Has there been any wad (or map) you seen or heard about that you expected to be ballbustingly hard but when you eventually played it it turned out to be easier than you expected?

Maybe Eternal Doom, which I don't think is as obtuse as it's reputed to be, but I can't really think of any other examples. I find that everything I play is either as hard as expected or harder.

Yeah, there's definitely some cryptic progression in some of those maps (MAP30 being the most egregious) but I think those are outliers and on the whole, the average Eternal Doom map isn't all that cryptic.
