They will always need money. Making boomer shooters is their income now. They're paying their bills and taxes and necessities of life with it, and they're always going to need more. that's why, i guess, i got full Hedon:Bloodrite (second instalment in Hedon series, bigger and better than the first one) as a free update on GOG. i mean, free as a free beer, i only had the first part. i guess that was some elaborate plan to… ahem… make me NOT spend any money on the second part?

My opinions are generally the same for the modern "retro" gaming market as a whole. The bulk of what people are making is mostly low to average quality compared to free community content as a whole. This ranges from simply being the work of naive amateurs to being lazy cash grabs. On the other end there are some that are making genuine quality content and should be able to profit off their work. With GZDoom specifically it's so easy for a novice to slap together some stuff and feel like they have a completed "product" that I expect we'll be seeing it used more often over time. It would be naive to say that there won't be people driven solely by self interest that can be damaging to a "community" but I think it is equally naive to think classic Doom is anything more than a sizable niche that would really be hurt by people playing other games. Just some cursory thoughts.

40oz that's one of the craziest and stupidest theories I've heard all day. Does Ion Fury make people stop playing Blood/Duke Nukem, for example? Nope. Then why the fuck GZDoom games should make people stop playing classic Doom? Like someone will play Hedon or Selaco and will say 'damb, these GZDoom games fucking rule! So much better than that classic Doom crap... Hell, I can't even play PWADs anymore because classic Doom gameplay is fucking trash compared to those super sexy GZDoom gaemz! Yeah, fuck Doom for all eternity!11!! Selaco and Hedon 4evah'... That's a bit of a stretch, you know?

40oz Bah, my previous comment seems a little bit too hostile and douchey. What I'm trying to say is that your concern about people stop caring about classic Doom after checking out GZDoom games is based on nothing but misconceptions you made up in your mind. Prove me wrong if you can, but I'm sure there's no proof that this supposed 'overthrowing' of classic Doom is about to take place. And if there are people who stopped playing Doom after playing GZDoom games or mods then that just means they never really were that interested in classic Doom anyway. Just my two cents... :/

Thoughts on GZDoom Games? That renderer isn't DooM, to me. It's something else. As for the new games themselves I wouldn't pay for a wad (again, as I bought Sigil). They won't beat the original anyway.

^I wouldn't buy any game lol, better'd bought food and recently games cost like 2 or 3 go-times to buy food for a family of 5 people.
If I could, I'd sell games to those who live in a country with healthy consuming so I can assume they can afford it and it's like to buy a stick of gum for them

hm. i think i got where 40oz comes from. he is talking only about shitty low-effort "retro shooters", made to quickly grab some cash. they are easy to develop, usually have "my-first-map-quality" content, and totally forgetable. the only thing they have to attract people is release date. ;-)
but tbh, i don't think that people will choose idTech1 for such games, they will prolly go with Unity and some premade assets/code. learning how to create something in idTech1 requires way more efforts than those people are ready to invest.
on the other side of the spectrum we have Hedon, REKKR, even Vomitorium (yet more in the form of it's predecessor Shrine) are the works of passion. and i'm almost sure that people playing those games will sooner or later try Doom itself, because they will be interested what's there in that Doom game that authors choose it as the base for their creations. and i bet that some such people will become Doom mappers themselves. ;-)

Unity is a huge blob of unused .dlls to me. A retro fps weighing 200 MBs is a no go

Not a worthwhile bump, but thought it was interesting enough to say the least because I used this game as one of examples of being behind a paywall. Still not worth my money because if I wanted to play this game, I would download it for free and not bother paying $10.

Thought I would bump up my own thread where one of the examples I've talked about was in early access yesterday for $14.99 but is on sale for $12.74. So far, it's five levels for that price, with a sixth of the game complete. store.steampowered.com/app/1693280/Supplice/
