I introduced Doom to my girlfriends 10 year old daughter and she likes it!
We played splitscreen coop together for her first time ever on Sunday on the Unity port on playstation 4. We started from E1M1 on Im too young to die and played all the way up to E4M6 in about 3 hours.
She kicked ass at it! With no prior experience, she had excellent aim and terrific navigational skills, and was very kind at rationing out health items. Shes a natural! I let her lead the way and provided cover fire from behind. Her favorite weapon is the rocket launcher.
She was hesitant to play at first. I wasnt sure how she would like it. Shes a minecraft player but mostly plays in creative mode. she likes building stuff and creating mini-scenarios. Shes been recently opening up to playing on survival mode but she scares easily and is devastated by dying, which also held true in Doom.
The monsters didnt scare her much. She was cautious at first, especialy in the dark areas, like the E1M2 maze, but shes a great shot and took the monsters out really quick. By the time we got to E1M5 she was pretty brave and leading the way most of the time. I gave her a couple hints to solve some of the mazes and puzzles but she solved a lot of it pretty intuitively. I was really impressed.
She can get pretty competitive which is hilarious to watch when shes winning, but a pretty sore loser when she dies. She really hated John Romero for E4M2, and she took a lot of consoling to keep her from quitting. Vanilla coop has no way of turn off fiendly fire, or respawning items, or keeping your guns after you die, so she was really butthurt from losing her goood weapons and having to make dangerous jumps to get plasma and rockets again.
I gotta say, episode 4 and the later half of episode 3 is really ridiculous with damage sectors and teleports. She was definitely taking on a lot more damage from the environmental hazards, (including occasional telefrags) than any of the monsters and that was really frustrating for her.
Her mom told her that i design levels for the game and she was excited to try mapping, since she likes building in minecraft so much. but of course theres no such thing for the playstation so i couldnt show her how it works. She already had ideas and intuitively said she wanted to make something that starts off easy and when you get the big guns, it gets harder and harder.
I think next weekend ill introduce her to Doom 2, and how to navigate using the automap. and in the following week we can sit down and draw some map layouts on paper.
She will be visiting at my house for the first time for the christmas holiday so i can show her how to transpose the drawn layouts on doombuilder on my PC.
im really excited to see what she makes!
