My patience for finishing a full megawad is long gone. Unless I'm playing something of exceptional quality or composed of short levels, I usually get bored after 7-12 maps

Nibba ain't nobody playin dat shiet fr fr, on my momma. The last megawad I played most of was Echelon, and that one's, well, you know.
I never had the patience. 32 levels is a full fucking game. 10 levels max and I'm out, unless it's either really good or at least really hyped up. 99% of Doom mappers aren't nearly skilful enough to make something that can hold one's attention for 32 levels, while using the same old shitty Doom engine, mechanics, weapons and monsters. That's not a dig at all the mappers but just a fact. Not even I am that talented and especially not the people that make AI-generated-looking shit like waifufortium and skillsoy. It's not 1998 anymore, people have made almost everything that there is to make.
Also taking into account the volume at which content comes out, and the fact that it's all free, holding attention is an almost impossible mission. If I paid even $5 for a megawad, you bet I'd play it through, or at least try to. However I did not. And if it's the third megawad to come out this month, who tf is gonna bother?

In like 2019 I remember abandoning TNTR on map21 just because that map felt boring after the masterpieces behind.
I generally quit megawads after map20

Yeah, I do but I have to take breaks even if I'm playing with saves.

yes, but not in a one seat. it usually spans a two or three days, interspersed with other equally important things to do.

I never had the patience to finish a megawad in one sitting. It took me 13 years to finish The Plutonia Experiment. In like 2019 I remember abandoning TNTR on map21 just because that map felt boring after the masterpieces behind. I remember very little of most of the maps, but TNT MAP20 is truly an epic masterpiece.

While I prefer smaller wads, I almost always do finish big megawads. I'll just save and continue it the next days. But sometimes I have saves about megawads I started playing and then forgot about.

Nowadays I don't even complete it. Usually I play with a dehacked/modification that reduces the monster's hp or just play in ez modo so I can get over with it. I gotta take it easy.

Do I have the patience? Sure. But quality beats quantity every time. I'd rather play a short well made WAD than a long one with filler maps just because it has to be 32. A good WAD should leave you wanting more upon finishing it.

ive been wondering if there will ever be a dbp that reaches 30 levels or more, but more importantly, if anyone would really want that.
around 2018 i was catching up on mid 2010's community projects i missed and a lot of the maps were 30 minutes or more to beat. The maps were fine, too, but I was starting to get really sick of playing Doom by that point because mappers were simply not valuing my time. I could barely put up with playing one map per sitting. Playing megawads can be an obnoxious commitment for a busy adult.
At some point there will be a dbp thats only like 2 or 3 maps and that would be fine by me.

One way to make it a full 30-map megawad and keep it fresh is to make the maps relatively short. This might be harder on the mappers, though, I'm not certain. To those among you that make maps - what do you think is harder? To make one big map that stays balanced and fun beginning to end, or to make several small maps that feel original and fresh? Of course, no one is forced to play a megawad in one sitting. It is possible to use the natural intermission screens between 11 and 12, 20 and 21 to sort of divide it into 3 sections of roughly equal size.

dr_st making big maps that are fun to play all the way through is really hard and time consuming (at least for me anyway). And making small maps is usually a lot easier because you don't have to keep in mind a shitload of things in mind when adding/removing monsters and areas.

I've got a lot of mixed feelings about DBP lengths but generally think it's good to fluctuate between smaller and bigger projects. If we're regularly making 32+ map megawads every month then this community has clearly outgrown the DBP format, at least as it exists today. At the same time, if nobody wants to contribute and a project ends up with 2 maps, maybe its time to call it quits. I think the former is more likely than the latter. I did the math before (iirc, around the time of DBP38) and the average DBP length was about 10-11 maps, which is probably an ideal length - not long enough to be slog and not short enough to feel inconsequential. The shortest DBP is 5-maps long, which I think is fine. 3-4 is fine too but I think if only two people are willing to participate in a community project then something's gone horribly wrong. I think a full 32-map DBP might be nice as a sort of milestone achievement but I wouldn't want every one to be that long. I'm conflicted though as I feel our longer projects (37, 47, 50) tend to be much more well-received and I think part of the reason they are big in the first place is because either a lot of members want to participate or because the mappers are really inspired, both of which are good things, I think. I mean, if everyone was limited to submitting one map, AUGER;ZENITH would only be 12 maps long. I don't think we'll have to worry about any of these issues any time soon though.

Arguably, you need less ideas but I think it's harder to keep those same ideas fresh the longer the map goes on. I think any map that takes 30+ minutes to beat is going to have a hard time keeping the player's interest.

I've never had the patience to play a full megawad even going back to the iwads. Once I learned idclev I just skipped around. I'll play a few levels here or there, jump to something else, maybe jump back. A big appeal of Doom to me is that maps are generally made to be self contained so consecutive play isn't required.

I've got less time lately, so better stick with episodes. I played through The Darkening II earlier this year and that was loads of fun! I was actually going to start out with the first one, but it was too dark for my monitor. So I'll try again when I swap to another screen. Also I played through like 2/3 of Memento Mori last winter, but it started getting too rough for me towards the end, so I had to quit that megawad. I still got a lot to do before this winter, so I'm not gonna try anything more than single maps anytime soon.
