Although the Gameboy Advance port isnt very good, portable doom was revolutionary for me at the time. Ive been curious about getting a retro handheld to play a PC Doom port on, since touch screen controls on a phone are pretty bad. it is possible to plug a controller into my phone though using a USB to USB-c adapter which is pretty cool but is a bit of a hassle to set up.
ive seen Doom running on an iPod nano but obviously it was really difficult to play, would not recommend.
i prefer playing doom with a controller, but i find the control schemes for most console ports for doom to be pretty lousy, with a lot of wasted buttons.
have you ever played doom on an unusual device that played oddly well?

My Nokia 9300i has a Doom source port available (called c2doom) and I tried it out a few years ago. Not a lot of fun, the phone is too weak to maintain a solid frame rate and the keyboard really isn't made for gaming. But it's quite the unusual device right?

Nintendo DS Lite with Acekard 2 flash card. The port is called DSDoom and it's basically a fork of PrBoom. Somehow it doesn't feel as nice to me as the Quake port, like turning is a bit slow. Otherwise it's ok. Oh I can't remember if it has music? But that's not really a big deal. Also the Quake port plays very nice and fluid, but the only problem here is the low resolution (256x192) makes the environment harder to make out compared to Doom, for whatever reason. It's good that I was already very familiar with the levels, or it might've been really difficult to play.

The computer I played it on at a computer fair I went to when it was first released.. played it on a gamepad of some kind, felt less impressive when I played it with a keyboard when I eventually got to play it again.

I used to have a model that was very similar to that Nokia. I remember that playing Wolf3D on it was too much due to the (lack of) controls, so I couldn't imagine DOOM being a satisfying experience. I did play Worms a lot on it, though. I had a Siemens phone around 2003 with a monochrome display that had a really poor Wolf clone bundled with it. You shot balloons instead of Nazis for some reason. i.pinimg.com/736x/6d/ea/9b/6dea9b92c6981d6c726f4d45779de6fe.jpgIt ran at 1fps and the screen had terrible ghosting.

> DSi XL From what I remember, the DSi is just an expanded DS with more memory. So it might get better framerate on bigger maps. The DS Lite only has 4 MB RAM, and that's really pushing it, especially for Quake. Actually I didn't play beyond the shareware episode of Quake, not sure if the whole game would even fit. For sure the expansion packs wouldn't, and probably not even loading custom maps. But it's been over 10 years since I played those ports, and I scrounged the microSD to use in other projects.
