make sense) but given the lack of close proximity, the end result ultimately remains an unknown variable:
Here's a peacock.
Ahh yes! This. Something I should have mentioned earlier. You can run into moving creatures, or sometimes they will attack and run into you. Either way, there are certain rare areas I've accessed that seem to be more frequently encountered this way. So, try to run into the monsters because it sometimes produces cool results. There's no way to lose in this game, so it's all good.
Also, The Sun God Ra: Helios, descendant of Anubis. You can enter his mouth:
Anyway, that was the end of Day 3 for me (I've restarted the journey). If you want to play the game for yourself, just follow this short video. You can download and extract the WinRAR package from the link provided in the video description (it contains everything you need):
Controls
Move: Arrows Keys
Run: Z
Look up: A
Look down: X
Pause: Enter
The emulator has a built-in screenshot option too. Press F12, and it saves your pictures into the "screenshot" folder. You can save your place in-game at any time, by accessing the menu in the top left corner. "Save" and "Load" options are in there.
More LSD adventures to come!
